Jerry Reynolds on the Rise Guys:

Can someone give a brief text summary? I'd really appreciate it.

I'll give it a go.

All amidst the classic Jerry humor of self depracation and backhanded compliments galore.

Talked about the need, on a team in a position such as ours, where we have no long term core of established stars for players like Thompson and Garcia to continue to improve, step up and take their game to the next level. Thompson in particular. Jerry says big year for him. Must finally show what he can do. Looked great in practice the other day. Jerry: "Clearly the best player on the floor".

Talked about Cousins amazing hands. Announcers began to compare to Webber's hands (or at least report that Petrie did on media day), but Jerry provided a bit of perspective saying Webber had some of the best hands ever. Said his passing ability was something they didn't expect. And that he is such a willing passer. Great feel for the game. Announcers declared a moratorium on comparing any player to Webber. Jerry objects, saying if you can compare Darko Milicic to Webber... well then you can compare others.

A Prospectus book say 43 wins for the Kings. Reynolds says we are still unbeaten after one full day of practice. Perhaps that's a bit low.

Talked about the vast difference in the power positions from this point last year and now. Big year for JT to prove himself.

Rule change on techs to lessen complaining. Says this is good for the league. JT and will need to adjust. But this will be good for him. Never was like this (so much complaining) in the past (except for Rick Barry).

Beno ceiling: can get a little better, but getting close to it. Can make plays, make shots, good starting or off bench, etc. Was helped tremendously by a great relationship with PW, who was providing real direction that a player like Beno needs. (of course). Beno is very intelligent, and is a very intelligent player. Part of the solution, not part of the problem.

About the Heat. Jerry's never seen anything like this kind of anticipation. Will attract new fans, but he's old school so he's not a fan of player's demading to go certain places. (Ok Jerry, your entitled to your opinion.)

That's pretty much it. Good natured interview. The normal Jerry stuff. Also, he wants nickname suggestions. For all players.

One minor correction. Jerry wasn't exactly critical of a player wanting to go somewhere else. He was critical of a player going somewhere else because he thinks he can win a championship. He pointed out that Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan etc. always thought that they could win where ever they were.

Much obliged, Hammer.

Beno has hit his ceiling, imo. And you can't really ask for more from an average athlete pg who was once waived. 13 pts, 5 ast on 50% shooting as a combo guard next to the apparent star is damn good, and just about EXACTLY what you want from that type of role player. His turnover/ast ratio was also good last year. All you can ask for is more defense, but that can be said of anyone.

A PG/role playing guard off bench(ideally) in the mold of Ron Harper/DFish is exactly what you want next to your star. Dont shine as bright, but plug the holes.

Well he was never waived, but he was certainy third string and second string for several years, and he is not very "athletic", but Steve Nash comes to mind. Beno is no Nash, but he provided the example that players in that mold can continue to get better. Sometimes it's not all about athleticism.

Beno could be near his ceiling, but then again, he's been stuck on the end of a bench of established players, or had terrible coaches until last year. I would not be surprised at all if Beno turns out to be the kind of super solid, smart, top shooting, reliable, versatile player that sticks around an organization (ours) for years. Mostly he's just a very smart, mature player. I think he will get a little better, but mostly through just the decision making, knowing the system, leadership, efficiency, kind of ways, with insane breakout games every once in a while. Remember he did have some seriously game changing, taking over the game kind of moments last year. He was insane at times.

As previously stated, he was traded to the Twolves for a second, then waived. I only threw that in originally for perspective.

Hopefully he'll be able to pick his spots better and learn how to improve others around him even more. Serviceable on ball, good off ball, versatile "off" guard to our star. While Nash isn't vertically quick, he is quite quick in terms of change of pace. Beno is bigger, wider, so it's not terribly fair to compare. Then again, Nash is a HOF pg, and one of the best, and most underrated to play the position. Nash is his own prototype. The quickness that Nash has is not moving faster than his opponent, but before his opponent knows what is going on.
