Jazz/Thunder trade and how it affects the Kings

well for those of you who've noticed its been a busy day for me on here... I've been crazy sick for 3 days, watched Gavin's Tyreke Evans speech over 30 times (just today) and kinda lost my mind and blacked out like Gavin did but over disliking Noah earlier today...

anyway John Hollinger made a big point in his Jazz/Thunder trade article... and one that i think affects us big time....

For other teams looking to dump salary, however, this deal is terrible news. Only a few doors remain open for dumping salary, and one of them just slammed shut. While opportunities remain available -- witness my Boozer example above -- the likes of Washington and New Orleans have to be disappointed that the Oklahoma City option is off the table.-Hollinger

I'll leave it up to you guys to figure out what direction to take this thread... what players, teams, etc... but as far as the trade market its looking better for the Kings. Okafor!!!! lol! oops

That's a solid point/interpretation, although up until this point I had not really ocnsidered OKC as a competitor in that respect.

I think the interesting question is jsut whetehr the Maloofs, withe htier money issues, are really prepared to put themselves out there to help financially stressed teams, even if it is a win for us on the court.

you know... that was the first quesion i asked myself too...

I think that the stars have aligned just right, at the right time...to get the Maloofs to bite on a big contract if it means improving what we got right now... I think the Maloofs do it because.... if the kings recent wins have put Gavin anywhere near the level of excitement he was during in the Tyreke Evans speech then he will sign off on anything and everything.... j/k... for real tho i think they do it because........

1. lets face it, obviously the Maloofs like the rest of the world know we need help on the front line and if we had a stronger front line... someone to help JT out...a starting Center, maybe backup PF, you know... the basics (lol!) it could seriously make us a whole lot better. we all know this.

2. with the excitement coming back to Arco thanks to Evans explosion on the scene (basically the best in the draft...so far). The steady growth and unexpected contributions from so many. Our team is without a doubt on a serious rise. We are the 9th seed right now... without K-Mart!, a starting Center and arguably a back up PF too)

3. Also the recession seems to have ended, or at least the worst of it. (although Sac was hit really hard by it)... meaning people can relax if they still have some money... sorta... /=

4. the Maloofs are gamblers and i think they have to be considering "if it makes us better" it might make them more money? i mean its not rocket science... the maloofs have to be thinking at this point losing certainly isn't the answer, and if this team JUST made the playoffs it would be like winning the super bowl in this town.

5. this i think is obvious too... we totally screwed ourselves with the 2010 FA thing... having Brad Miller would have actually been good if we planned on landing a big time FA... but again.. its gonna be really really hard for us to sign anyone the next couple years, even if we had the huge cap space. we need to prove to the stars that by coming here we will be playoff bound/contenders, otherwise we're gonna have to WAY overpay... we're pretty much trade only for anything near or around star quality. and again Geoff and the Maloofs know this too...

so because of all these reasons i think we strike while the irons hot and make a bold move toward become completely relevant again! ROLL THE DICE MALOOFS!!! (cough,Okafor,cough,) Lets take advantage of those weaker than us and rob them with cap space in return!

I think they would with certain trades in mind. Infact they already have.. The rumored K9 for okafor trade would have created a $2.5m Trade Exception/cap relief for NO. There are other fake/rumor trades running around I'm sure you've read in which we actually use our cap space to absorb salary. I think the Maloofs would do it if we are bringing in something to be excited about (legitimate players, big interior defenders especially or even top 5 lottery bound draft picks).

I think it's a good business move to take advantage of others misfortune as bad as it sounds. If they think they can steal a player right now by offering what they had already accounted for last season and help us take those next steps towards playoffs and championship runs (which equal big $$$) then I think it would be a no brainer on their part.

Addition/edit: Looking at Hoopshype team salaries and potential teams I think we should pick on for players.. 3 stand out to me in Jazz (still), Wizards, and Hornets. All under-achieving luxury tax teams with Big's on them I want my hands on... (Haywood, McGee, Okafor)

I wonder what this means with respect to the NYK pick. Trading away their Rookie for peanuts tells me that they might not see it as being that valuable to them, and since they're trying to cut salary, we might have just what they're looking for. IF the pick looks like it's going to be mid-lottery, could we get away with building a deal around KT for the NY first and a bad contract? Normally, I don't think that's enough value, but they seem cost conscious at the moment.

In a draft with several talented big men, I'd like to see us take two of them with the hope that one will be pretty good.
