To me Domas for RJB and Poeltl is worth this year's pick and a prospect. Toronto is done with both of those players and get a useful addition in Domas. If they make the playoffs (currently fourth in the East) that pick is not remotely as valuable even this year as a potential lottery pick. Poeltl is still an albatross and Barrett is making 30m next season to put up numbers that are frankly disappointing for that salary level.

I will admit, while this isn't at all rebuilding the thought of Barrett, Hunter, and Keegan is intriguing. Probably a day late and a dollar short but the Kings would finally have that big team they've been avoiding forever. Cardwell and maybe some other shotblocking at C and a 3 and D PG and that's a team that makes sense for once.

You take those guys, you get a 20 something pick this year, a top 6 pick hopefully better this year, we have 2030 Minny coming our way down the road, there's an off chance if something awful goes down in spurs town we get their lottery pick next year, we will hopefully get something of value for DeMar and Monk but at this point I'm resigned to being totally hosed by Zach.

It's not great but Barrett and Hunter would be easier to convert into picks next season when they are expiring middle class contracts than finding a team that can swallow Zach and not give us another nightmare contract in return.

You're still betting on hitting the lotto this year for it to work (and if it doesn't we're going to be horrible again no matter what next year).
 
Just curious here as I’m generally familiar with Barretts game. Solid stats, always seemed like a competent defender. Doesn’t do anything great but a well rounded game. Given the Raptors are having a good year, PLUS RJ is a Canadian….why are they looking to move him? In a pretty open eastern conference, seems pretty likely the team stalls out trying to integrate Domas mid-season. I just don’t really get this for Toronto.

Come on. Desmond Bane spent the prior four years to being traded as a 5.7 WS/yr, 2.5 VORP/yr player, was on a contract almost as big as Domas', and netted three unprotected picks. Domas over the past four years has been a 10.6 WS/yr, 4.8 VORP/yr player, so basically twice as impactful...and people think we can't get ONE pick for him? Domas' value is EASILY three picks, and if we don't see an offer like that, we shouldn't consider trading him.

They know he's a fairly inefficient, high usage, empty statter. His production just isn't worth his contract. He's essentially just a younger version of Lavine/DDR etc. Guys that put up counting stats as top scoring options but don't lead their teams to victories. It would be a shame if our franchise bit on yet another one of these types.

I agree that this whole thing doesn't make a ton of sense for Toronto right now. You'd think they'd want to ride out their new found success and see what happens this year before pulling the trigger on a big trade.

Thankfully, he's been better the last few years. Not a star by any means, but he's taken the Andrew Wiggins route of being an incredibly inefficient chucker to being a good starting caliber wing.

We better be getting 2 picks at bare minimum. RJ+Ochai+1 FRP is a complete disaster

You are correct. However, teams have wised up to the new CBA since then and they know the value of young players. I’m all for getting picks, I’m just not expecting to.
 
what would be the point of dragging it into the offseason? Poeltl has a reasonable salary for next year (19 mil) it’s the remaining 3 that are the problem. Nothing changes in the offseason. Raptors would be best served keeping him through next season and try to rebuild some of his value. Sabonis will likely get an extension in the upper 20s instead of 40s given his age in a couple years so maybe they will have more wiggle room with the aprons. If they keep Poeltl as a back up to Sabonis he is unlikely to reach the minutes incentive so that 27 mil in the last year of the deal will be considerably less. (As low as 5 mil)

See, this is disconcerting to me. I want no part of Poeltl's contract, either, but the Kings should be using it to leverage further draft compensation out of TOR. A flat no doesn't help their bargaining position. If TOR is so insistent on getting out from under that hideous contract, make them bleed. Take however many future first rounders you can get them to part with in order to undo their mistake. Other rebuilding teams intuitively understand how to be a landing spot for undesirable contracts; I don't know why the Kings make it so hard.

Hard to rope in a third team, because nobody wants Poeltl's injured back and contract. And that's the point; if the Kings are the only landing spot for Poeltl and TOR is desperate enough to dump him, then you can extract first round value from the transaction. But saying that they won't take on Poeltl under any circumstances shuts down the conversation and forces TOR to hunt for a third team. I don't expect they'll find one.
