Iverson trade to Detroit

Wow. I don't really understand why the Pistons would do this unless they are trying to rebuild and this somehow gives them more flexibility.

That's exactly what is happening. Dumars has been very saavy here -- he has (correctly) tagged Sheed and Billups as the turn it on when they feel like it core of the Pistons peculiar attitude, and he has furthermore tagged (maybe correctly, maybe not) Rodney Stuckey as the future of the franchise at PG. So he swaps Billups (3 yrs remaining) and McDyess (2 yrs remaining, and in the way of Maxiel and Johnson) for Iverson (ender). then at the end of the year he gets both Iverson and Sheed off the books and frees up $33 million dollar in cap room ($35 million with Walter Hermann). Insto-rebuild. Clear all the old guys/contracts out of the way, keep Rip and Tayshaun (probably) as holdover vets, get all your kids into the rotation next year, and have big money to spend over the summer on a free agent or free agents of your choice.

Its the end of the Pistons as we know them, but they are racing right through the rebuild in record time.

Sources: Nuggets, Pistons working to finalize Iverson trade

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3679931

The Denver Nuggets are expected to trade Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess, Pistons team sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.
The deal has not been finalized.
This would be the second time Iverson has been traded in two years. He was dealt by Philadelphia to Denver in December 2006, kicked out of Philly over irreconcilable differences as part of a package that brought Andre Miller to the 76ers.

If that's the plan and if that's how it ends up, Dummars is a genius.

Best part is, he gets to send out a revamped Pistons roster this season that, fueled by a hungry Iverson with maybe his last shot at a title, might even be able to take one last hurrah run at it and throw a different challenge at the Celtics. Then at the end of the year all your remaining old guys come off the books, you ignore them as free agents, and you go into next year with a vastly younger starting lineup of Stuckey, Rip, Prince, maybe Maxiel, maybe Johnson, but with one of those frontcourt spots likely filled by a big young FA. Boozer?

And makes sense for the Nuggets too -- Chauncey is horribly overrated, but he is a PG, so it gets Anthony Carter back to the bench and balances their lineup -- finally they can start JR Smith next to a real PG, go Billups/Smith/Melo/Martin/Nene with Kleiza and McDyess off the bench, and get some shortterm big man depth to help make up for all those guys they sold off this summer. McDyess is a former Nugget too. Good place for him to retire.

Sheed then drifts off to beomce a late career Horry -- signing with a contender as an x-factor 6th man big off the bench every year.

Only Iverson's future is cloudy. Who signs him, and in what role? Maybe he does the old superstar willing to sign for the MLE with a contender to get a ring thing.

Wow, stunning trade, but I like it for both sides. It's not often you see a team make a move that simultaneously results in a one-last-hurrah season followed by an instant rebuild. Very interesting for the Pistons.

It's riskier for the Nuggets because of Billups' age and contract, but as long as Martin and Nene are on the books they weren't getting cap space anyway. They get more of a true PG and defense.

I think the best part of this trade is there is now one-less guards "locked" on the All Star team in the West opening up a slot that Kevin Martin could potentially fill...

Billups and Iverson seem a wash in guard "locked" for the allstar game.

I did not see this coming, wow.

It certainly does raise a lot of questions:

How will this affect Denver's offense? Is JR Smith going to step up, as many so-called experts say he will?

Will Iverson's ball-hogging capabilities kill Detroit's offense? Without McDyess, can Amir Johnson truly step it up?

My opinions are: I think this makes Denver stronger right now, but not strong enough. I think this makes Detroit signficantly weaker, especially in the front, but possibly stronger long-term. Geoff Petrie wasn't able to do the quick rebuild (see summer, 2005), so maybe Dumars can work it out.

I think Dumars is foregoing this yr's shot at the title for the next however many. Celts won't have any problem zoning the paint and making Iverson shoot pressured jumpers otherwise.

Iverson is a lock, but Billups may not be a fan vote lock starter, thus, the coaches will have to select him, so he will have to play pretty well to get on the team.

Don't worry bout Kevin Martin making the All-Star team until he and his team can figure out how to deal with the new defensive strategy of every team that will play The kings; contain Martin.

i remember people were calling Denver a championship team when they got him...not so much. lol

Kevin is not making the All Star team on a team as bad as we are. Let alone while averaging 17pts on 38% shooting.

On paper, they were. But like the Sixers in the past, Iverson completely destroyed any chemistry they had/have (even if they did make it to the finals, the east was weak)

PS. Great move by Dumars to shed $35 million in one season.....WOW

these are the kind of moves that make me so upset with petrie.... this team could easily be seriously under the cap this offseason and really trying to rebuild. i dont like the idea of having marbury, iverson, marion or odom but would love to have one of their contracts coming off the books this summer....

But then again, those are basically the "big name" free agents this summer. Most all of the interesting names signed extensions already.

They were never a championship contender w/ that lack of D and AI/Melo as leaders. They're both overrated.

Memories!

Denver got a lot better with Chauncey because he's the perfect PG for them. Great defender, good 3 point shooter, good passer, he's the perfect fit for Carmelo. Iverson was a terrible fit for them and didn't make them any better.

AI probably makes the Pistons better. They needed a guy who can take over and draw a bunch of fouls. He's a better fit.

Good trade for both teams IMO.

Still aiming for '10 I believe.

Not that Bosh, 'Bron, or Wade is going to want to play in Sac.

The rebuild is coming along, it would have happened quicker if we didnt waste 2 seasons chasing the elusive 8th seed.

Joe Dumars is and has been a completely different type of animal from Geoff Petrie, ever since he joined the front office. He's a "go with the gut feeling" type of guy who speaks his mind and is obviously willing to face the music, should he be wrong at the end of the day. And he also has been the sole decider on personnel/coaching decisions, apparently.

Petrie has not been the sole decider (not excusing him, just pointing it out), and he's not the type of guy to express his feelings or share his opinion, either. He's extremely guarded, perhaps a bit too guarded at times, and he's even more calculating. I said this two years ago, and he still reminds me of Bill Stoneman, former GM of the Angels, when it comes to making moves. (As soon as Stoneman stepped down, Tony Reagins comes in and makes a huge free agent splash by signing Torii Hunter from Minnesota, then makes an even bigger deadline trade for the most coveted player available by giving away a younger player, something Stoneman has been hesitant to do. Petrie has a lot more Bill Stoneman than Tony Reagins in him.)

It also helps Dumars cause that he didn't have a guy like Chris Webber on the team. The Webber situation really complicated things for the Kings, and the after effects of that situation (Kenny Thomas) are still playing a role on the team.

Now, Dumars > Petrie, clearly, but you're comparing two completely different types of managers with different protocols.
