It's Oscar night

6th

Homer Fan Since 1985
Will you be watching? Are you already watching all the red carpet arrivals? Do you have a favorite movie, actor, actress?

This is the place to discuss the Oscars with your KF.com friends.

Other than Heath Ledger, I haven't seen any of the nominated performances. I think, based on what I've seen reported, that Slumdog Millionaire will probably win...

I just don't get as excited about the awards as I once did, although I will watch nonetheless. I just honestly don't think the caliber of actor/actress today is up to the standards in general of those of years past...

...which is why I won't be watching.

Ben Stiller's impersonation of Joaquin Phoenix while he was presenting the Best Cinematography award with Natalie Portman has to be one of the funniest bits I think I've ever seen. Just a little disconcerting, however, if you're one of the cinematographers up for the award because he totally stole their moment...

The first thing I was thinking about that bit was if Joaquin Phoenix was at the Oscar ceremony!

But it's an industry in-joke, and the Oscars show is usually filled with those. Years from now, it will be forgotten. Maybe that's why the annual Oscar shows are never officially released on DVD.

Once upon a time it might have been forgotten, but I'm willing to bet it's already up and garnering many, many view on YouTube.

:)

As far as it being an industry in-joke, it quit being that when Phoenix was on David Letterman. If, as is being rumored, it's all a big joke while Corey Affleck films it as a pseudo-documentary, then Phoenix has taken a huge chance with what was a pretty good career. I hope for his sake he can, in fact, be like his namesake and rise from the ashes of his career.

And I think Hugh Jackman is doing a tremendous job. Of course, having Beyonce on his arm didn't hurting him any...

And the legacy is ensured...Heath Ledger wins for Best Supporting Actor. I hope people can watch the film and just focus on his performance. It is truly among the most riveting ever to be captured on film. Mr. Ledger will be missed, but luckily his work will live on.

Slumdog Millionaire is winning a lot of supporting awards like Musical score, film editing, etc.

Now we have gotten to the really biggie awards.

Best Actress......Kate Winslet in The Reader

And, the final award of the night, as usual, goes to the best picture.

Best Picture........Slumdog Millionaire

I wanted Rourke for Best Actor...
That was the only award I cared about, so color me disappointed.

Personally, while I was thrilled that Rourke was nominated, I think it was too early to hand him the Oscar. I've heard (since I haven't seen all the movies) that while he gave an excellent performance, he would not beat Sean Penn or Brad Pitt. So, no surprise there.

I was surprised, but thrilled, for Kate Winslett considering the powerhouses that made up the Best Actress list.

The last scene in The Wrestler will change your mind.

...oh yeah, and Brad Pitt is easily one of my favorite actors around, but I'm definitely considering Frank Langella over him this year for his role as Nixon.

Out of all those movies, I only saw a few: Gran torino, Doubt, Benjamin Button, Rachel Getting Married, and Milk.

I liked Milk and Gran Torino. Doubt and Rachel...they were ok as was Bejamin Button which I think was over-rated.

None of the others mentioned, aside from The Reader, do I have much interest in seeing.

Iron Man is actually a deceptively good film, due in most part to the tremendous job Robert Downey Jr. does in the lead role. I am so glad to see Downey back on top of his game. He has always been one of my favorite actors; his portrayal of Chaplin was almost beyond belief...

I'm really looking forward to his next film, The Soloist, with Jamie Foxx, which was originally set for release in November, 2008, but was delayed until April, 2009 - I suspect to get a better shot from the Oscar crowd.

I'm with you VF on the Soloist, Jamie Foxx and RDJ are a perfect match

Agreed. I love Chaplin. And Downey is one of my favorite actors of all time too.

I just can't get into the movies anymore - for what it costs to see 4 films, I can indulge myself in a new pair of shoes. :p
You can rent top rated movies & new releases from those ''RED BOXES'' in selected grocery stores...only a buck! That might get you out to see some of the great movies this year.

SlumDog was awesome....& to have heard it was moments a way to going DVD...before it's release. Fate?

I'm waiting for that one, too. Not only to see Heath Ledger's last performance on film - even if they had to rewrite parts of it after his death - but because his co-stars have signed over all their earnings from the film to his daughter Mathilda. I may actually fork over the bucks to see it in the theater...not something I do very often because of the long distance involved just to see a film on the big screen.

Wow. I had no idea they were doing that, thats amazing.

Little Matilda Ledger's bank account just got a boost thanks to three generous actors.

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, the actors who played variations of Heath Ledger's character Tony in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," have donated their pay from the film to the late star's 2-year-old daughter.

The actors made the donation out of concern for Matilda's financial future, as her father did not update his will to include the toddler after her birth...
