Is the 2015 offseason our time?

Now that the Kings are finally starting to click, it's time for us to go all in and make a push to legitimacy. Considering this team has a very respectable record through the toughest part of their schedule, I'm going to assume they will finish high enough to lose their first round pick in 2015. Once that happens, it unlocks the ability to trade their future pick.

This trade would have to be made after their 2015 1st round pick has been forfeited.

ATL Gets:
2016 1st round pick
Nik Stauskas
Jason Thompson
Ramon Sessions

ATL Gives:
Al Horford

Why for ATL?
The Hawks are not in a very good position to compete for a championship or even an eastern conference title. Their core of Horford, Millsap, & Teague is not good enough to get the job done. They can continue with this team and fall into mediocrity or they can blow it up and begin to rebuild towards a better/more competitive team. With only 1 year left on Horford's contract, they should look to move him for young potential and flexible pieces. Otherwise, they can run the risk of him simply walking due to the lack of success he has experienced with the Hawks. In this trade, they get a young SG who has the potential to be a good player in this league along with a 1st round draft pick. Not to mention they get Thompson and Sessions as stop gap pieces who expire the same time Horford would (if they waive Thompson during his last year).

SAC Gets:
Al Horford

SAC Gives:
2016 1st round pick
Nik Stauskas
Jason Thompson
Ramon Sessions

Why for Sac?
The Kings give up some of their young potential and role players in order to acquire a big man that would pair very nicely with Cousins and the rest of the team. Horford can guard both PFs and Cs thus limiting Cousins exposure to fouls. He's also a good help defender and rim protector. On offense, he can score on the block (punishing teams that put the stronger defender on Cousins), but he also has great range on his jumper (which he has extended to the 3pt line). He's also a good passer and smart player who will bring a steady, veteran presence to this team.

With our 3 main guys all being able to score on the block (Cousins, Horford, and Gay) as well as our backup big (Landry), we'll dominate the paint every game. Jump shooting comes and goes, but having a relentless paint attack with solid defense is how you win consistently. This team will be modeled as so.

2015 Free Agency
After this trade, the Kings would have approximately $9.8 million in cap space with the roster below:

PG - Collison/McCallum
SG - McLemore
SF - Gay
PF - Horford/Landry/Moreland
C - Cousins

Although McLemore has improved greatly this season, I still think it makes sense to go after a wing with our cap space. With such a powerful, inside oriented team, our SG has to be a great 3pt shooter. Two players I would target in the offseason would be Afflalo and W. Matthews. Considering the Nuggets are struggling, I think it might be easier to grab Afflalo.

J. Butler is another option, but he isn't the best 3pt shooter who might cause floor spacing issues if he were to come in and start. If $9.8 mil were even enough to sign him, I think we would have to sell him as our sixth man. I know it's not very likely, but a bench of McCallum, Butler, and Landry sounds like the start of a very strong bench.

If we're unable to sign one of the better wings, we could target good roleplayers to fill out our roster such as M. Williams, Bellinelli, D. Green, Morrow, Knight, G. Green, Shumpert, Casspi, Middleton, Koufos, Dalembert, etc.

However, if we're able to sign Afflalo (possibly convince him to be our sixth man depending on how McLemore plays the rest of the season and since his scoring would most likely be better utilized in the second unit), use an exception on a backup center (Dalembert), and sign some a vets to the minimum, we could be a real contender come next season.

PG - Collison (35 min)/McCallum (13 min)
SG - McLemore (30 min)/Afflalo (18 min)
SF - Gay (36 min)/Afflalo (12 min)
PF - Horford (26 min)/Landry (22 min)/Moreland
C - Cousins (36 min)/Horford (6 min)/Dalembert (6 min)

Cousins - 36 min
Gay - 36 min
Collison - 35 min
Horford - 32 min
McLemore - 30 min
Afflalo - 30 min
Landry - 22 min
McCallum - 13 min
Dalembert - 6 min

the sooner Atlanta realizes they should start rebuilding, the better...maybe then they will put up a fire sale and then the Kings could make a hard push for Al and even Korver. I read on another thread that the Kings have a pretty nice amount of cap space they can spend in the summer? If they show they are legit all season and make the playoffs or just fall short, that would be enticing for a good FA out there to come here and help us get over that hump.

Horford would be awesome, when he's healthy. Al played 114 games last 3 seasons for an average of 38 games per season.

Might be the only way we even have a shot at him. They know he is injury prone and might want to consider a trade.

Let's say we make the playoffs, then suddenly Horford gets injured again (as usual for the past 3 seasons) and cannot play and makes us lose a very winnable 1st round match-up.

We knew it! But stubbornly we still insisted on getting him.

Oh, NO!

Scratch Horford then from the target list. We need to make sure the significant player we get will be durable enough and will not let us down big time.

I think we'd be giving up a little too much for Horford. The 1st rounder is the killer. ATL would probably accept this trade in a heartbeat. However, they're even being 6-5, they're 5th in the East. I think if ATL does have a fire sale, I'd offer Stauskas, JT, and Ray. Ray might look a lot better than Sessions. I don't see ATL going on a fire sale unless Millsap leaves them.

How would you feel about going after someone like Iman Shumpert? I think he could be had for around 7-8million per year. Maybe 9. He's a RFA.

Dude you don't worry about that when healthy he is a top 25 player and is perfect 3rd man. Elite defense/rim protection and is very good on offense. If we got Holford at the deadline even if it was for Ben/JT I'm willing to say we would make the playoffs this year and can make a deep run. People forget how good he is. He is a 17-10-2 guy with elite defense and that's playing out of position. He shoots 55% that's elite and that's with him shooting jump shots. No team is stopping a DMC/Holford/Gay front court.

I would do this in a heartbeat, if we can fool the Hawks in adding Dennis Schröder to the trade. Would love him on the Kings. Pass-First PG, good defender with the speed to get anywhere he wants and great Pick&Roll skills. The moment he cuts down his turnovers, he would be a very solid PG.

You don't include Ben in that trade. It would leave us a HUGE hole at SG. Nik isn't going to be able to start.... that would be terrible.

If a trade like that becomes available, you could plug in any average defender at SG and things would be OK. Horford plays a much bigger role than you'd imagine.

No we can't. We can barely shoot the 3 as it is, we're not trading away our best 3pt shooter. Horford would be a good add, but we NEED Ben right now. Nik is not ready to start, and Ben is our only other SG.

Holford isn't a good add he is a great add that makes us a scary team. I don't think people understand how impact full Holford is.
I'd do Nik/Ben/JT for Holford/thabo and I wouldn't think twice about it.

I like Horford, but not sure I want to give up that much, plus, we can't trade our 2016 first round pick because were likely to lose our 2015 first round pick and you can't trade your first round pick in consecutive years. Even if we don't lose our pick this year, we still couldn't trade it because it would probably be owed to the Bulls.

I really don't want to give up Ben, he fits perfect with Cousins and always plays hard and is improving at both ends. He's a nice piece to have and I think for chemistry he's a good player, he stays out of the way and steps up at different times.

I don't like the idea of giving up on Stauskas so quickly. What if he turns out to be Ben 2.0? (except Stauskas already has much better handles than Ben, and has shot better than ben did early on) We're going to need shooting off the bench, why give up on Nik so quickly?
