information on defense

Hall of Famer
wasn't sure where to put this i was just looking back at last years box scores. I saw something that interested me alot. We played 42 games without Ron Artest and we played 40 with him. Now my point.

In the games WITHOUT Ron we gave up 100 plus points 25 times.
In the games WITH Ron we gave 100 plus points 9 times and 2 of those were overtime games. That was just with one defensive minded player. Now with the coach and team thinking defene i am anxious to see how many games we give up 100 plus points. 34 in all last year.

Great stat, but just curious how many overtime games were in the first 42 games?

I am sorry 3 of the 25 were in overtime and upon searching that out I overlooked 1 more in the 9 we had when ron got here so 3 ot games for the pre Ron and 3 post Ron of the games we gave up 100 plus points.

The team did use a different style of play towards the end of the year too. It seemed the games were played at a much slower tempo. Not trying to knock Ron Ron, but I think the % of games where we didn't score 100pts was lower as well.

The goal or what I'd like to see is to improve on defnse so that the team give up 90 points or less per game, and see if we have the firepower to outscore that nightly.

Just no way to do that (hold teams to less than 90) unless you really slow the tempo. The year we led the league in defense we still allowed 94ppg just ebcause of the pace we played at (of course we were scoring 102ppg for a championship caliber +8ppg advanatage). If you slow it down to a walk and hold teams under 90, even a great team is going to be hardpressed to average 95 itself. I see us as more of a 100ppg team with our pace, so anythign down in the mid-90's would set us up for a good season.

I didn't see the preseason game, so i haven't seen any of the offense. Do we have an idea of what sort of pace is planned?

yeah like brick said. this year the plan is to run and take advantage of any fastbreak opportunities so less than 90 will be hard but, if we could maintain a 93-95 range we will be ok. putting pressure on the ball full court will help.

It was pretty quick. Not lightning like the Suns or anything, but similar in pace to what we've always run with a few extra shots generated by the constant full court pressure.
