If this team turns into a contender?...

... then I think Petrie is a genius. Think about this: our last team that was a contender was more about finesse, precision, cutting, passing, Princeton, etc...

This team as it's being assembled is filled with hard nosed-tough players. This teams success is gonna stem from evans' penetration leading to defensive breakdowns and either layups, dump offs or kick outs to shooters. Or we let cousins work it in the post which will lead to many kickouts. Not to mention that we have tremendous defensive potential now.

And if this team turns into a contender then Petrie would well have accomplished this feat in 2 entirely different ways. Pretty impressive.

Still a ways to go, but the blueprint is starting to show and it looks exciting and promising.

I'm not one to get ahead of myself so I will leave the main topic alone.

However, assuming the underlying optimism is true (that we become contenders again), I think that underlined statement right there would be a true testament to how good of a GM we have.

Comparing last year to this coming up season we have pretty much solved out interior D. Too many layups last season.. Our perimeter D wasn't bad last season, but we were getting killed inside and it made us look weak as a whole. We will be a better defensive team, but I am not expecting more than a 15th rating on PPG, and opp FG%. The year following I want to see us in the top 10, and after that top 5.

Offensively I think we cleared a few things up. No longer will Hawes be sitting outside with Tyreke without a big man inside to pass it off to. It should clear things up for our jump shooters. Last year the opponents defense would basically form a horse shoe, and force us into a jump shot.. Tyreke was the only player that was good enough to beat it consistently. If DMC and Dalembert could position themselves inside we have more room for the wings to get their own shots, and it will make it easier on Evans to pass it off inside to a big.

Definitely going to be an improvement this year. I would say about 35-40 games we will win, and the following year we will be in the playoffs.

Don't forget that we still have a lot of cap space that can be used to attract a FA or two. I think the Kings will look much more attractive with Tyreke and Cousins giving them a two-headed monster to build around.

Yeah, we still have $20 million this year to shop around and showcase our new beastly lineup of players to go along with Reke Havoc to free agents...things just got serious folks!!

20 Million this year with how much ? 12 million coming of the books next year ? Thats alot of money to hold onto to keep your core players and fill some holes :O

and im hoping thats the approach we take, give it a year to really let the kids roll and develop then use the cash to resign and really see what team we have before jumping at a FA.

If GP does have a master plan though and there is a FA that fits perfectly with what were trying to do then by all means am i for it. Im more than happy to wait it out though.

Not sure Sacramento is ever going to be a viable destination for free agents until we start winning. Which means we either keep the wallet tight or overpay someone just to get them here.

If Whiteside develops, we could let Sammy go, get Carmelo, and pay who we need to pay. That's a dynasty. Period.

Looking at the Top 25 Free Agents..we actually need a SG/SF to go along our Big 2 (Evans, Cousins)

1) Lebron (King James)
2) Wade
3) J Johnson
4) Gay
5) Paul Pierce
6) Ray Allen

Lebron and Wade is a long shot, J Johnson somewhat plays the same as Evans but could be a decent outside shooter/scorer. Gay would looks very attractive and will complement our young upstart line-up. Pierce and Ray Rays able veterans but are old.

Petri really downplayed FA for this year in his radio interview this morning. Sounds much more likely that the $ will be spent next year.

I agree with you to a certain extent. Its really all about prespective. If you were a big name freeagent, would you rather go to Boston right now, or to the Kings, if that were your only two choices. Particularly if your still young. You'd probably win more games with Boston next year, but long term the Kings will probably be a better situation..

All of a sudden Oklahoma looks like a nice destination. Its possible the Kings could make a dramatic improvement this coming season, similar to the Thunder last season. I'm not saying we'll make the playoffs, but I can see the possibility of a 40 win season. The changing of the guard has started.

I am also. Give our young guys and the people we got time to show there stuff, and when we feel we are ready to compete we can sign a guy or two who we feel will put us over the hump.

I think we only have $15 million

Right now the Kings total salaries for next season sits at just under 37 mil. The projection for next season is 56 mil. So that would give us around 19 mil to work with. However Cousins will be payed 2.8 mil as the 5th pick in the draft and Whiteside will probably command somewhere close to a mil. So your pretty close. You take another 4 mil off of 19 mil for the draft picks and your left with something close to 15 mil.

You figure they're going to resign Brockman and possibly another freeagent or two in the Udoka mold. I don't see us going after any big name freeagents. Unless you consider Anthony Morrow a big name.

This thread kind of got derailed from what I was trying to get at, which is fine, but I wanna ask it again. How impressive do you think it would be if this teams make up became a contender steming from the fact that the last contender Petrie assembled was completely different than this one?

Btw, there was a lot of talk about trying to aquire hasheem thabeet so my question is would you rather have him or whiteside?

I think that if we do in fact become contenders, which we will, Petrie will be considered one of the greatest evaluators of talent and the way a GM should be.

I like Whiteside's potenial better. Thabeet is a center and still seems like he is 2 steps behind most of the time. Whiteside is a better athlete IMO, and is more of a PF who will be able to play both PF and Center in the future.

Great assessment. I think the two statements in bold should be flipped around though. I dont think this teams success stems from the offensive end. Our new teams success will undoubtedly stem from the defensive side of the ball. If and when the Kings turn into an elite defensive team is when we will see the most success.

Btw, there was a lot of talk about trying to aquire hasheem thabeet so my question is would you rather have him or whiteside?

I would have rather had Thabeet until the moment we got Cousins. Now, with that gaping hole filled, I'll take the swing PF/C who could potentially pair with Cousins down the road. Cousins and Thabeet just could never play together.

The real boon of the free agent class next year was size, and frankly we just don't need it anymore. Carmelo's probly going to resign with Denver and the only other real name is Tony Parker who doesn't fit.

Maybe make a small signing or two, but just hold onto the space and retain flexibility for trades and resignings. It will be a whole new ballgame after the new CBA.

Contender will rest on Greene and Casspi

Greene and Casspi, if given consistent minutes can bust out treys. They have the range. They can't be blocked. With Cousins posting inside and Evans getting into the lane, we need these shooters to step up and pop some treys. If they can step up their shooting game this year, we can be contenders. I would not call Petrie a genius though. I would say he was smart enough to change his philosophy. In my opinion, he's done a very poor job in the draft with Garcia, Douby, Hawes, and JT. He finally got smart and realized that he has to go for some athleticism to compete so he went for Tyreke and get some athleticism and strength back. Cousins has strength and potential athleticism with he can take is fat down to 10%. Whiteside is a freak athlete. I'm confident that we can be a very good defensive team this year.
