I have no doubt

I have no doubt that the 01-02 Kings would have killed in this years PO. I was just watching a video that made me tear up. Spurs? No problem for the old Kings. Then the Mavs? we eould have ripped them up. Dwayne Wade is a beast, but I think the nostalgia Kings could have taken the Heat in 5 too.

Brickie used to remind KingsFans posters when those guys were playing in top form how lucky we were, and how this sort of excitement and pride is fleeting. He was right. Those were wonderful times. It seems like a lifetime ago, before all the depressing trades, cost-cutting measures, the Arena debaucle, and the Adelman firing. Oh well, pass the bottle. :(

To be honest, I am more excited now than I ever have been as a Kings fan. I think some even more exciting times are to come.

I, too, am looking forward to the upcoming season with an optimism I haven't felt in a long time.

There was a "we were robbed" feeling going into the 2002-2003 season, but this time it's different.

Yes, we were lucky "back in the day," and Bricklayer wasn't the only one telling people to appreciate the good times while they lasted. But being a sports fan is all about renewing optimism, having faith, etc.

This season - for the first time in a while - there's new vitality. If Petrie makes some good trades, it could be a VERY interesting time to be a Kings fan.

:D

First off, there's nothing wrong with any of the music in that video file lol. There was some good mixes/songs in there. Someone's showing their age. :D

Secondly that video made me realize this. We are an all star PF, a semi mobile center and a solid backup PG away from being that team again. Which is really want we've been saying this whole off season.

-Pryzbilla
-Not sure who to get for backup PG.

This is assuming we keep Bonzi, or even if we don't really. Kevin could be Christie with more offense.

We are never going to be "that team again" and that's ok by me. That doesn't mean we can't put together the pieces you mentioned and win a championship, but it will never be that team. There was so much more to that team than just the players on the court and what they achieved. My girlfriend who is normally a sports widow even got excited about that team.

Meanwhile in Bizarro World, the 2001-2002 Kings did indeed roll through this year's west coast playoff teams before being stopped in the NBA finals by the 87-88 Celtics led by standout rookie Len Bias.

You'll never have those players you're right. But, why were they so exciting?? Because they won, and entertained us in doing so.

If you had a team that was winning and making us excited we would be that excited again. The key to that whole situation I believe was an all star PF. BIbby is in his prime, and if he did it then, he can sure do it now with the passing etc. He just needs a few better pieces to work with.

If we're going to talk about fantasy/Bizarro world, consider this:

Had we NOT made the Webber trade, BUT had made all subsequent trades, our lineup would look like this:

PG - Bibby
SG - Wells
SF - Artest
PF - Webber
C - Miller

...

...

...

...sigh...

I still think there was more to it than that. First off, just the emotion of a longtime doormat franchise finally getting to championship level for the first time. It was the highpoint of that particular era. That raised the bar for any team that follows.

Second was the free flowing basketball game the Kings played coming out of a rather bleak period for NBA offenses. The Kings really did make basketball fun again for a lot of people, not just Kings fans.

So even if we win a championship its still going to be a bit different. We're moving more towards defense and I'm not sure we're ever going to have the frontcourt passing that we did with Vlade and Webber. I am not sure that some of us still won't look back afterwards at the 2001-2002 team and think what might have been had Webber stayed healthy and the Maloofs kept the pocketbooks open.

i don't think we will ever see such a combination of big men with passing abilities again (and if we do, and they're on the kings, i would be EXTREMELY thrilled). and i will always look back at that moment, at what could've been had that game against the mavs in 2003 never happened.

Actually, the game could have happened. It was that one particular moment, there by the baseline, and the minutes after that were the turning points. Had Webber gotten back up and been able to continue, everything might well have turned out completely differently.

:(

I worked nights this particular season and I never saw this game, but I always got the impression that Webber was playing on borrowed time and this injury was bound to happen sooner or later. Now maybe if he had made it all the way to the offseason he might have bought even more time with rest or minor surgery. Do I have my facts wrong?

My comment, pdxKingsFan, was more rooted in "what if" than actual events. I guess I was saying "What if Webber didn't have a bad knee?" and not "What if Webber's bad knee had lasted just a little while longer?"

Of course, neither was true. He did have a bad knee and it did take him to the floor where he stayed... And that image is as clear in my mind's eye today as it was then.

We've got our star: RON ARTEST. The other two I agree on, but we don't need too many cooks in the kitchen.

Different thing. Ron is a star. But he's not the equal of the top top stars, and in particular on offense you simply cannot just let him take over ala a Wade or whatnot. He's also never won anything, and the one deep run he did have in the playoffs ended with him melting down and having a terrible ECF.

A great piece, but he who builds his house of cards with Ron Artest as its sole anchor...

More cooks! More cooks!
