How do you judge a player?

Unfortunately, I judge them on their "on the court" actions and their "off the court" actions.

Even before talent comes into play - I have to actually not get repulsed by on the court celebrations that would result in a left cross if it were ever done to taunt me.

I can't stand "shirt poppin" or flexing or any such nonsense. I think - go do your job.

So, anyone that passes that test is okay in my book ... then it comes to talent.

PS - Anyone that takes shots away from Reef goes down in my book as a sub-par player. :D

We get so many threads posted by certain players' big fans. Sometimes, they are so onesided, or blind to that player's faults that it got me wondering how we all judge whether a player is good, bad, or mediocre.

Is it where they went to school or what country they are from? Do we judge them on NBA readiness or potential? Is it based on how big their contract is? Do we make allowances if they are just a 1st or 2nd year player? Or, do we judge everyone by the best player to ever play the position, in which case no one can ever measure up?

So, if you will, try and explain how you judge a player's value?

I think there's a blend of art and science to this. It is much the same as judging value in an employee for a given job. In my line of work, I use the terms 'starters' and 'bench players' a lot. But back to your question:

A player's value is judged by many factors. I think most would agree on the factors; it is a matter of prioritizing and ranking them when making a decision on a player. Athleticism, experience, pure basketball skills like shooting/rebounding/dribbling/passing, etc., toughness, team approach, coachability, commitment, etc.

I'd like to see how Geoff Petrie would answer this one....
