Hollywood sign for sale

Very strange that the official Hollywood sign website at http://www.hollywoodsign.org/ doesn't mention this.

I wonder if this guy is also going to sell London Bridge.

;)

I just sent an email to the contact person on the official site. I'll share her response, if I get one.

Gee, ya think?

;)

It wouldn't be the first time someone concocted a pretty elaborate hoax on eBay and I doubt it will be the last.

According to the history on the offical site the sign was rebuilt in 1978. This could be the orginal sign or what is left of it that predated 1978. This seller has been on Ebay along time I do not think it is a fake.

a Hollywood sign for $300,000? seems a little odd and if this seller has been selling the suppose Hollywood sign then he must feel good making people believe it's real.

This could be a lot of things, including a very well-constructed fake. I'm just suspicious because I watch a LOT of news and I have not seen any mention of this although the seller keeps saying it's all over the news.

That's why I sent the link to the official site. They should be able to clear it up by either confirming it or exposing it for one of the best frauds I've seen in a long time.

AleksandarN - Thanks for the link to the other site. I found some stuff that makes it sound as though you may, in fact, be correct:

Hal Brown Jr., of the Pacific Outdoor Advertising Company, was contracted to rebuild the sign. The Hollywood sign was very personal to Brown, because his uncle, George Roche, had built the original sign in 1923. Brown hired Cornelius Van Dam as the engineer responsible for designing the new Hollywood sign. Van Dam designed the new sign with a more durable structure, but the same dimensions as the original. The plans were approved by the City of Los Angeles, the Cultural Heritage Board and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The legendary Hollywood sign was demolished and reconstruction began in August 1978. The new sign was unveiled in November 1978 before a national television audience of 60 million people.

So, what I guess is being sold is, in fact, the original, not the one currently standing on the hillside, which was what I originally - and possibly erroneously - assumed.

Yes I know I was curious too. I had to search and find out if it was real. But hey I am bored. Why not waste time looking up useless pieces of information. I got nothing else to do.;)

It's a ligit story, When we were down in LA last week they had it all over the news. Its the sign that was tore down a while back. It looked like pieces of scrap metal to me. He said it was not the entire sign that he got rid of some of the pieces already.

He probably went out and bought some scrap and painted it white. HAHA
