Section 101
All-Star
He just became available !
I thought they resigned him?
that's shocking. I've been watching the game for a long time, and even I can just barely remmeber in foggy fashion a time when Frank Layden was coaching that team ratehr than Sloan.
Very very tough to see him going anywhere else though. He's old, only a year or two away from retirement in all liklihood anyway, and has never seeked out the limelight. You would have to think this will be it for him barring an impossible offer somewhere.
I know it's sudden, and we'll have to wait for more. But hypothetically, wouldn't you agree Sloan would be a great fit for 2 years, to really help teach and lay a solid foundation for our young guys, before he bows out of the league for good? With what he was able to do with Stockton and DWill, he would be great for Tyreke.
I have a feeling that Sloan is done for good. He's been coaching for a long, long time without interruption.
There is some question I hope everybody realizes, not only about whether Sloan would even want to come in to a team like ours midseason, but whether in such a chaotic mess it would even be a good decision. We've been playing well. Been right there. Fire the coaching staff, bring in a whole new one midseason, and a new one who is irascible and has never coached any group but the Jazz, and things could just fall apart. We are not fallen apart right now. Give me a handful of smart plays, maybe 1 extra made basket in several games, and we just got done beating the league's elite 5 of 6 games. We didn't of course. But would suddenly firing Westphal and bringing in an entirely new coach with a new system out of left field just allow us to smoothly get that extra hoop a game? Or is it more likely to disrupt and confuse a young team that finally looks to have it mostly figured out.
He would not be able to do any more with this team than what Paul Westphal has been able to do. Sorry to break your hearts if anyone honestly believes otherwise, but that, my friends, is true...
That is complete speculation. Speculation is not fact. Opinion is not fact. You present something as a fact, yet back it up only with opinion, lacking any substance whatsoever?
Not to mention the track records of both says different. But hey, you're not interested in facts.
But have you read the reports do far? First off, he just signed an extension, so he wants to continue coaching. 2nd, reportedly he and DWill had problems behind the scenes, and Sloan felt ownership was listening to DWill more than him. I'm not saying he's not done as a coach, but I haven't heard anything to lead me to believe he's done coaching.
Well, he's apparently done enough coaching that behind-the-scenes arguments with one player are enough to make him walk away.
How do you imagine he'd enjoy dealing with DeMarcus? Or the unspecified bogeyman (bogeyMEN, most likely) who keeps getting blamed for not running the plays that get called now - how would Sloan deal with that if a spat with Deron Williams is enough to make him up and quit immediately after he signed an extension?
He wouldn't last a week here right now. All respect to Jerry Sloan, but he wouldn't last a week. You want to toss away Westphal, who for all of his faults seems to be the most patient person in the world, and who is starting to get results for a week of Jerry Sloan and then Kenny Natt v.2? That looks like a profoundly bad idea to me. Again, all respect to Jerry Sloan, but I doubt highly that he wants to be here, and I doubt highly that he'd tolerate being here. It's not a realistic dream.
Let's see what PW's accomplishment is at the end of the season, and if a new coach is needed then go after Sloan (assuming he still wants in the game).
