Hello Dylan Cardwell

I'll rip on Perry for his self-help tweets and his straight-from-paperback list of team attributes that guide his building process...but a guy like this who wears his heart on his sleeve will absolutely rub off on the locker room. Looking forward to the three-year deal Cardwell is going to get after the trade deadline.

Is there something negative or bothersome about self help posts?

"No one thought I was a NBA player. I'm not supposed to be here. I'm living my childhood dream. It's just a dream come true."
At the very least we can see the type of player Perry likes from the draft. High energy. A little bit of an edge/attitude on the court, but at the same time a really good guy. Hard workers.

I think for guys you get late in the draft/undrafted, the best are often guys that have a clear hole in their game but also do certain things at a high level. At worst, Dylan will be floating around the league as an end of bench big for the next 5 to 10 years. At best we have a defensive anchor that learns to be helpful on offense.

Accidentally finding choirboy Dennis Rodman certainly helps the rebuild
He gets extra possessions from his rebounding and gets fast breaks started with his defense. The Kings have enough scorers. It would be nice if he had Max’s push shot but Cardwell is already the best and maybe only defender with size we have had in a long time.

He is shooting .459 from 3-10 feet, which is an improvement over what we first saw, and .739 at the rim. Overall, Cardwell's FG% is 53.8%, just behind Raynaud at 54.5%, albeit in only 18 games thus far.

His offense is raw. You can hide behind numbers if you want. But he isn’t in for offense. But if he get a nice floater like raynaud he will be cashing .

Cardwell update. Since Dec 18th, when he's joined the rotation as a full-time player. There is a 4-game stretch he didn't play in the middle of this, but:

15 games:

20.6 MPG
5.3 PPG
8.3 RPG
1.3 APG
1.7 BPG
0.7 SPG

18.7% TRB
(!)
56.8% TS (!! Now we're getting somewhere. He gets this to 60%+, he's capable of being a starter)
10.6% USG
53.8% FT
(This gotta go up)

111.6 ORtg
104.8 DRtg
(Best on the team by 5.2 points if we don't include the Domas games or Dario low samples)
+6.7 Net (Best on the team by 5.6 points if we don't include Domas low sample)

Just to give this net rating some context, if we extrapolated this to total team net rating (obviously a leap), but it would be good for the 4th best Net rating in basketball. The defense with Cardwell on is 0.4 points better than OKC's top rated defense. You can't just extrapolate 1for1 and say "SO IF WE PLAY CARDWELL 40 MPG, WE'RE A TITLE TEAM" or anything, but I think it shows fairly soundly he's playing excellent, high level, impactful basketball right now. He's a giant reason the Kings have played much more competitive basketball over the last month, including the 4-game win streak.

He's definitely helping. The next step is all about what the Raptors did to him by leaving him on an island. If this were a few years ago Cardwell would be unplayable but the league trends should help him out a bit.

I would guess if a Kuminga / DeRozan trade is happening the warriors are pushing for Cardwell if it can be done

Rudy is obviously the absolute ceiling of this kind of comp, but that's the mold Cardwell has to go to be a +starter. I don't need any sort of self creation outside of being able to handle dump offs, dunker spot, put backs off OReb and essentially make all of those looks. 12-15% USG and 62-65% TS with his current level of defense (with less fouling) is a 10 year NBA starter. We got a ways to go before the offense gets there, but I like the progression we've seen from SL to now. Lots of growth with his touch around the rim in the last 6 months.

He does a really good job of passing out to the perimeter on those offensive board too. Find at least one post shot he can hit and figure out the fouling.

Floating around the league? Eff that, this dude better be a King for life.

Straight up Ben Wallace numbers last game. 13 boards, 3 dimes, 1 stl, 4 blocks.... 2 points, and awesome crowd work!!

There is no good reason to trade Cardwell. Are you kidding me. You don’t get gifted a diamond in the rough often.

What's hilarious is that, inept as this franchise is, they're doing well on the margins with the undrafted types. Keon Ellis and Dylan Cardwell are both great finds. It's too bad they're alienating the former and may ultimately decide to move him. Hopefully they can commit to the latter, because Cardwell has got difference-making potential on the defensive end.

A good defensive big is worth a lot more than a defensive guard. I’m not sure why they did Leon like that though

Cardwell is a legit rotation big.

Max is on the top 10 rookie list but I think Cardwell has higher impact on the game. But good evaluating by Perry.

Kings should sign him full time to the big club soon.

Why would you add Cardwell into a Kuminga deal? Honestly, the iso scoring players we have are leading to the current record. Won’t change with Kuminga. You can get away with having an iso guy on the floor I suppose but you need defenders who are as important as scorers. Cardwell is elite at defense. Kuminga is not elite at anything.
When is the last time we had a defensive big man? Really can’t remember. For once, can we actually have this guy in the rotation for a while.
