Hello Dylan Cardwell

I like him. He’s a legitimate good defender inside and athletic and quick enough to switch. He makes an impact out there. It’s not just a lost season feel good story like Jack Cooley or Brockman.

He’s been a joy to watch and as i mentioned in the game thread, it’s fun to see a guy who is beaming with enthusiasm for the opportunity he has.

Cardwell since becoming more or less a regular rotation player after his stint in the G-League. Since 12/18:

9 games

20 MPG
5.4 PPG
7.6 RPG
1.7 BPG
0.8 SPG

17.2% TRB
53.6% TS (Not good, but it's getting closer to passable)
11.7% USG

111.4 ORtg
108.4 DRtg
+2.9 NRtg (only positive Net on the team in this span)

Very positive upward trajectory for him sticking as an NBA player. Potentially a special rebounder/shot-blocker

Ken Faried had himself a 8 year NBA career by just hustling and rebounding. Cardwell can follow the same trajectory with consistent minutes, improved conditioning/diet and some skill work

Isn't there a deadline to lock him up to an actual NBA contract?

I'd be completely flabbergasted if it doesn't happen. Undeniable impact out there. Plus vibes, aura, and whatever else the kids say these days.

Cut Saric add cardwell. Or see what you shop out I. Trades and see if there is an extra roster spot

I don't know whether there's a deadline or not, but they don't actually have to sign him to an NBA contract before the end of this season. If they just send him to Stockton for the duration of the upcoming road trip, he'll be eligible to play in all of the Kings' remaining games by the time they get back.

What I'll be tuned into is whether they sign him to a full contract for next season.

There has been a lot of criticism of GM Scott Perry on this board, much of it unfairly rooted in his past track record and in what some people choose to infer (ahem… I was told the word is “suspicion”) from the moves he made in Sacramento. Those assumptions are often used to claim that he isn’t doing his job effectively.

That said, Perry and Coach Christie have consistently emphasized their commitment to building a younger, more athletic, hardworking, and defense-oriented culture since day one. I challenge anyone, Kings fans or otherwise, to argue that Dylan Cardwell doesn’t embody those values (the same can be said for Keon Ellis). Both still have plenty to learn before becoming reliable rotation contributors, but the blueprint is clearly there for each of them.

If the team ultimately trades Keon Ellis, it would be disappointing but at least somewhat understandable. He has a more established résumé and is already viewed around the league as a proven 3-and-D guard. Letting Dylan Cardwell walk, however, would be an entirely different matter, not because he’s some hidden star the team must keep at all costs, but because it would completely undermine all the culture talk for me, and that would be the final straw to end my long-earned, 20-plus years of Kings fandom.

Got it! Thanks for the clarification!
