Head assistant? Pitino? Anyone else?

First, welcome to the board...

Reggie has already said that he wants someone with a lot of NBA experience to sit next to him as his lead assistant. I think that pretty much lets Pitino out; and I'm glad. We have a college coach. We don't need more college assistants. We need assistants with good NBA backgrounds and strengths.

(BTW, I moved this to the Personnel Moves forum...)

I altered the title a little bit. Let's see if people have some ideas.

I know I'd love to see Coachie back.

:)

We talked about this a bit when Reggie was first announced. Pitino is obviously not in a million years, and now that old sleazebag Tark has reared his slimy head, you just have to hope that that would not happen. So one possibility seemed guys who Reggie knew back in his playing days as his former coaches. Maybe Matt Guokas, Paul Westphal, Kevin Loughery, maybe even Bill Fitch. Guys who coached for years but were now long removed from the game. Of the crew Westphal and Fitch are both quite old, but actually won titles. Both might have the wrong personlaities for it though. Guokas was always an amiable fellow, never won anything, but friendly enough. Remember little about Loughery's M.O.

You mean Pitino would take millions and millions in pay cut to be a lowly NBA assistant? He recently signed a 6 yr $12.5 million extension as Louisville head coach that also gives him a $5 million bonus if he stays the duration.

brainstorming exercise.......Rick Barry, Jon Barry, Hubie Brown, Dr. Jack Ramsey
Dr. Jack, eh?? Never thought of that one before. As far as 'Del Harris-type' guys...wow, not too many...Doug Moe, perhaps?? Hmmm...too bad Cotton wasnt around still, he'd be perfect.

I thought of Cotton as well, instantly Would have been perfect. But of course he passed.

Hubie's done for good -- was too much for his health. And again, think it has to be somebody with a relation to Reggie. As a newbie he's not going to just hire some old stranger, and the old stranger isn't going to have much interest in working for the newbie (unless he sees an opening if the newbie fails and wants back in).

Rick Barry? That's left field, imposible to predict. Thing is, he has a monster ego, hard to imagine him being a #2 to Reggie.

Dr. Jack is just way too old now and apparently struggling with health issues (cancer, his wife has advanced Alzeheimer's). He's 82, and while he knows Geoff, this guy probably has to know Reg.

Doug Moe is already employed in Denver, and given the historical ties, hard to see him leave.

Well, I know Bob Weiss was mentioned in that thread, but I'm not extremely fond of bringing him in, at least for the role in which Reggie wants. Wonder if John MacLeod would be a possibity??

Hmmm- so we need someone with head coaching experience, preferably someone who has been in and around the NBA for a long time, someone who has a previous relationship with Reggie, and someone without much ego to impart his wisdom on Reggie but still let him run the show...

Sounds like Jerry Reynolds to me!!!

LOL! I am kidding. What a disaster that would be. But the scary thing is that he meets all of the spoken and unspoken criteria for Reggie's lead assistant.

No mention of Scott Brooks. He seemed to relate well with the player last year.

The point was for Reg to find a veteran former NBA head coach to show him the ropes ala Del Harris with Avery in Dallas. Brooks doesn;t fit that bill, and would have to be ok wiht being further down the bench. Brooks is more of a #1 asssitant to a veteran coach ala Karl or Adelman. But with a newbie coach, you kind of need the reverse -- a veteran top assistant.

The way things are going it can't be anyone who knows, talks with, though about, or has heard the name of Rick Adelman.

I like those guys...but wonder how Lucas would fit the already noted 'Del Harris-type' of guy Reggie wants for his lead assistant. I like Moncrief for sure, Worthy would be a coup, as far as I'm concerned...I'm sure there's a good handful of other teams that would love to have Big Game James on their staff. The only one I dont think would happen might be English, only because he's in a more evolved situation in Toronto, as far as young and rebuilding, and I'm not sure he'd want to leave, but you never know. I do like the idea of Reggie bringing in a few of his 80's counterparts to join his crew.

I heard that in a radio interview that Barry laughed when asked about his reaction to the Theus hiring. I don't think that would go over to well...

I dont think Rick would make a good coach in the YMCA league, let alone the NBA as an assistant...I dont think Reggie would be that errr...um...whats the word I'm looking for here?:D

Do we really want good winning coaches while we are rebuilding though, or do we want coaches that are for the players and are all about developing our youth. Not sure if Pitino is a players kind of coach but if it makes Theus happier he may do a better job, we gotta be realistic we are not going anywhere untill 2-3 years so winning coaches dont matter as much as coaches that are good with players. Who knows if we picked up a Vet. previous head coach and threw Pitino in there as an assisntant we could develop a pretty good coaching staff that might be able to win in the future,
or we could just have a bunch of sucky coaches that help our lottery odds and only help develop the players.

How do sucky coaches help develop players? The key to rebuilding is NOT losing for losing's sake, it's losing because your core is young and not in its prime, still learning the ropes, etc. That's what separates the successful rebuilds (Miami, San Antonio) from the classic perpetual losers (Atlanta). Sure, you take a dive and pick up some nice peices in the lottery, but retain the mindset that the eventual goal is winning when your peices hit their prime.

Some coaches are more focused on winning then developing players, if we get a coach whos devoted to development more then winning it couldnt work any better for us. Not saying dont not focus on winning but focus on development more.
