MONARCHS ACQUIRE GUARD KRISTIN HAYNIE FROM DETROIT IN EXCHANGE FOR
FORWARD CRYSTAL KELLY

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., August 17, 2009 – The Sacramento Monarchs announced today the organization has acquired guard Kristin Haynie from Detroit in exchange for forward Crystal Kelly.

“We hate to lose a young post like Crystal, but with Rebekkah now recovered we have five posts and we are in need of a perimeter guard, after losing Chelsea to her injury,” said Monarchs General Manager and Head Coach John Whisenant. “Haynie was very helpful during the Monarchs 2005 Championship run and our trip to the 2006 WNBA Finals as both a backup point guard to Ticha and a shooting two guard. This was the right move at this time due to the circumstances.”

Sacramento originally selected Haynie in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft. In her three seasons with the Monarchs she averaged 14.8 minutes, 3.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.8 steals per game. Haynie was a member of the 2005 WNBA Championship team and also helped the Monarchs win back-to-back Western Conference Titles (2005, 2006). On Feb. 2, 2008, Haynie was selected by the Atlanta Dream in the expansion draft and played for them for one season before signing with Detroit for the 2009 season. She is currently averaging 8.1 minutes, 2.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 0.7 steals per game with the Detroit Shock this season. Her career averages through her five seasons are 13.9 minutes, 3.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.8 steals per game.

Kelly was acquired by the Monarchs via waivers on May 18, 2008. She originally was selected by the Houston Comets in the third round (31st overall) of the 2008 WNBA Draft. The Comets waived her on May 15. During her two seasons with the Monarchs, Kelly has appeared in 56 games and averaged 14.9 minutes, 6.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.1 blocks per game.
