Interesting article from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Hopefully he'll pick up some dunks from the Reign Man

Hawes was thrilled to play against Kemp. The two worked out together before the 2007 draft. "That's the biggest (thrill) playing against a legend. Everyone has seen the video and that's like the Reign Man, and especially with the Sonics leaving, it makes it a little bit extra (thrilling)."

Kemp and Hawes exchanged post moves and Hawes is in very good shape and had no problem getting to the basket

Looking forward to summer league already...

Kemp for big man coach:D

Actually maybe it's not such a bad idea?

He could definitely add some "oomph" to several of our more finesse centers, that's for sure. I doubt he'd help Mikki Moore (a perennial role player), or resurrect the career(s) of the fallen Kenny Thomas and Shareef Abdur-Rahim, but if we do get him, I wouldn't mind drafting several projects at the 12th slot--JaVale McGee or DeAndre Jordan. We need an athletic shotblocking big to invest in, and Kemp can be there to teach there some killer instinct.

Here is bulk of article posted by Gary Washburn in Seattlepi.com on 5/24 (whose linke I could not get):

Kemp vs. Hawes
I was at the Rip The Cut Tournament for several hours Saturday at Cleveland High School and watched the entire game between the Home Team -- Brandon Roy, Jamal Crawford, Will Conroy and Spencer Hawes -- and Old School -- featuring Eldridge Recasner and Shawn Kemp. And yes, the 38-year-old Kemp was going 1-on-1 with the 20-year-old Hawes in a battle of Seattle-then against Seattle-now.

Kemp did not embarrass himself in 1 1/3 games Saturday. I say 1 1/3 because he showed up with seven minutes left in Old School's first game, stepped onto the court and did a coast-to-coast score with a layin. Kemp can still dunk with ease, his hops have not declined that much, but it was obvious the Reign Man was trying to wow the crowd with no-look passes and a few reverse dunks. Sorry folks, there were no replays of his dunks on Alton Lister or Chris Gatling (Dunk No. 5). And by the way, in what world do you give dap to the dude who just dunked on you? Only to Shawn Kemp.

When Kemp hit the court Saturday, the guy guarding him whispered to himself "Damn, Shawn Kemp." And he spent two minutes in awe. Now I am not saying Kemp could be an All-Star Again, but he could help an NBA team in limited minutes because he knows the game probably much more than in his physical heyday.

He definitely held his own against Hawes, who wasn't exactly playing at maximum tilt. None of those NBA guys were playing as if it were the playoffs. They were just trying to entertain the fans, which they did. Conroy has crazy handles and plays with fire, even arguing vehemently with the official on a few calls.

interesting. maybe kemp could teach him how to dunk like he did in his prime :D. i actually saw kemp about 4 months ago. when i got off work i decided to visit my friend at footlocker and there was a guy purchasing a huge stack of shoes and clothes, and to my suprise it was shawn kemp w/ his daughter, he seemed out of shape. my friend was pretty stoked. but that's neither here nor there. hawes is gonna be a great player and learning from kemp can't hurt. hopefully.

Teach him how to dunk? That doesn't make any sense.

um wow. you know that sentence does continue, i mean sentences don't just stop randomly. i believe it says: "teach him how to dunk like he did in his prime". he meaning kemp of course (if you haven't seen kemp dunk, http://youtube.com/watch?v=-KSevqDFkh4) but i guess you can stop reading sentences whenever you wish ... even in the middle of one :). although it was a joke, no way will spencer dunk like that.

Joke or not, Spencer doesn't particularly need to learn to dunk any differently than he already does. His value to us is not going to be in going all Shawn Kemp on the basket; as a matter of fact given the wide gulf in athleticism between the two players it's questionable whether Hawes should model any part of his game whatsoever after Kemp. Hawes will dunk fine, if not spectacularly, when he has the opportunity. We need him to have a skilled (rather than power-based) low post game. For instance, he mentioned at one point that he wanted to return after this season with a passable sky hook. That would be a great offensive weapon for Spencer, but I don't think Kemp is going to teach it to him.

I'm aware what was said after that, it doesnt' make any sense. It's Kemp's athleticism and other physical traits that made him such a great dunker, it really doesn't have a whole lot to do with any "knowledge" of dunking. The joke would've made sense if it was about Kemp's athleticism, which is the bigger difference between him (in his prime) and spencer.

agreed to all of that. but again haha it was a joke. i know you said joke or not. but joke is what it was.

i understand it's his athleticism that made kemp a great dunker and it can't just be given to hawes, but that's the beauty of the joke. i know the joke wasn't that hilarious, but again, still a joke. but i do agree with what you two have said, we do need him to have a skilled low-post game, but i wouldn't mind the power.
