Hawes versus Brandon Wright

#31
One of my good friends lives in Seattle and played college basketball. He is a huge UW fan, and attends a majority of their basketball games. He has been telling me for months that Hawes is overated, and is not worthy of a top 10 pick. He kept telling me ever since he declared for the draft that if the Kings picked him, he was going to laugh his a$$ off.

Well, I received a text message right as we drafted good ole Hawes...it was a bunch of laughter.

He said that Hawes does have good skills, but that he does not play one ounce of defense, cannot rebound at all, and has no vertical leap.

This post may have made sense before Charlotte picked today, but what's the point now? B. Wright wasn't available when Sac picked.

I still don't see who we chose ahead of Hawes. We don't need another SF, and no better PFs or Cs were around at 10. Did we want to take a chance on a remaining PG?

I did. He got owned by the Lopez twins, but apparently that was in the thick of his illness. He actually played a much better game against Stanford when the two met in Washington.

Yeah when Spencer got healthier. You see, I think a lot of people are judging Spencer as if there is no room for improvement or that he is 24 years old or something. He is 19! He has a lot to work on and has a lot to work from.

Exactly. I can respect those that have legit concerns about him as a player, based on actual viewing of his game. However, many seem to have completely overracted based on the fact that he's a white center. Granted, there's not a great track record on that profile, but come on....let's just chill on this a little until training camp.

How high can Tim Duncan jump?

Let's not forget that Hawes has a 9+ ft standing reach here. It's not like the guy is going to be bricking dunks.

Why do people keep saying Duncan isn't athletic??? He can jump! He can run! He's quick! He's not only good because he's got good fundamentals, he's also an extremely good athlete.

Rather fine with the pick, i mean people are whining because we past up a 210 6-9 sf/pf tweener... im sure he would of fit in well with our other so called PFs.
Umm, our other "PFs" are 6-7 and 6-9 with gimpy knees. That's actually a lot different than a 6-9 player with long arms who can jump.

That's like saying you'd rather have Oden than Hawes. Well obviously, who wouldnt? Life isn't NBA Live though, you cant make magical trades and get any player you want.
Did you read the title of the topic you're posting in?

are you serious? pac-10 was if not the top conference, one of the toughest in the country, with usc, oregon, arizona, ucla, and washington state. All of which were very strong teams.
The Pac-10 was a tough conference last year, but it was a tough guard-heavy conference. The only other team with a decent big man was Stanford. It might also be worth noting that Washington was one of the highest ranked teams going in (which had a lot to do with Spencer Hawes) and finished with one of the worst records.

Are you sure he isn't talking about julian wright? I would take Julian Wright over Hawes too.

It's always a good idea around here simply to speak for yourself and not fall into the habit of using the "i'm pretty sure most of us" type rationale.

Ha...the point of my original post was very simple. You can't simply look at Hawes statistics in 1 year of college and instantly claim he will be a terrible rebounder. I personally found it interesting that he was actually a better rebounder (per game average) last year than Brandan Wright. Yet, most (including myself) seemed to think wright would have solved more of our long term needs.

lol well we will see how good hawes turns out to be but i just dont have my hopes considering how 99% of all the other skilled post players turned out to be in the NBA. Im not trying to say that having a guy thats skilled in the low block is not good but whats not good is when the guy can only do that. A couple of names that come to my mind is our very own Shareef abdur rahim, Eddy Curry, Chris Mihm, and probably more but i just cant think of them right now. :)

Those kind of players i would rather not even have on my team even if they put up 18-20 ppg at the PF/C spot but become a defensive liability and cant grab rebounds like a player in that position should.

As for Wright. He's got skill, athleticism and loads of potential to be one of the top PF in the future.

I like Hawes. I watched him play a ton last year and think he will become a good NBA center. He had some great games last year against pretty good teams. (23 and 12 against LSU, 13 and 15 against a pretty good UCLA team) The pac 10 had so many good teams last year it was one of the toughest conferences in the country. I like the pick and def will at least give the kid a chance.
