HARRY GILES (merged)

He moved better than I expected, was out there talking trash and banging. Jump shot surprised me. I'll hold off on expectations for a bit but liked the basic tool kit I saw.

One concern I do have that can be quickly extinguished soon or grow is his above the rim game and finishing. Maybe he just didn't have the opportunity, maybe he's a little nervous to get up in the air some. But I'm hoping it was just the game opportunities .

Pleasantly surprised for now.

I liked Giles intensity and fire, but i feel like i watched a different game from everyone else. Giles and Bagley look very raw and doubt they'll be making the impact Doncic will.
Giles and Bagley look "very raw"? Seriously? Sorry but I couldn't disagree more. They looked young and enthusiastic and made a few expected mistakes but the talent and athleticism in both of them is beyond obvious.

Yah apart from those jitter from HG and MB35 forcing the issue on a possession I loved what I saw from the Duke alums.

And agree VF, both of them are athletic and tenacious. Giles securing that FT miss and instantly laying it in was awesome!

Let’s just say I have requested Thur off so I can see our boys beat the Heat! Hope to see you all out there!

Those were just nerves. He will be fine on the offensive end

LOL I can't even see the post you're referring to and I know both who it is and what they said. I unhid their content in a previous thread and it was literally the exact same thing. Pathetic.
I don't agree with the other poster's sentiments but it was in context of replying to another (new) poster who has shown up bashing Giles and Bags. The picks are made, so it's pretty pointless worrying about guys who aren't going to play for us. Based on their first showing, I'm optimistic. Consider with the probably exception of Fox, we've spent most of the last summer leagues worrying that our shiny new draft pick looks lost, I'm happy with what we saw yesterday even considering the possibility that JJ is the only true healthy SF on the roster right now.

MOD NOTE: The discussion of Luka Doncic has, as one astute member predicted, been moved to the Luka Doncic thread. The Doncic contingency is going to have to continue their defense of their hero there...not here.

I agree he looked a little hesitant to go after it in the air. He wasn't necessarily attacking the rim on his drives, which is understandable with his history.

It is concerning, but as he gets comfortable his fire should.let him play more freely. I don't see a WCS situation where he avoids certain plays because he's afraid of hurting his hand.

Can people finally calm down on the Giles hype? CWebb 2.0? More athletic version than Draymond?
Those were such false comparisons because he plays nothing like either player. His ball handling looks pretty bad. His passing looks underwhelming. His rebounding is very bad. I get hyping up a teammate, but he looks nothing as advertised aside from his motor and athleticism.

I find it weird that he's such a poor pee rebounder because I thought that was a solid trait of his. He doesn't know how to box out. He just likes to watch the ball fall off the rim... reminds me of WCS.

What's up with the Kings and loving bigs who can't rebound? Bagley looks average at best.

WITH ALL OF THIS SAID, I like Giles. I think he'll be in competition for 20mpg. 10-8-1 would be a very good rookie year for me. However I'm just not seeing franchise savior as many have already put on him.

Nobody should’ve put that on him. I said from the start it would be great if he could be a solid starter

He's not comfortable or confident yet. And why would he be? You are being too harsh. What I want to see from HG over these summer league games is more athletic bursts. More explosiveness. Does he have it or not? I need to see more before I grant to him the starting role next year. He's a pretty good player fundamentally but what about the quick jumps, the second effort, the shot blocking presence? I want to see relentless effort that he talks about in interviews. I don't care about his shooting percentage as long as he is getting quality looks. But HG has two games and NO dunks. Dunk that ball HG! It hurt the team last night that Fox was out. Mason played okay but did not get easy looks for our bigs. Giles needs a monster dunk to feel good about himself. This is what I want to see tomorrow.

This. Nobody can wave a magic wand and get rid of hyperbole. People anointing him the second coming of C-Webb speaks to how desperate we are for something good here in Sacramento.
People? Those were the players like Peja and Bogdan saying that. Hard to tell in the jungle ball that was the Kings offense last night. Your skills as an intelligent player and passer are lost when people are running randomly around the court.

Giles defensive capability looks very good. His offensive finesse needs to catch up to it. It's a process...:)
I'm as much of a Giles fan as anybody, but after watching him last night, I feel a little skeptical and also worried about the overhype. The good first: he looks to pass and set up teammates and move the ball. He made a couple nifty passes. His shot didn't look great, but his mechanics weren't bad. The concern: he didn't look that explosive at all, and he had opportunities to show it. There are times he could have run down guards that were moving to the hoop, and attempt blocks, but chose not to. maybe he's just being cautious, but when everyone else in summer league seems to be playing balls out, he seemed a few times to be content to stay ground-bound. He's a gritty one-on-one defender, which is nice to see, but wasn't necessarily effective against Jordan Bell and others. I understand it's just one night, but I walked away from the evening pretty unimpressed. I hope to see something different in his next outing

did you notice like during layup drills the trainers were working with Harry on body mechanics like jumping and keeping his legs straight and stuff. I just think he has to shake off a lot of rust and will have to live through a sprained ankle or two before he really starts to not fear for his health a little bit. I think it will be a process and this year will be hit and miss a bit. But if he starts to trust his body completely then look out. He's a beast I think. I just imagine how I would feel if both of my knees had failed me before I even reached legal drinking age.

I can imagine the coaching staff telling Harry, don't kill yourself in summer league competition trying to push your body to the limits. Instead, try to get a feel for the competitive game again, and work up slowly from there. That would explain his tentativeness

he did mention after game 1 that he was thankful to "walk away from the court healthy" or something to that effect, so yes, he has some fear of getting hurt that he needs to shake off. agreed, we have not seen his full physical prowess yet..

As others have said, I think we have yet to see the true HG. He looked like BMac out there handling the ball for gosh sake. He didn't really get after rebounds, he didn't power to the rim, he didn't do anything he was hyped up to do. I have to imagine he simply was thinking instead of doing. This will change after a few more games. One power dunk, one rebound ripped out of the hands of another or a chase down block and he will believe again.

And it should be noted however timid he may look on offense, on defense he has looked downright studly at times.

Both Giles and Bagley need to be in Zbo’s back pocket and learn how he uses his body and space in the paint to score. Neither one has that part of the game...Bagley is trying to just out jump or go fast trying to score in the paint. Stuff that’s worked at Duke won’t work here on a consistent basis. They just need to go to school with Zbo.....hurry up and slow down.
