Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Boxscore

Nocioni ( B ) -- slow start as the entire team got off the line sluggishly, but after being reinserted later in the quarter quickly knocked down a short jumper and then charged in and drew a +1. We got good performances from virtually the entire bench which limited Noc's first half minutes. Started off the third with a good bat back to save an offensive possesson and then canned the three when the ball was kicked bakc out to him. Hit a second three a few minutes later as we began to open this one up, but then picked up his 4th foul, left the game, and never had to return as we blew it open. This sort of thing is hard to grade because it was such a short night for Noc (17min) but in those 17minutes he put up 14pts on 5-7 shooting. Best he's looked in some time, and even accounting for lack of serious opposition that's still worth something gradewise.

Thompson ( A- ) -- in the early going got off to the poor start as he and Spencer got pummeled by Love and Jefferson inside in the opening minutes. Spencer was quickly gone with foul trouble, but Jason hung in there and as the Wolves went to big but not terribly talented Nathan Jawai off the bench JT started gaining traction. Funny thing is you see the big numbers in the boxscore, but that "-" is next to the A because it really was never THAT impressive a performance. Strong no doubt, but JT never really dominated this one. Rarely really squared his man up and took him to the hoop or ran off a string of boards on both ends. What he did do was one of his best and most efficent jobs of playing garbageman out there for us. Again and again he grabbed o-boards off of other peole's misses and laid them in (and even hit almost all the layups). Again and again he moved toward the hoop and took a pass from Reke, or Hawes, or Beno or whoever and went in nearly uncontested for the assisted finish. Was still missing his FTs left and right, but otherwise showed just how efficient he could be if he just had any touch around the rim, finishing 11-17. There were a handful of spectacular plays along the way including a good hustle block getting back to defend on the break against a little Pavlovic jumper. But not enough, and not enoguh of an opponent, to bounce this to the straight A.

Hawes ( C ) -- good pass to start the game to Reke on the cut, but then got faked out by Jefferson on the other end for the dunk, and Big Al spent the next few minutes just pummeling Spencer like an over the hill palooka and chasing him from the game with 2 merciful fouls. Spencer was reinserted in the second and lasted all of 23 more seconds before he picked up his third getting overpowered by Jawai and had to leave once more. Came back out after half with much more energy and saved his grade here while helping in a lot of little ways. Made a steal, had a dunk on the break courtesy of Reke, made several good passes. Played deep into garbagetime, I guess to make up for his lack of early minutes. Gained the partial redemption, and the partial redemption grade, but could go no higher given that he finished with 8pts 5rebs and his opponent finished with 26 and 11 and got to sepnd most of hsi night beating up on other smaller Kings because Spencer could not handle him. Spencer, 2 words: weight room!

Greene ( C ) -- this was...a mess. But not a complete loss. Was wild from the start however, and it was sloppy enough you have to worry a little bit about regression. It was also full of hustle and energy however, and when you get a 6'11" athlete who's willing to leave it out on the floor you'll take occasional bits of wildness. Hustled hard in the third and was part of the big energy push, but shot poorly on the night, and the shot selection was let's say, questionable. That much improved three point shot looked like it did last year, and he had a handful of drives that were equal parts aggressive and just insanely wild. On one of them he went up and looked like he was going to try to tear the rim off the backboard, through two TWolves. Had no chance of course, but that's ok, we've needed some of that spirit in these parts for the longest time. So go ahead Donte, tear that rim down, and if somebody tries to block the shot tear his bleeping arm off and dunk it too. Do that an I'll give you an A even if you do shoot 2-11 on the night. Until then you'll have to settle for a higher grade than your numbers suggest just for the spirit behind them.

Evans ( B ) -- This was an interesting grade -- the numbers were right there at just slightly off the kid's normal game: 18pts 5rebs 5ast 2stls. But the devil was in the details. Did something I normally grade down for, as he dominated the first quarter, just steamrollling a helplessly undersized Johnny Flynn, and then largely just settled back and coasted on home. But on a night where we dominated and essentially had the game over by the end of the third a first quarter dominant game isn't the wart it is when you are needed late and just don't show. And on top of that he proved the point that needed to be proved right there in the first -- that our decision to draft Tyreke rather than Flynn (who is better than he looked tonight) or He Who Shall Not Be Named was a franchise turner. Just like that, we have turned the corner, while the Wolves still wallow and wait for a shot at John Wall.
Reke's first couple of layups were actually off assists by Hawes and Thomas -- a rarity for a kid who normally creates for himself and for whom we don't run many cut to the hoop plays. Also threw in a big smack block on Flynn early as he bullyballed a guy who has maybe been the #3 rook on both ends of the court. Really began to click into gear again as the quarter went along, getting to the hoop, kicking passes out, posting Flynn at will where the smaller guard could not handle the physicality. Was up on his toes defensively up top, on one play playing a one man trap on defense racing around to almost pick three different Wolves. After a 14pt first quarter, not surprisingly drew a lot of attention in the second and slowed. Was doing an excellent job of finding open spot up guys around the perimeter though, and while this may be a cliche, I counted at least 6 blown assists tonight on wide open shots 2s and 3s that just were not converted. It was a better passing game than the 5 assists would indicate. But while the defense was locked into him again (and gee its nice to have that defense bender again -- the guy other teams fear so much it changes their whole scheme) part of it too was less savory -- our other PGs, who were extremely effective BTW, were playing a bit of keepaway too.
Its been something I have noticed all season. For all his size and skill Reke is NOT a shooting guard, as Memphis found out last year. When the ball is not in his hands he really doesn't know what to do with himself, and when the other points have the ball we run few plays for him. End result is often that when he does get the ball in those pairings he's impatient to do something and has a tendency to force the action. And hey, did not matter tonight and everyone played well. But its a distinct syndrome that will need to be addressed eventually. Finally got his only hoop of the second running the final play of the half correctly -- a real relief there after we have blown so many of those opportunities this year. Brouhgt the ball down and intiated his drive at 5 seconds, not 7, not 12. That was right -- enough time to score + maybe get an o-reb, not enough for the opponent to get it back and score the other way. Got fouled on the drive -- Minny had one to give -- and then with 3 seconds to go just took the give and go from JT and blew past his man slashing to the hoop for the closing layup at the buzzer. Perfect execution. Finally.
Started off the third with a double dribble -- not the way you want to start things. And was again forcing shots with the other points handling. Was a factor with his all around skills, but offensively only had 4pts after the first quarter pummeling he laid on Flynn. Left in the late third adn I thought that was going to be it, but returend for a short and not terribly effective 4 minute stint in garbagetime. So, for average Reke numbers, better passing than the numbers show, and for pummeling another of the rookie PG pretenders I bumped him half a grade here. Ironically for an opposing team with a GM who went PG nuts over the offseason, we appeared to have the three best ones on the court tonight.

Bench

Thomas ( B ) in quickly with Hawes ineffective on defense and in foul trouble, and while he was quickly boarded over and could not really stop Jefferson inside, he made a variety of contributions to help us stop the frontcourt bleeding. Picked up 2 quick assists, came up with a nice surprise block on Sessions in the second...which oddly was not credited in the boxscore? What, did they call it a steal? Also entertained with one of the worst attempts at a throwahead pass on the break you are going to see in the NBA. Tried to outlet it to Evans...in theory at least. In practice he missed by 10 feet (difficult when you are maybe only 40 feet away) and threw it right to the Wolves. Got us through the first half, and then Westphal again showed that it really isn't that hard to make good coaching decisions and gave the second half garbagetime minutes to the kids who could still learn from them rather than to Kenny, who's job was done early.

Casspi ( B+ ) -- came in with major pop early. Hit a three, missed the next off of Tyreke kicks. Came up with a nifty nifty spinning driving layup at the end of the first. Was really feeling it and starting throwing up some pretty wild shots, spin moves, post most, whatever and it all went. Exploded for 10 quick points and added a nice assist to Beno. Blew a Donte assist by clunking a fastbreak layup attempt off the bottom of the rim, but then came back to hit the next one a second later after Jason grabbed the miss and kicked it back to him. Cooled way down after the hot start, missed a series of threes in the third, blowing a bunch of assists for Reke in the process. Another one of these half game type grades, but again, 14pts 6rebs in 20min is pretty darn good.

Udrih ( B+ ) -- actually got off to a slow start in this one before coming on as a major factor as we blew the game open in the late third. Missed his first couple of shots in the second and despte a few scattered hits was never in much of a good scoring rhyyhm. Did close the half nicely with a pass ahead on the break to Reke for the dunk. After coming in in the mid third immediately splashed in a three and was off to the offensive races, pouring in 8-10 points in the last 5-6 minutes of the third as he and Sergio torched the Wolves. As Sergio cooled with the passing, Beno ran the team well in the early 4th, racking up assists and making sure there was no comeback life left in the hapless opponent.

Brockman ( B ) -- in to fight Love in the early going, but wasn't ready to guard him all the way out to the 3pt line as the big lug ran out there to splash in a three on us. Helped us finally get control of the glass after the early pummelage. Started racking up fouls trying to cut off Flynn penetration. The recipient of many a Sergio assist for layups as Spanish Choclate was on full display helping make even our nonscoring backup bigs into offensive weapons. Was of course part of the garbagetime crew that finished the game, but most of his numbers came earlier, and was also part of the lineup in the late third that put this one out of reach.

Rodriguez ( A- ) -- came in off his bench with his normal change of pace passing push, but what was remarkable this time is he did not slow down until the game was effectively out of reach. In his first 9 minutes of action in this one racked up an assist a minute, and his passing was making scorers even out of nonscorers like Brockman and KT. Added to the positive impression by really putting some defensive pressure on Ramon Sessions as well. Nifty nifty playmaking in the third including a no looker to Hawes that is sure to be on the ESPN highlights. Began to turn to it over in the 4th to lose a little of the luster on his grade here -- at one point there turned it over 3 times in the space of about a minute and a half. But it was already a 20pt game by that point, and they did not really hurt us, so thought the remarkable early assist work while the game was on deserved an A grade of some sort even if he did lose concentration in the garbage minutes.

May ( INC ) -- came in for garbagetime and hit a couple of long jumpers but not much else. Thank god our team has kind of moved on from that sort of stuff.

Udoka ( INC ) -- just the final 4 minutes of garbagetime. Grabbed a couple of boards, made ajumper at the very end fo the game, but still can't hit that three which was supposed to be one of this selling points as a player.

Notes: the early pummeling inside by the Twolves bigs looked like it was by design -- I think word is getting out we are soft in there. Early on this was classic moveable object vs. resistable force stuff as our bad defense and the Wolves even worse offense battled it out for supremacy. Fatigue may have finally decided that one as the Wolves jsut seemed to run out of fight and steam in the third -- a syndrome we can remember all too well form just last year. Ya think Wolves fans weren't thinking about what might have been if we had just taken Flynn instead of Evans? Of course they still had a shot at Jennings too. I love Katie and continue to think she is being wasted in this sideline reporter + extras gig, but they might want to consider having her sit down when she is doing some of those interviews. Seeing her next to members fo the dance team made her look like a giantess just towering over them. We broke this one open on pure scrap, as we just scrapped and clawed and outworked the Wolves during the key stretch of the third where we turned a 2pt lead into a double digit lead and broke their spirirt.

I don't like to see small ball too much but I have to say that in certain matchups it has worked well for us. It's different than what the Warriors run with 3 or 4 small guards playing at once in the sense that when we go with Beno, Sergio, and Tyreke they all can pass and Tyreke and Beno both have good size. I like the ball movement especially when Sergio is out there. Beno plays well as a 2 anyway. All around good game by everyone tonight.

Tought to pick one out of that group. JT had a double/double. Sergio had 9 assists! Lots of opportunities to do well against a poor team.

Sergio was very nice, Beno was better. Looks at the stats. Both played about the same minutes and Beno had 7 assists to Sergio's 9 - but Udrih outscored him by a wide margin. In fact, Beno gave the Rodriguez a nice pass for one of his two buckets or maybe it was on both. If I could vote in order on the poll it would be:

1) JT (w/o his excellent production on both ends we might have been in a dogfight at the end instead of winning going away;
2) Beno (solid again, like a broken record entire season so far);
3)Tyreke (got Kings off to a good start, ran over Flynn, and stayed on attack throughout);
4) Casspi (this intense rook never ceases to amaze me and ready to permanently replace Noc who I like too as solid vet);
5)Sergio (like I said, very nice but no #1 cigar).

I voted Jason but had Sergio a close 2nd. A blowout is a blowout no matter the team. The 33 assists is the fab stat of the night. Everyone played great or really good. Hawes continues to worry me tho' defending down low (rather the lack of defending down low). Too many times he seems to be watching the other guys go by on way to a lay up. Yet he still gets the reaching type of foul and Coach sits his but. Tonight went back in, got a quick foul and was back on the bench. :confused: :confused:

Beno and Sergio continue to impress. So does Omri. Greene is still up and down but at least now you can see the upside.

The next 3 road games are very winnable. Let's see if they can followup what they practiced and learned tonight. ;)

Defense needs work, no one knows where to rotate from and to, lots of confusion, lack of communication, also looks like lack of watching film/reading scouting report

Great team win. They took care of business and beat a team that they are better than. Now if they could just start holding opponents to under 100 points...

they handled their business tonight, it was the twolves but still... its nice to know that we can expect this team to win certain games, it feels good to have that feeling again. thats the first step to becoming a contending team.

beno has played really well but i still want him to be traded.

thompson had a good game, hawes and nocioni didnt suck, they werent great b ut they didnt hurt us which is nice. tyreke played a good game, didnt try to do too much. sergio played well until the end... with the turnovers and the missed three pointers if he had made atleast one he wouldve had a much better overall looking game. he only took 5 shots and missed 2 threes. had he made one he wouldve been 8pts/9ast off the bench... damn... greene is still hella suspect, if thompson and hawes werent just as up and down i would think that greene was a bust. he's not alone with his inconsistency and he does have big games from time to time so he's still worth waiting for.

JT was very good tonight. Beno was red hot. I already said I like Sergio very much, he just makes everyone look better. The good minutes came when there was another ball handler (or even 2) near Reke. Quiet night for the last one. Had a few spectacular moves, but generally was a little off. Noc and Hawes were OK.

I don't get how is that KT is not on the voting list? His entrance in the 1st really has changed the game. A few nice moves for Omri. Ditto for Donte.

Interesting. Some folks in Israel didn't believe Omri would be that good, but in general agreed, Casspi will see some minutes - mainly late down the 4th quarter. Why? Well, Kings were supposed to lose a lot of games, you know ;). And so, in many games the 4th was supposed to be garbage time mostly. But tonight I saw an interesting thing. Omri, along with Reke, and some others didn't play much in the 4th, because... it was a garbage time! :D Kings certainly is the surprise of the season so far. Keep it up!

Omri left Israel as he's young and I think we didn't see enough of what he's got, other problem is the foreign player in Israel and the euroleague, in Europe you can play with 5 foreign players on the floor at the same time, and the franchises pays the foreign players way more than the natives, casspi was a soldier while he played so he had restricted salary in Maccabi (because of certain rules) so when you have a 2 million guy against 50 thousand guy (or less, I don't really know) it'll be quite obvious who will play more, it's a psychological thing and the owners also don't want to be looked like they spand money on foriegn players that will seat on the bench.
and with all of those issues, Omri was on the starting five in maccabi last year, in euroleague he was mostly a slasher and people thought it'll be hard for him playing in the NBA against athletic players with his game of penetration, he didn't shot a lot of three's so Israelis are surprise to see he's playing in a different way..

One theory about shooting 3s: bigger playing ground in NBA, and the fact that the 3-point line is more distant from the line of defenders, actually give advantage to the shooter. Most of the 3-pointers in NBA are unguarded. While even though in Europe the line is closer to the basket, but most of the time the defense is much tighter.

It's funny. I thought this was Evans best game of the year and he has 0 votes for player of the game. He had very few forces and was moving the ball and not dominating it. The offense was getting the open looks for shooting.

Casspi is really starting to impress me. I've been waiting for a cold spell in his shooting, but he's been rock solid. Also, he's calmed down a bit and is playing much more under control, and is showing something new almost every game. He's tough under pressure and has a surprisingly high basketball IQ for a rookie, is and continually improving his game. On top of all that, he brings a lot of passion and excitement to the game. Now if he can only hit his free throws...

Almost unanimous player of the game gets a third ammount of space comparing to Reke in Bricks grading bonanza!?

This thing went far beyond simple man crush. It is borderline obsession now. :p

Probably because he was playing pro ball across the pond before we drafted him. ;)

I dont understand this at all. When we are totally healthy, Beno is perfect to come off the bench. He is not a cap killer, he is playing well enough that he deserves the money he is getting, and we need someone like him off the bench. Remember the days of the "Bench Mob?" We have another Bench Mob that will outplay the opponent on most nights.

Caspi, Sergio, Beno, Donte, Thomas, Brockman..... I like it.

And Caspi is WAY more than I expected. he does not just sit out and shoot threes. He takes it to the hoop. That spin move was awesome.

Dont has a great post game, but the last 2 nights he starts with a few great post moves, little spin and baby hook, then he goes outside and just sits there. When he gets the ball he is just settling for threes again. The very thing we hated about Donte last year. One of the coaches needs to get in his head so he isnt JUST shooting threes.

In Coach Westphal's post game comments he compared watching game films of games won or lost. He finds that there are as many teaching moments in wins as there is in losses. I think Coach and all the assistants are doing a great job.

All the players had their ups and downs. JT, Beno and Spanish Chocolate played really well. Kenny and Jon kicked some A@# defending and rebounding. Jon really gets his moneys worth when he fouls, I like that about him:D

It was priceless watching Rambis and Theus sit while the T-Pups were slaughtered. They are not that good. Then add in a 4 game in 5 nights schedule starting in Toronto and finishing with the Lakers and Kings in California. The Wolves will be ready when the Kings visit their house. The Kings better lace em up tight that night:)

The biggest impact player of the game was Tyreke, after he bowled them over in the first quarter their whole gameplan changed. So it's only fair that the reason why they changed their gameplan and ended up scrapping (and getting ran) should get a good write up.

Sorry, we know you want a 2 page write up on Beno but Beno did what he was supposed to, for the most part. Still was almost played to a draw by Sessions but he had really good contributions in his stint.

Not sure I grok how sixty-six percent of the vote is "almost unanimous." :confused:

Math isn't my best subject, but I'm pretty sure that two-thirds of the vote is only "almost unanimous" when there are only three people voting.

Me too.

I think Beno played really well offensively since the start of the season. But the fact that he is still a liability in defense makes me lean towards wanting to trade him. I think it is only now that prayers of last year asking the Gods making another team to take Beno via trade are beginning to be heard. I hope I am right. I hope the FO shop him NOW on the trading block before he reverts back to his old inconsistent self.
