We're really only over because of Rudy Gay. And that contract comes off the cap in a year. In retrospect, I'm not sure I like the move since it gave us Rudy/IT iso ball before we got a chance to see if Williams was going to work out as a starter, but it did rid us of Salmons and it did shake things up for a while and make this season interesting. The real test of PDA's salary management skills will be seeing what kind of decisions he makes on IT and Rudy (if he opts out) in a couple months. We did commit a lot of salary and 4 years to a somewhat redundant player last season. The worst thing Petrie did in his tenure was continually dole out mid-level contracts for marginal talent year after year rather than letting empty cap space accrue and then looking for a big purchase to use it on. Hopefully that Landry deal was a stop-gap move rather than a sign of things to come.

With the new CBA I didn't think you could "acrue" empty cap space. I was under the impression that the space between minimum salary and the salary cap was getting smaller. Is it 85% now or an even higher percentage? Teams are going to have to be creative to get salary to drop off the same off-season and hopefully not the same off-season numerous other teams are doing the same.

95%, but lately a lot of quality guys are not finding the market, they hoped for, and settle for shorter contracts, if teams are willing add some money per year, so you fill your space with 1-2 year contracts and have pseudo cap space. Thing is even if you don't get to 95%, the money up to 95% mark are shared among your players, according to their part of team salary: player, who makes twice as much, get two time bigger cut of the money.

OK, the last number I remember was when it went to 85% but thought it was going higher. Ninety-five percent doesn't leave much wiggle room, although they do have until the end of the season to get there. Filling the space with short term contracts was part of what I was meaning when I mentioned the need to be creative.
