Don't Make Me Use The Bat
boogie_monster.jpg

One last time, because if that crap ref isn't overruled, this was the last time we get to see Boogie this season. Hell of a season big guy, no matter what they say.

Ok, for those who did not get to watch...another one of our entertaining and eventful late season games. This featuring:

-- the return of Isaiah Thomas, magically

-- Boogie going off in huge and impressive 35pts 15reb 6ast fashion, and getting in a shootout with Kevin Love who only dropped 43-11 the other way.

-- both our rookies stepping forward late in the game as Boogie's primary help (as well as the primary beneficiaries of his excellent passes to beat doubles and, ahem, lead the break as a 6'11" PG

-- and then for the sucky capper, with 1:13 seconds to go, following a wild scrum under the hoop involving 5 players, and ending with a foul against OUtlaw, Boogie is slow to get up, goes to his position alongside the free throw lane, and waves his hand in disgust. Tweet! Technical foul of the most unnecessary fashion. Not unnecessary for Boogie to get. unnecessary for that ****ing ref to call. In that situation? Not only could he have given the game to the Wolves for a nothing, but in the process he blew Cousins for his first technical foul in two months, which, if it strands, and we WILL be challenging it, would mean automatic suspension for Cuz for his 16th of the year. And no Cuz in the final game of the season. Also one last little excuse to deny him as too immature yadda yadda to deserve post season honors. We'll see. But that ref wouldn't want to run into me in the airport right now.

Williams ( B- ) -- So it was time to play the Timberwolves and therefore time for Williams to get aggressive and attack his old team. There wasn’t any single stretch where Williams looked great in this one, but he played a lot of minutes with Rudy being out, and he spent the majority of them picking his moments to cut hard to the rim. And his teammates kept their heads up and found him a number of times, giving him a chance to score close to the bucket. He didn’t finish a whole lot of his shots, but he went to the line more than any other King except Cousins, which is a testament to his aggressiveness. He took a couple of jumpers, and didn’t hit many of them, but he did hit the most important one which was set up by Cousins who took it down the court and found him open during the big run in the 3rd that the Kings put together to get back into the game. His rebounding was pretty poor with only 4 rebounds in his 40 minutes, but it is slightly mitigated due to the fact that he was guarding Brewer almost the entire time and Brewer spent most of his time running down the court whenever he could which pulled Williams away from any offensive rebounding opportunities. Brewer finished up with 0 rebounds which should indicate how far away he was from the ball for boarding opportunities, which did impact Williams’ rebounding as well. On defense he stayed with Brewer pretty well and Brewer obliged by poor shooting through-out the night. He did let Brewer get the angle to the basket a couple of times though. So not the sort of dynamic powerful game that we’ve seen him put up against his former team, but still a better game than we’ve seen of him lately. --Uncia

Thompson ( B- ) -- now you never know who is going to be "hurt" next for us, and Reggie Evans grabbed 14 and 14 the night before and looked pretty damn fine. But even if healthy, a smart coach might have started Jason Thompson in this one because JT has done a real nice job on KLove this year. And for most of this one that was kinda true again. I say kinda only because there were relatively few plays where he came out and just smothered him, but his mere presence seemed to throw Love off. We even started the game trying to go at Love with JT on offense, but resuls were mixed and we soon found a far more prolific big guy to feed. JT would finish the game with only 6 points. But he was hustling and scrapping and very strong on the boards in the first half, grabbing 9 before the break and basically dominating Kevin Love on the glass while holding him to something like 5-13 shooting. Can't complain too much about that. But things fell off after half as Jason quit boarding, got into foul trouble that took him out until the late game, and when he came back after a good initial follow tip, not only did he not get the Love monster that the Acy/Outlaw "PF" combo had created back under control, he seemed unfocused "dumb JT" again, and committed two bad offensive fouls that hurt our late game chances and fouled him right out of the game in about 3min. So it was a tale of two halves here, and its too bad we could not have had first half JT in both halves or we might have won this one going away. The change was distinct when he went off the floor, and all of a sudden Love felt perfectly comfortable attacking the tweeners who took JT's place inside. --Brick

Cousins ( A ) -- It's fairly rare that one play can overshadow an entire game's worth of work, but that was definitely the case with Cousins tonight. In the late fourth quarter, with the game hotly contested, Cousins got into a scrum on the floor for a loose ball. The Wolves ended up winning the scrum and Outlaw was called for a foul. Cousins, apparently upset about the physicality of the scrum stood up, waved him arm a tiny bit in what could be interpreted as the direction of one of the officials, and said the cowpatty word, to get immediately T'ed up. Cousins had previously been stuck on 15 Ts for well over a month, and had vowed to his team that he wouldn't receive the next technical - the one that would make him miss a game by league rule. Well, he didn't do much, but he did enough, and now his availability in our final game against Phoenix is in serious question. As a matter of course the Kings will be sending the tech footage to the league office and arguing that the T be rescinded, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about it. One the bright side, despite the fact that he was visibly distraught, Big Cuz pulled it together, and with the Kings only up two he dropped a ridiculous baseline drive on the Wolves that he finished with a dunk with 24.2 seconds left - putting the Kings up four and basically sealing the game. It was a moment where after making a bad mistake he manned up and put the team on his back and brought us to a win, and despite the fact that we'll likely lose him for Wednesday, it was very good to see. Outside of that, ho-hum, just a another 35/15 game from the best center in the league. He wasn't perfect - he had trouble containing Gorgui Dieng (Gorgui Dieng?!?) in the first half, his six turnovers (four off bad passes) were ugly and he relied a bit too heavily on his jumper considering that the Wolves had no answer for him in the paint, but overall he was fantastic. He recorded three blocks (though one was clearly a goaltend) and six assists, five of those in the third when he went on a passing tear. Where would we be without him? --Capt.

McLemore ( A- ) -- hey hey! Ben finally won a matchup vs. Kevin Martin (who looked awful and scored 0pts in 18min before Adelman had seen enough). For Ben himself two things happened: first Big Cuz found him again and again as an outlet when Cuz was being doubled, and as the man standing open in the corner when Cuz was leading the break(!), and more critically than just being found, Ben hit a good percentage of those open kicks. Absolutely critical skill for anybody who's going to play that position across from Cuz. And then the other thing was sporadic aggression trying to score off the dribble or on the break. There were some misadventures there. Late in the first quarter got a favorable matchup against Hummel, tried to drive and threw a terrible crosscourt pass out of bounds to absolutely nobody. Then dropped too far off of Hummel and watched him drain a three on us the other way, a play that actualy caused Malone to call a timeout and bench him for Outlaw. But there were also some strong plays. Got one to go with a fugly +1 on the break through Kevin. Was right online with the halfcourt buzzer beater at halftime, but off the back rim. In the third while he was having problems with Mbah a Moute's strength, he got two threes on Cousins kicks, a hustle block back at the rim, and a legitimately nice power drive along the baseline (I say that because if you listen to Grant and Jerry everytime Ben dribbles twice in a row without it going off his shoelaces its a great drive, but this one truly was nice. Professional. Body and ball control and even used his body to shield the shot. best shot of the night for him). Rounded out his scoring when he was intentionally fouled with 12 seconds to go and rattled both of them in to put us up 4 and help us secure this one. So, this was a professional SG effort. it wasn't amazing by NBA standards, but it was certainly strong enough and professional enough by Ben standards to deserve a late season A of some sort I think (and hence forcing me to bump up the Cuz grade because let's not get confused here -- Ben owed Cuz half his paycheck tonight). --Brick

Thomas ( C ) -- suddenly, when it was safe to win, Isaiah was back. Odd. :) And for the first few minutes of this one it looked like he might celebrate his return with an explosive night against the anti-matter version of him in Rubio. First shot back was an awkward off balance hook...a 5'9" PG hook. And it went in. And in the next couple of minutes he followed it with two quick darts down the lane. But while he was back, we remained invested in McCallum too, and even with the quick start IT was out by mid quarter so Ray could get more time. When he returned it was to play alongside McCallum in the early second, in a lineup that initially did not work at all before half. Then had an odd reaction to Cousins' return in the mid 2nd as he immediately took the ball away and bam bam bam forced up three classic IT me shots ignoring the big guy, and bricked two of them and got the third blocked. meanwhile Barea was lighting it up the other way. Actually caused Malone to call a timeout to straighten things out. And from that point on, really the entire rest of the game, IT was largely a non-factor either way. Was not creating many shots, and he proved to be a less reliable kickout option for Cuz than either of the rookies, missed several open threes , and was forcing a bit in the third and having some fumbles. Its impossible to read too much into a PGs defense when they are playing Rubio as Rubio scored 0pts...but dished out 11 assists, which is more what he wants to do anyway. The second IT/Ray pairing worked better than it had before half, but Ray seemed to be the one thriving in it more than OT. Down the stretch finally hit abig three at the 4:30 mark, the only one he hit on the night. But followed it with a bad pass turnover at the 3:30 mark, and then he fouled Love on the elbow on a three point attempt at the 2:00 mark. Call it rust, but tonight It was only dynamic for the few opening minutes of the night, but still helped anyway by giving us an extra ballhandler and NBA level guard that we haven't had for weeks.--Brick

McCallum ( B ) -- played a lot at both guard spots tonight as we went to a straight 3-guard rotation. Was in the game quickly for IT, although not because IT was struggling. More for the rookie's head I think. And early on it waa a notable downgrade in punch as he wasn't creating much. Did get a block of a Rubio drive however. Added a drive late in the quarter where he took a hit on the head. Started the 2nd quarter at SG next to IT, but the lineup did not work and we fell behind. Involved in a play that made the highlights as he and DWill both tried to make the same cut, and Cuz threw it in there and they crashed into other cartoon style while the ball rolled out of bounds. Was actually quiet for most of the night. Able to get around Barea pretty easily, but not able to score much against Rubio's defense. Then the 4th came around and he came alive. notched back to back assists to Cuz early in the quarter, and suddenly bang bang hit an open corner three from IT in the quarter, and immediately drained a long one from the opposite angle next possession, and we suddenly had our separation, were up 6, and I don't think ever relinquished it. --Brick

Gray ( INC ) -- Gray came in to spell Cousins after he picked up two quick fouls late in the first. He only played 8 minutes, and he didn't have a big effect on the game, grabbing two rebounds, watching Dieng take two jumpers (a hit and a miss), and taking two shots - both ugly as sin. The first, an awkward half-floater just before the first quarter buzzer went in, though it's a true mystery how. Gray did a pretty poor job of helping in the paint, though I don't think that alone can explain his dismal -17 +/-, as the Wolves went on their biggest overall run of the game while he was on the floor. Anyway you look at it, the team was pretty lethargic with the Gray/Acy frontcourt, and it's no wonder we didn't go back to it. --Capt.

Acy ( D+ ) -- Acy was brought in to spell JT and pick up Love in the first quarter. Luckily for Acy, Love didn't attack him in the short run and was replaced by Daunte Cunningham for the remainder of Acy's stint. Acy, for his part, committed a goaltend and allowed Cunningham to net an and-1 on a drive after he left him on the perimeter. Acy's most important minutes came in the third, when he spent 6 minutes on Love and allowed 5 points on 3 shots, including once fouing him on a three. Not exactly the best outing. On the bright side, Acy hit both of his shots (one jumper and one post move), but he had a mostly invisible effort, and he didn't really hamper Love all that much. --Capt.

Outlaw ( B- ) -- The grade might look a little high when you see that Outlaw didn’t do what we normally expect Outlaw to do when he has a good game, and that is hit his shots. He was very poor, missing 6 of 7 shots. For some reason he got the call to guard Kevin Love when in the game, and given how bad a match-up that is for him he didn’t do all that poorly. But he was out there missing shots left and right and had pretty much done nothing of note until around the 7 minute mark of the 4th quarter. With the game really tight he turned into the anti-Outlaw and had 4 great minutes of wonderful, non-scoring basketball. He grabbed 4 defensive rebounds and had 3 assists. Two times he found open shooters (Ray the first time and IT the 2nd) and then capped it off with a wonderful outlet pass to Ray who dunked it with no Timberwolf in sight. Not great basketball through-out his minutes, but that was a very important 4 minute span because those defensive rebounds he grabbed to keep away from Love and those passes were for points that the Kings really needed. It would have been great if he’d been able to knock down the open 3pt shot from a Cousins double team with 1 minute left, but given that he wasn’t hitting his shots he came up pretty big in other areas to help the Kings pull out the win. --Uncia

If I could, I'd pay to fly you to wherever that official will be working next. I might even help pay your bail. :p

I word things very carefully on purpose. :p

Of course I merely meant would give him a piece of my mind and call him a meanie.

at LEAST if the tech holds, we won't be missing Boogie for next season's opener.

Really excited about the play of the McRookies. I feel like this is the type of game we want Ray McCallum playing; where he's not looking to create his own shot. Those 2 back to back spot-up 3s ended up being the difference in the game. Essentially, develop the spot-up 3, use his athleticism to get out in transition, create when needed/running point, and be the secondary ball-handler when playing with IT and/or Gay. He had a very "Mario Chalmers" sort of game tonight, something to be really excited about.

This was a good win for us, lottery position be damned. We lost an infinitesimal chance of both LA and Boston winning 2 games to tie with us and then winning the coin flip for the 5th spot. Instead we got Cousins putting the league on notice for MVP considerations next year, Ben McLemore finally looking like the possible rookie of the year candidate some hoped he would be, Ray McCallum further proving that as a starter or off the bench he's going to be a key player for us next year, Williams showing a little bit of confidence again to hopefully carry into a hugely important off-season for him, and a happy ending for another boisterous crowd of long-suffering Kings fans. Even Jason Thompson had a quality third big type of game before the usual fourth quarter jitters took over. The ridiculous technical foul cast a bit of a pall over the final result, but it shouldn't really. It was just a bit of an explanation point on how far DeMarcus Cousins has come this season. I'll take one borderline tech every 2 months from here on out from a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeves.

It's poetic really that this win came here, at Arco... err Sleep Train, against Minnesota with Rick Adelman, Ricky Rubio and Kevin Martin on the bench to witness it. (What, Martin and Rubio played 50 minutes you say? Could have fooled me. :) ) Minnesota is going to finish this season with a better record than us, but these teams are going in opposite directions. We lost Adelman years ago, Martin as the face of the franchise is a faded memory, and the myth of the "true PG" got demolished tonight by two second round picks. No disrespect to any of those guys, but I'm happy with the guys we've got right now. One more game to go and it's officially baseball season for me. Phoenix desperately needs a win to keep their playoff hopes alive and we may be playing without Cousins or Rudy Gay. Sounds like a perfect opportunity for all those so-called scrubs to show us something!

There has been about 6 T's on Cousins this year that nobody else in the league would have gotten. And if they had, they would have been rescinded. NONE of his have been rescinded, including the one where the ref told him at halftime that it was a bad call and he would rescind it.......

So i have no faith in this being rescinded :(

With that said, what a MONSTER game, and season, for Big Cuz. Best big man in the NBA, you can't convince me otherwise.

Nice to see McLemore turning a corner lately, and teammates looking for him (Especially Cuz and Ray)

I really do hope that Isaiah stays here in the offseason for like 6mil. But not as a starter, it is very evident how the team ball movement is much better when Ray is out there

The tech that Boogie got not only was unnecessary but may have gone a long way to support the idea that Boogie is being selected as a whipping boy. How long did that ref have to be eye balling Boogie to notice the hand wave? I've seen it in other games where the refs follow him long after it is reasonable to catch Boogie at something. I realize Boogie isn't going to be any NBA MVP nor does he deserve it but it would make me very happy if fans at the last game yelled "MVP" in Boogie's direction. Let him and the league know how much we appreciate him. If any guy has heart on this team it is Boogie. He is willing to put the team on his back and carry it as far as he can. The massive numbers he has been putting up recently are amazing.

I don't know if it's cause I'm really bias but Kevin Love's "monster game" honestly to me it seemed like he didn't have 1/2 the impact on the game Cousins had, maybe it's the way he got them I don't know what it is about KLove but numbers aside he does not impact the game like Cousins can when he's attacking the paint and causing havoc in the passing lanes.

#The Thomas/Ray combo looks fairly solid imo
#Mclemore has had the best 5 quarters (3rd from last game) off his career and looks like a guy who's skillset can really fit in if we can get a point forward.

It's really interesting to watch this team without Rudy. Individually he is very talented but the ball movement is much more fluid without him IMO and assist's go up.

Loved McLemore's game. The last two games have been very encouraging. His ballhandling, defense, and shot all look better. That block of 6'9" Corey Brewer's reverse layup was something else. Not too many NBA 2-guards could make that block. Too bad the season is coming to an end. He's just getting on a roll.

I also like having IT and McCallum on the floor at the same time. Two playmakers on the floor is what this team needs. It makes it very difficult for the opposing team to guard and also makes this offense less predictable.

I really didn't like the T either and I hope it gets overturned but the one thing that nobody is mentioning is that Cousins was saying something at the time that he waved his hand. We have no idea what he said but if it was vulgar enough that alone could have earned him the T.

I also have to believe that when the officials pregame, they talk about the specifics of the upcoming game. The crew chief would definitely make them all aware that DeMarcus would be suspended if he gets T'ed. That being said, I would hope that they would only T him if it was very obvious.

Also, for the record, I've seen a few situations during this T free streak where I've seen Cousins do some things that I thought could be a technical foul and I think in those couple of occasions the referees turned their back because they knew the ramifications. Don't get me wrong, these incidents weren't the prolific Boogie explosions of the past but they were very close to crossing the line.

It was easy enough to read his lips on the replay. He said, "Cow patties**, man!".

**Well, not exactly, but you get the picture.

i'd say that's because basketball is a two-way sport, and kevin love has historically minimal impact on the defensive end apart from his monstrous rebounding skill. demarcus cousins has long figured to be a kevin love-type of talent in that he's never projected out as a good defender, but he's proving to be much sturdier on that side of the ball than many had foreseen. big cuz still has work to do, but his impact on defense has certainly been felt this season, and i would expect to see continued improvement heading into next season. but a guy like kevin love is what he is, at this point in his career. he'll never be an impact player on defense, whereas cousins is a quick study, and is learning how to better position his body and move his feet on the defensive end...

I'm not a talented lip reader but that makes sense. If the referee reports to the league that he yelled that loud enough, along with the hand waive, I don't think it's getting rescinded.

I wish DMC could just stay out of situations like that. The foul wasn't even called on him.

No fouls were called during the scrum when lots of opportunities existed, but Outlaw got called right afterwards. I suspect DMC may have thought the call was on him - I know I did at first.

He didn't drop the F bomb. That's generally the cutoff point on "foul" language.

Whatever the cutoff is, I sure know it isn't the one that starts with an S. If it were, Rudy wouldn't make it two minutes past opening tip.
