Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Er...seems to be a rather opaque ceiling we keep bumping into. The great teams, or teams playing great, we have run into have put us in our place -- Chicago, Denverx2 (althoguh there we were competitive), Spurs. Everybody else we're beating or scaring, but the elite teams...well let's just call it a good lesson and get to the grades.
It belatedly occurred to me that:
a) this was a blowout
b) blowouts mean girls; and
c) that the SKDT is currently involved, and still alive in the annual dance team contest over at NBA.com.
So I'm gonna spiff up this thread some.
Offical Boxscore
Garcia ( C- ) -- quick layup off the opening jump ball, but then went back to missing long jumpers as he still isn't shooting worth a damn from outside, and worse yet, seemed to be looking to chuck shots rathee than move the ball and wait for open ones. Tried to belie that in the third when he knocked down two threes, but there were the only ones on the night, and there was no defense back the other way as we got run out of the building.
Arielle
Cousins ( B ) -- there are obviously still things to work out, including making sure he is not frozen out by an excessively guard-centric offense (remember again there has never been a successful team with 2 20ppg guards in the same backcourt). But in the last few games DeMarcus's raw totals have not gone up, but his efficiency has skyrocketed. The reason? He's not pressing as much. Drove by McDyess early, but then kind of faded into a support role for most of the first half. Was able to get his hands on a couple of blocks and had a big one handed tip follow late in the half as we surged to take the lead (yes, we played competitively for a half). But there were too many possessins when he did not even touch the ball, and when he did, he looked reluctant to attack even though he did not have to deal with Duncan this time (the advantage of having Daly out there with him). Took a couple of tough shots to start the third, but settled back and started knocking down his jumpers. Wrapped things wiht a 3pt play in the early 4th, but the game was already spiraling by then and there was nothing further. never felt like he had any great impact in this one, but 15pts 11rebs 3ast on 7-11 shooting with 0 TO is rock solid.
Brittney
Dalembert ( B- ) -- was having trouble finishing over the Spurs inside, even if they were guys he should have been able to take. but worked his way into a productive outing anyway, and was teaming with Cousins to dominate the offensive glass down the half. Most of our defensive woes started with our little people, who just did not get it done. But Daly wasn't able to have any significant effect as a shotblocker either as the Spurs did most of their damage from the perimeter and on the break. 12pts and 10rebs of solid play again as we got double doubles out of both our bigs. But like Cousisn never felt like he wa having a huge impact on the game.
Carly -- as a side note, dear photograpehr dude/dudette, go easy on the photoshopping/airbrushing of those bellies. They look almost painted. Think natural.
Thornton ( D ) -- still a bit of a question here how comfortable Marcus has been as "one of" the weapons rather than the only weapon. Shooting has all of a sudden gotten shaky, and in games like this he has been pressing. Was missing makeable shots in the early going, inside and out. Hit his only three of the ngith early. But generally held very much in check, challenged whenever he drove, and not doing the other things tonight. A couple of games ago he grabbed 7rebs and had 7ast. This time it was 1reb and 2ast and looked more selifhs and incomfrtable out there than we have seen him. No real burst of life either, as he was just silent as we got blown away, and finished with only 9pts on 11 shots.
