Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Very encouraging way to ring in the new year. (and geesh -- is it 2005 already??? I'm getting old).

Peja ( A+ ) -- wow -- exorcised his Bowen demons in a big big way tonight. Not only a huge scoring night against the toughest defense in the league, and the man who has tortured him over the years, but a great hustle game from him where you could actually see him hungry. Waded in and fought on the boards from the very start of the game. Got a lot of help from his teammates tonight with all sorts of screens, but Peja came locked and loaded this time. No weak sister tonight.
Webber ( B+ ) -- wow, how to grade this one. First the good -- Chris Webber played like a MAN in there tonight. Played some of the best post defense I have seen ANYBODY play against Tim Duncan, just totally frustrating him for long stretches. Led the teamwide focus on the boards from the start of the game. Lot of big tough rebounds in traffic. And just hustled his *** off all night long. Hungry performance, and came up big down the stretch with shots, free throws, assists. Now for the negative -- offense was pretty much just a long series of jumpers, perhaps necessary against the Spurs' length, but only sporadically effective. And man Webb was just sloppy with the ball -- seven turnovers in a big game. A few of them weren't his fault, but some of them were just really poor. Still, in the end while he had me slapping my head at times, when your power forward stands tall in there and faces down Tim Duncan, that's a heck of a night.
Miller ( B+ ) -- Numbers don't look that special, but really came to play with inspired play in the second half. Traded off with Webber on Duncan and did a respectable job with double help. Also grabbed some big burly boards for us, and gave us a real boost with an uncharacteristic string of blocked shots in the second half. Hit a big shot off a scramble play in the last couple of minutes.
Christie ( C+ ) -- started off the game aggressively, and was of course part of our excellent defensive effort tonight. But kind of settled back therafter, and was mostly just a spectator as the rest of the team kicked it into high gear. Wasn't even our best OG of the night.
Bibby ( B ) -- bit of an erratic effort with some bad turnovers scattered throughout. But really impressed with strong defensive focus from the start of the game -- see he CAN do it when he puts his mind to it. And in the 4th quarter, when it looked like we might be faltering after playing the great game, Mike stepped up and hit a number of big shots for us. Stepped up when it mattered most.
Ostertag ( B- ) -- Looking at the boxscore was a bit surprised at the stats, or lack thereof -- no rebounds, no blocks? Stood tall in there tonight as he is wont to do. Spurs were definitely aware of him, and he altered a number of shots. Of course the rarity was that tonight, he wasn't the only one doing that. All of our big men were locked in on defense.
Evans ( B ) -- gave us an energetic first half where he used his athleticism to battle on the boards. But lost his minutes tonight to Peja, who was great, and Martin, who was just as good. Helped us with a nifty pass in the first half when we were briefly in an unconventional non-passing lineup.
Songaila ( C ) -- our lone foil tonight. Hustled hard, but looked overmatched. Made Robert Horry look like a Hall of Famer in the first half, then switched over on Duncan. Which wasn't good. Thought Rick made a mistake leaving him in while taking Tag out in the second quarter.
Martin ( A+ ) -- if last game was Martin's coming out party, this was the one that just instantly cemented him into the rotation. I was impressed and surprised that Rick would even risk playing him in such a big game. But Kevin quickly eliminated any and all doubts that he belonged out there. Just a special performance by the kid -- absolutely did it all and made a couple of tremendous up out of your seat plays, including a coast to coast dunk to end the first half. Gave us excellent energy on the glass, and at times was running a bit of PG. Threw a nifty very Kingsesque behind the back, between the defender's legs pass to Darius in the second half. Fit right in.

Adelman ( A ) -- impressive display tonight. Team came out in playoff mode and was focused from the start for the game. Work on defense and the boards was great all night. Really surprised me by going deep into the bench for the second straight night. Had assumed he might shorten back up against the elite opponent. But he went to the bench, and remained committed to it throughout. Found Martin playing a great game, and rode him for long stretches even deep into the 4th quarter. Thought he made a little mistake favoring Darius over Tag, but other than that, made everything work. Even the worst passing Kings team I have seen on the floor in years -- Miller, Darius, Peja, Evans and Martin, bought us some minutes. Also perfectly timed his timeouts -- calling them just in time to break San Antonio momentum in the third and then critically, at the 4:30 minute mark to settle the team in a tie game as we headed into that stretch period where we've crumbled several times this year.

RA coached a heck of a game, tonight. Subs, timeouts, team was ready, team responded to Spurs runs, defensive rotations good....

what can i say, i stayed here just for the grades. great job as usual.

i just want to add that i thought coach adelman did a fine job tonight. the substitutions were good, and i'm so happy to see martin and evans in there. and this one time in the 2nd quarter i believe, the spurs took a 3 pt lead, and adelman called the timeout which made my eyes swell.

Great grades but I would give Webb some kind of A...What D! not to mention he was clutch! And Adelman deserves an A+, he made no mistakes at all tonight.

Hard to watch a guy hold TD to 6-17 shooting, tie him up, alter his shot and essentialy make him miserable for 35 min and NOT give him a full A even if that same player also had 7 TO's of his own.

i would have to agree. the turnovers from webb sucked, but everybody was turning the ball over. webb gets an A-, imo. he was great across the board. damn near a triple double, and blocked a few shots, stole a few passes, and forced a coupla jump balls, while at the same time frustrating the hell outta tim duncan, arguably the best PF in the nba. he played well, and played within himself. great job chris! great job overall kings!!!

Webber was there for interior defense tonight, it was a sight to behold with him and Brad, excellent effort and great intensity around the basket...defending Duncan and blocking shots, rousing for loose balls, it was all there tonight for the big guys. Even Tag got in there and did what he should, no big stats but PRESENCE. Same with Web, his game was to hold Duncan and he performed his function precisely. Actually, I would like to see him do exactly what he did tonight, every night.

If ever there was a defensive game for Kings to watch at least 5 times in the next 24 hours (what can I say? I'm a taskmaster), this would be it. Apart from the TO's, they stuck with their defensive approach nearly each and every trip, only saw one layup that was uncontested, just beautiful.

Oh, I forgot to say...Adelman was pretty much a genius tonight with his sub choices and timeout calls, I commend him for keeping his word to play bench. I too figured he would wimp out against the Spurs, I was pleasantly surprised!

yo for real! Must give the props to Rick tonight. He hasn't impressed with coaching (in the highest level), but tonight he made the right descisions for most of the night! Truly excellent sense in recognizing what was going on.

Pretty sloppy game by both teams.

Defensively the team was solid, which is weird. Why can't they keep this up consistently? Why not put more effort into the defensive end night in and night out?

Right now the Kings are weak on defense, until tonight. Again, whats the deal? Is it Webber's fatigue and injuries?

Peja was good tonight hitting his jumpers, Bibby made big plays down the stretch, and Webber had a solid all around game considering he guarded Duncan well.

Whoa. Way to find the dark lining of the silver cloud...

;)

Webber's fatique and injuries? Uh, what???

OH well... I am not going to let anything get in the way of my celebrating tonight's win. It was great..

Aside from the unforced turnovers this was a really fun game to be at. The game was always close and the crowd definitely brought its A game. San Antonio has a way of making teams miss even the easiest looking shots with their agressive defense. Team grade is definitely an A+!

What about the moans when Webber was about to shoot that jumper late in the game off a pass from Bibby? He was wide open, he made it and then gave a disgusted look to the crowd, and I don't blame him.

The moans came across very clear on the TV...

Webber should get a better grade, probably an A, that was a really well-balanced game from him. Just from what I have heard, didn't get to watch the game :(

I thought it was a good shot, but the only problem with it was I thought he shot it too quickly. I thought they would waste time and set up the offense. Dont you think so?

No. It wasn't a quick pull-up shot. Bibby read the defense, passed to Webber - who was open - and he took the shot. No reason not to...

I was asking kgrichwine if those moans were as clear in Arco as they were over the TV, since he made the comment about the crowd bringing its A game.

I think that Webber has been known to try and do too much all on his own at times and he did have a couple of inexcusable turnovers. I'm not sure what J your talking about though.

See post #185 in the PBP thread.

There was less than a minute left. The score was 80-78 and Bibby passed to Webber, who was open about two feet inside the arc. As soon as he lined up to take the jumper you could hear the moans. He made it - with nothing but net, BTW - and then turned and glared at some people in the crowd. Grant was upset, too...

Most of my favorite players are on the Spurs and Kings.

Webber's inconsistency on offense and defense can obviously be attributed to his health.

I don't see what "Webber's fatique and injuries? Uh, what???" means? Not trying to be a pest or disrespectful here, just asking.

All I am trying to point out is that Webber is not healthy enough to give a defense effort like he did against Duncan every night, and on offense he is obviously not the same player he was a few years ago.

I was asking a question as to why Webber can't play more D, and be a bit more efficient on O. The answer is clear, his health.

I want to see Webber succeed, but naturally I am going to attribute his struggles on D and on offense (in comparison to the prime Webb) to his health.

What is your question with that VF21?
