Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Artest ( A ) -- funny thing about this grade -- 3/4 of the way through this one Ron was really not having that great a game. He had had his moments, but they had largely been dependent on matchups. He had completely schooled Luis Scola, mostly drawn fouls against fellow stubby Chuck Hayes, and actually struggled to get much going against the former Bump to his Thump in Bonzi Wells who matched him muscle for muscle. So Ron was on his way to a productive night, but nothing more, as we were about to get put away. He had played a good defensive game against TMac, but he had also got caught on Yao picks up top a lot -- that's a lot of body to try to have to slide around a lot of body -- and really McGrady looked quite out of it no matter who was guarding him. But of course events of the 4th totally changed the story that would be told about this game. Ron completely carried us, along with Justin, down the stretch of this oen, and we were in Ron Artest heaven. No cute pretty little scoringfest was this. This was a grind it out walk it up slug it out possession war. And the Rockets did a lot to try to help Ron be a hero -- our defensive was cranked up, but they missed shot after after to keep us in it. And meanwhile you had Ron in full want to show off for Rick or play a good team or whatever it is that motivates him mode, and he was just attacking constantly. Went nuts down the stretch and was in taking all comers mode. Played some great defense on TMac as well, who pretty much looked like he was playign scared there by the end and almost refused to keep on shooting. Ron hurt his own cause though by choking two FTs with a couple of minutes left -- would have been enough to make the difference. And that along wiht the fact we came up short made the A without "+" here the right way to go I think. Huge quarter being unstoppable, and it was the right quarter, not a meaningless first quarter burst. But it was not enough, and he shot himself, and us, in the foot along the way. So "merely" and A. Hope the other teams around the league took notice.

Moore ( C ) -- dwarfed in there and too small to either stop Yao, or get around him to rebounds. Was losing minutes to Justin, who was easily the best of our bigs, before getting a late call to give Justin a breather befor ethe stretch run. Had a layup blocked by Battier late that really helped the Rockets cause (was that Mikki? -- stats are calling him 3-3 for the game).

Miller ( C- ) -- his counterpunch advantage against Yao was taken away by Rick puitting McGrady on him, and rather than rebound or defend he chose to pioneer the I'll cry to the refs every single time down the floor method of defense. May have worked too, because after the refs finally got sick of the contant whining and T'd him up, they quickly called Yao for a pair of fouls that took him out of the game. Struggled on through the second half. Every once in a while he'd hit a jumper, otherwise his contributions were limited. And yet coming out of the timeout for our last second shot, it was Brad Miller, our 7'0" center, having a crappy game, who was given the responsibility to hit the three pointer to win it for us. Thx Reg. Missed the shot not surprisingly. Of course it might have helped if he had just shot the damn ball rather than trying to jump into the guy and draw the foul. Drawing the foul has become a Kings sickness -- wonder how many shots we miss a game because we are so busy flopping around trying to trick the refs rather than just focusing on putting the ball in the hoop? And on the final play of the game too -- reminds me of Kevin trying to do the same thing earlier this year. The refs aren't going to call that. They shouldn't call that. And Brad took a low percentage situation and turned it into a nearly impossible only can hit the shot through blind luck situation.

Martin ( D ) -- well well, ain't this an interesting and alarming pattern. Sure enough F,A,F,A...well not quite F, but not good. And really if you get down to it, even in the two good games Kevin has had in the stretch, he basically had two good first halves, and then disappeared/or was benched by the end. So maybe 2 good halves in the last 10, and yes, this would be a slump. Perhaps a well timed All Star break here for Kevin. At least tonight you could say there was some excuse with a good defender in Battier keeping him from most of his freebies on off the ball movement, and a giant roadblock behind him to alter a lot of the stuff Kevin tried to do toward the hoop. Had a modestly effective first half and made some good passes to set up teammates early, but the numbers were a little funny -- it was not a good half or an impact half, and Kevin was struggling to finish inside, but he was still struggling along toward a 20pt night and maybe a high C type grade. Almost completely ineffective in the third however as the Rockets threatened to chase us out of the building (again), and Reggie again just made the move to go wtih Salmons (completely ineffective himself) for the entire 4th once again rather than worry about trying to drag Kevin out of his malaise. Again have to wonder how that is going over.

Bibby ( B- ) -- bit of a curious thing here -- Mike barely played half this game, and found himself benched for entire 4th quarter along with Kevin, and yet he really did not play that terrible a game. Nor that good of one -- no crocodile tears here. But he still finished as our second leading scorer despite not playing the entire final quarter, shot 50% on the night, and was about the only thing keeping it under 20 in the 2nd quarter, not that he really was going that good so much as just struggling along at least finding ways to score. The defense however could have used some improvement -- Rafer Alston dropped 23 on us, and it would have been more if he weren't such an atrocious shooter that I could probably take him in a game of H.O.R.S.E. In any case, Beno, who himself had pretty much sucked eggs int eh first half, came on to run the team in the late going, adn while he was nto great, we were scrapping back into it courtesy of Ron and Justin, and so Reggie just turned his back on Mike and went with the squad making it happen out there.

Salmons ( F ) -- check out this beauty of a statline for our 6th man: 21min 0pts (0-4Fg 0-3 3pt) 0rebs 0ast 0stl 0blk. Yummy! And just as yummy, for the second night in a row, F! John may have taken his occasional disappearing acts off the bench a little too literally this time. Other than some obscure nobody chucking up a bricked three every half quarter or so, he did not exist. And compelteled a lovely 2 game back to back patch of nonexistence to the combined tune of 43min 2pts (1-8FG) 3reb 2ast 1stl 0blk 3TO. And yet despite all of that this invisible man got to play the entire 4th quarter in place of the struggling KMart because the team aorund him was doing well and Reggie did not want to disrupt things. Note too, just as I pointed out his atrocious -28 +/- rating after the last game, this game was a perfect exaple of why game to game +/- can be very misleading -- in this one Mr. 0pt 0reb 0ast finished second on the entire team in +/- with +9. How? Spent most of the game coming in along wiht Justin, who was great, and the entire 4th quarter next to both Justin and Ron. Along for the ride, but got the +/- anyway.

Beno ( B- ) -- not effective off the bench in the first half, and continued the ineffective in off the bench in the third. But finally hit a shot in the early 4th, and was effective enough running the team, or more properly handing the ball to Ron and politely getting out of the way, that Reggie let him run the whole thing and benched Bibby for the entire stretch run. Did come back and give us a little help on the glass as in the 4th we turned what had been an embarrassing wipeout in that area.

Douby ( INC ) -- comes in, and a second later Rick Adelman subs in Bonzi Wells to go against him, Yikes. That was just mean. Predictably Bonzi instantly posted him and hit the cutter when we had to double. Quincy then came back the other way and nearly airballed a three. Was back for a brief cameo in at the end of the third and immediately found himself guarding and posted up by Shane Battier. Tough night to weigh as much as one of the Olsen twins.

Jones ( INC ) -- in for the last minute of first I think maybe as a response to the whole Bonzi posting up Quincy problem. Snuck in for another minute later, although I missed him agian. I swear this guy is like a stealth bomber now, sneaking into the game for 30 seconds here, 45 seconds there, because that's how players can really have an impact -- in 30 seconds bursts.

Williams ( A ) -- put in to begin the second quarter to get some energy on the glass, and did just that, making some big hustle rebounds. What is our freaking problem with this guy again?? On the other end in the early going proved just too small and inexperienced to deal with Yao though, who just walked him down inot the paint and scored over him at will. But then we brought him back for the 4th, and wow. Went right back to scrapping on every single board, but this time threw in somethign rather special -- so hyped up and bouncing aroudn full of energy was he that he was fronting Yao, jumping aorund him, getting hands on nearly every pass, and generally casing havoc inside on defense. Yao was I think literally the only rocket to do ANYTHING in the 4th quarter until Steve freakin' Novak stepped up to play hero, but it was hard scrappy work in there and the Rockets guards could not throw an entry pass to save their lives. And so given his first real opportunity of the season, Justin jumped up and grabbed it with both hands, 12rebs 5stls 1blk. Not perfect -- struggled to finish in there, after unexpectedly hitting a pair of FTs woke up and remmebered who he was in bricking the rest. But if anybody was sitting there going, gee, how can we play this guy with his lack of offense...they needed to be slapped. This is how you argue for PT. You say "Coach, you have been a friggin' idiot all year long preaching defense and reboudning and not playing me, your best interior defender and rebounder, now watch THIS." Now of course the dark side of all this would be that Reggie continues on with his only one big born after Star Wars can play a game theory, and so Justin played well and got the minutes, and Spenser was forgotten.

Reggie ( ) -- turns out we had the perfect match for the Rockets best two players all along -- Ron Artest and...Justin Williams.

I agree. I couldn't believe Theus didn't replace Salmons and Udrich with Martin and Bibby for the last half of the fourth quarter. I like Salmons, but you have to just watch him in that quarter. Didn't move much, came up the court slowly and didn't seem to focus on what was going on. Feel we would have won the game with the 2 for 2 switch. Annie.

It was dumb not having Martin or Bibby on the floor on that last play.

I think Reggie being consistant by sticking with the guys who worked their butts off to get them to that point was much more important than getting those two into the game for hopes of a miracle play.

Hopefully they will understand for the future that if they don't put the same effort as guys like Artest and Williams did in that 4th quarter, they won't see the floor in crunch time.

I think you're on to something. Last year Muss benched Martin for much of the second half (if memory serves) of one game. Martin was bent. Many fans were bent, especially because of the low credibility factor of Muss. But look at what's happened this year with Theus. Same story. Muss benched him because of bad D. I wonder if that is part of the Theus equation. In any case, Martin has shown this year that he is anything but consistent, and he certainly had lots of down time because of his injury; no excuse to be had because he's not fresh.

Bingo!!

I have no problem with what he did. The players that were on the floor brought them back in the game and he gave them a shot to finish it and they couldn't.... **** happens.....

I agree with everything that's been said about why Theus did it, although I think some sort of compromise in the final 5 seconds of the game should have been possible.

You're going to want to leave Brad and Ron in, because you have nobody better to substitute anyway. And Justin, because if a tip in is needed, he's your guy. Salmons and/or Udrih could have been swapped out for shooters.

But there'd only much point in hand wringing about it if the outcome of the game had mattered, and it didn't.
