Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Peja ( B ) -- on and off shooting night for Peja from the outside -- at times the stroke looked great, at other times he was still struggling. Pretty much playing like an uber-weenie around the hoop though. Initially had Melo under control, or perhaps rather just allowed Melo to throw up all sorts of low percentage junk. That changed as the game went along though, and Melo began to win the matchup. Pretty decent game overall, but his rebounding again earns him the Golden Girly Man award for this game.
Webber ( C ) -- another back to back, and the legs were gone again. Be something to watch for the rest of the year. One part of the game that was still there was his passing -- probably should have had at least 10 assists on the night, but King after King blew chippee layups off of great Webb passes. Game was kind of reminiscient of a Vlade game from last year. His rebounding numbers are a little deceptive -- for the first three quarters at least he was frequently standing there dead-legged as Nuggets swooped in around and over him for boards. Got stronger as the game went on though, and played a strong 4th quarter to raise his grade here significantly.
Miller ( A ) -- ridiculous shooting -- hit almost everything he shot, including two three pointers. And really came on in the third quarter by drawing fouls and making a series of smart passes. Not brilliant thread-the-needle-passes, but smart, run-the-offense-and-hit-the-right-guy-at-the-right-time passes. Frontline is beginning to produce now -- we've got two guys capable of dominating on any given night, and they are taking turns.
Christie ( C+ ) -- sloppy scrappy game. Mixed in nice plays and energy with sloppy turnovers and blown layups. Overall still made some contributions, but was hardly trustworthy.
Bibby ( B- ) -- started off the game not so much scorching hot as just very aggressive offensively. Was looking for the shot, the drive, just attacking. And the result was a big 1st quarter. But even while it was going good he was still a little bit sloppy. And he got very quiet after the first, except for making a few bad TOs.
BJax ( C ) -- out of rhythm again. Took a scary fall in the 2nd quarter as he was knocked out of the air by a Kenyon Martin "accident". Came back with a few inspirational plays therafter, and competed well against the Nuggets PGs (who both shot terribly). But just no consistency.
Songaila ( B+ ) -- weird game for Darius because the Nuggets were shorthanded across from the frontline, and so were guarding Darius with OGs and SFs. Results were strange -- he really helped us out again by scrapping and scoring around the hoop. On the other hand he rebounded poorly despite his size/strength advantage. Still a good game for him -- gave us energy and hustle on a night when Webb's legs were dead.
Ostertag ( B- ) -- short first half stint. Actually looked better than he has at any point this season, and did a few things for us -- grabbed a few boards, nice assist, stood tall inside on defense. But apparently Rick did not agree (or tore out his last hair on a couple of awful Tag offensive moves) and he did not return after the break.
Barnes ( C+ ) -- didn't show his versatility in this one. But the one thing he did do -- rebound -- is exactly what we need most.
Evans ( INC ) -- just a minute of garbagetime.
Martin ( INC ) -- in garbagetime had a nice drive...but got it thrown back in his face by Tskitishvili at the rim. Also made a nice assist to Bobby for a buzzer beating three...that did not count. Been that type of season for Kevin so far.

Adelman ( B+ ) -- this wasn't the best Kings effort -- we made some dumb mistakes, seemed to slip into and out of gear, missed a lot of easy shots. Hard to tell how much to blame that on the coach though. But the rotations were solid and we hung in there and got better as the game went along. Hard to complain too much with a relatively easy win.

Except for that very near miss with K-Mart and B-Jax, the game was relatively uneventful, the kind of game that you don't miss much if you're gabbing with someone. I liked our pace though, it did stay pretty constant - even though some apparently walked thru the glue strip at the half court on the way to offense, hehehe... anyway, good grades for all and a GREAT win, we were successful.

Just for fun, since we actually watched the game (at a local watering hole), I wrote down my uneducated opinions before I read Brickie's assessment. Based on little more than feelings, I had nearly identical ratings as Brickie. I rated Bibby and Peja a little higher. Peja couldn't rebound, but he got a couple of steals and was pretty aggressive on defense. I also gave coach Adelman an A-.

How did Bobby avoid cracking his pelvis. That fall would have crippled a normal man. Notice he broke the fall, ever so slightly, with his left hand, then his right hand, then a tiny bit with his left leg. Bobby's fall would have caused an international soccer hero to cry like a baby and throw fits of agony. He would have required a stretcher, an army of medics, six to ten minutes of stoppage time, and a half-hour interview with some other sissy from Sun Magazine.

I think the Sonics game was an aberration. If you take that game out you can see the Kings getting progressively better each and every game. If that continues, we'll be unbeatable by January ;) :)

I would take out the first three as well - it's almost pre-season anyway ;)

I would also have graded Peja a notch higher. He looks like he's on the way to regaining the touch. I sure hope so.

Great game by Brad. As always, love the intensity and the hard work -- but also the smiles. ;)

I agree with Songaila's grade, too - he did a good job out there; kept the energy up and kept hustling.

What's the team grade? :)

I gasped when I saw Bobby fall hard, so it was such a relief to see him stand up and dust himself off - definitely no need for stoppage time that those footballers always seem to require. :D

You mean those big ugly guys in helmets and body armors? Yeah, they are ***** compare to Bobby. :D

team grade's gotta be a b+, imo. the shooting percentage was lower than i would have liked, but i can forgive that on the second game of a back-to-back. the point is, on offense, the kings got the shots and ran the plays they wanted. webb had at least 5 or 6 passes that very easily could have been tallied in his assist total, but the shots (most layups!!!) wouldnt fall. on defense, i'm seeing some improvements from the first few games. i like that im seeing the kings play defense, period. their perimeter d needs some work, as well as the rebounding, etc. but i am impressed with the general man-to-man and on-the-ball defense from the kings. theyre gettin better at keeping their man in fromt of them, and are helpin on d when they get beat. the switching and rotating back is getting better, too. all in all, im impressed with the turn-around they've shown this weekend. if this is indication of things to come, then i think we can stop worrying so much. its gonna be an up and down season for the kings, but i think we'll come out all right. :)

OK, what do you guys think?

I think when Darius Songaila made that terrific block, and Doug Christie grabbed the loose ball and was dribbling down court, he looked at Darius funny. Darius began running down-court like a nine-year-old running to catch the Good Humor truck. In the meantime, Brad was charging down court like a 4-8-4 mail train. I submit to you that Doug made an ad hoc decision to give the ball to Songaila for the lay-up long before he passed the ball to Brad in the middle. I think Brad read the same look that Darius read. Am I wrong? I think Doug called that play with a simple long look at the boys moving down court. Brad got the assist. Darius got the block and the basket. Doug made it happen.

The Euro and Latin soccer-sissies call their game "football." I think that is what was meant by "footballers". They don't wear much padding. They probably stuff little Kleenex tissues in their shorts.

Didn't get to watch the game. Seemed to be an ugly game from both teams from your comments, but I'm glad we got the win though. Do we actually have a winning streak now? What is the world coming to? :D

hehe...ya can read into it however ya want. ;) it basically just comes down to a group of guys being unselfish, playing team basketball. brad could have easily taken that shot up by himself, but like ya said, darius made the great defensive play and hustled back, and was rewarded by his teammates. plays like that make me smile, as a kings fan and a fan of the game of basketball. :D

Doggie, I thought you knew that I knew soccer (the real football!!!) very well. :) I was teasing...

At least we did not steel the name which btw has nothing to do with the game You call football around here.

As I recall, Darius Songaila signed on for less money because he wanted to stay in Sacramento. He needs to lose that little tag.

This is no surprise. There are an infinite number of ways that I can screw up.

I love soccer, but don't like famous and wealthy wimps. I have seen a lot of amateur soccer players take unbelievable hits and keep on playing.

That depends, I've seen that too, but there is a "hit from behind" thing that is very dangerous and often very painful.

I will give Violet Palmer her usual grade - F.

I cannot for the life of me understand why she is still an official in the NBA, other than for gender/race reasons.

Yeah, I saw that fast break play the same way; no way that play happens without thinking about it first. It ought to make it onto highlights somewhere real quick...

Webb's grade could be higher because he showed brains tonight. Often times, when he is having an off night he'll force the action. Tonight he let the game come to him, even though it was much worse then he would have liked.

Good grades, i feel Webber looked good with his passing , and was coming alive towards the end before foul trouble but hey its just my opinion, also Miller deserves that A , what a great player.

They played like the real Kings two nights in a row. We can all take a collective breath.

: takes a breath :

Agree with Bricks grades pretty much.

Pejas played descent defense against Anthony (as Adelman mentioned in his postgame conference) but his rebounding stunk.... He needs a kick in the rump to rebound better... grr

The guys covering the game for the Nuggets did say that Peja is an underrated defensive player. I also think he did a decent job against Anthony.
