Don't Make Me Use The Bat
A tale of four horsemen...

Artest ( B- ) -- while officially one of those "Four Horsemen" (we had four 20-pt scorers tonight do virtually all of our scoring -- got 8pts out of the rest of the team combined), this was not really that great a game for Ron. Was off to an aggressive start, some good, some forces, and then just abruptly shut down and was not heard from for the rest of the half. Was playing terribly in the third, forcing up just absolute junk, and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the shot locked in, and he drained 4 straight shots and suddenly had a 10 pt quarter in about 4 minutes. Then he disappeared again and except for a couple of posessions using his bulk in late, pretty much called it a night. As far as making others better, Ron set up Cisco for several of his bombs tonight, but otherwise was pretty selfish and mostly just concerend wiht his own offense. On defense it was mixed bag -- Ron, and basically everybody, did well against Carter, but nobody ever really got a good grasp on Jefferson, who other than turning it over every thrid possession, dominated play. Got a couple of blocks down inside, but for another game on this roadtrip Ron did not show well on the glass. And so one of the four horsemen, a 20pt night, but not a great night by Ron Artest standards.

Moore ( C ) -- reminded the Nets of a few of the things he does in the first half -- follow layup, 18ft jumper -- and some of what he does not (2reb) on his way to a middling first half. Really should have stepped up and formed more of an impediment to Jason Kidd on the final play of the half as Kidd drove 60 feet in 3 seconds for a layup, and Mikki as the last line of defense just sort of politely hopped out of the way. Was quiet after halftime on both ends, although I think did somewhat disrupt Sean Williams (who put on a helluva shotblocking display BTW) just by his superior height and length.

Miller ( B+ ) -- The second fo the four horsemen..some scrappiness on the glass in the early going, which was fortunate because he was all alone in there, but was simply no match athletically for Sean Wiliams inside in the early going as the jumping jack blocked or disrupted anything wihtin 15 feet of the hoop. Finally found a way to get some points in the late second by venturing way out to the perimeter for threes and drives, and it opene up the floor for him for the rest of the game. Not terribly bigmany, but making use of the versatility. Had a better night playing Raef LaFrentz than he normally does -- hit 2 of 3 three pointers this time out, on nice feeds from Salmons and....forgot who else. The numbers were there again tonight for the third night in a row, but watchign this game this was not at the same level as the others. He fought on the glass and it was a very solid 10 -- in traffic, blocking out, fighting for them. But offensively it just sort of happened -- whereas in the last two Brad was hitting everything he shot and was very tough to guard for long stretches, in this one most of his success came when the Nets had to overreact to others, not Brad. And he was never very involved in the passing game and did not have much impact there. So another strong game, one of our four guys tonight. But not the best of them.

Salmons ( A ) -- coming off of a sluggish roadtrip so far, all John did was turn in a career game. Big enough that I actually pondered a "+" to this grade, which maybe gets handed out half a dozen times a season to anybody. Big big first half outperforming the Nets' star wings. Off to a very active start, and able to get basically anywhere he wanted to go on the court on the drive or break. Did not slow down later either, and the thing was that his outside jumper was just ridiculous all night, making the drive that much tougher to stop for a team without a stopper at those positons. The only thing that looked remotely shaky were his FTs. And in a bit of a rarity for John, broke the tunnel vision and repeatedly set up other Kings with all the attention he was drawing himself, including the draw and kick assist for the backbreaking Cisco three in the final minute. Just one of those nights where anything and everything was working and this was John's game, and John's victory, all the way.

Beno ( D+ ) -- poor game going against Kidd and continuing what has largely been a struggle on this road trip. Box score (0pts on 0-8 shooting, but 8 assists) was rather more dramatic than the game really -- you rarely noticed Beno was on the floor really. Kidd wasn't great -- "only" an 11pt 10reb 9ast game -- but he was largely playing alone in this one. Beno actually ended up losing some of his minutes to combinations of Douby/Cisco/the emerging Jones, and we were better off for it. In the final two minutes pulled up lame and was barely able to get the ball over halfcourt before having to call an injury timeout, but turned out to just be a bruised shin type of situation (painful, but hopefully not too lingering).

Cisco ( A- ) -- the last of our four horsemen, and likely the best aside from Salmons. Came in firing, and stepped right in off the bench to hit a wide open three after the Nets got overconcerned with Ron. Also hit a banked three at the first quarter buzzer to give us a three point lead going into the second, and largely continued the streak into the next quarter. Initially was running some PG with Jones at the OG, then switched over to a more normal positon once Douby came in (not that he is remotely a PG either). Played a remarkably one dimensional game for Cisco -- 0reb 0ast 0stl 0blk but 3 TOs in his 26 min. Basically all it was was scoring. But the scoring remained hot throughout, and if you watched the game he had more impact than such one dimesnional number would indicate. 24pts in 26 min, and as the topper drained the backbreaking three in the final minute off of a kickout by Salmons.

Jones ( B ) -- initially in ahead of Douby in the rotation, with Cisco at backup point, scrapped, but not horribly effective first half. Good defensive minutes in the second half, and again displayed nice ability to fiinish on the break. Already in his brief time has become a dependable rolepalyer. We got to see again some of his limitations as a shooter/free throw shooter, but he scrapped and banged, hit the glass, was very physical for a player his size, and you can see has quickly earned the confidence of the coaching staff.

Hawes ( INC ) -- got very short first half minutes before being pulled. And that was that. Never returned, and the boxscore sys he got all of 1:54 of excting action. It also says he got an assist, which I do not recall. Do remember he would have had a nice one to a cutting Douby, but Quincy choked the wide open layup.

Thomas ( INC ) -- short first half stint, grabbed a rebound, that was it. Very much like Hawes, just set aside in this game as Reggie went hard after another road win.

Douby ( C+ ) -- came in struggling on offense, but hustling on "D". Its another 10 minute 0pt 1ast type outing, but because of the defensive hustle felt better than those kind of washout numbers might indicate. Continues to show an amusing willingness to slink his scrawny frame down amongst the trees to scrap after balls and try to draw charges. Right now looks lost offensively, but is trying to hold onto his minutes as a defensive roleplayer. With Beno ineffective, there were only a couple of minutes (his first) when we got noticeably worse with him in there, which I suppose is a step forward of sorts.

Reggie ( ) --

I'm still surprised Frank didn't start Jason Collins - maybe he's injured. But man, that Sean Williams really showed everyone what he could do with starters minutes.

I wanna see a sean williams grade in there, what was that 7? 8? blocks? that was fun to watch.

incidentally, Jason Kidd looked good in the parts I watched, but has Carter fallen off a table or something? I don't remember seeing him do much, what happened since toronto?

I thought Jones' minutes off the bench showed some pluses and how he can use his size as a good defender and to get to the rim. Douby still looks like he is learning the NBA game. Can be aggressive defender one minute then treating the ball like a hot potato the next. And poor Beno, seemed awed by Kidd and was just, off.

Vince has been like htis since the playoffs last year. There are two prevailing theories as to why. First is that this year he has accepted the fact that Jefferson is the main focal point of the offense (or at least an equally emphasized one) and that has led to him sort of pulling back a bit from his game. The other theory is that he is up to his old tricks again...he got a big contract after playing very well last year and is now just taking the regular season easy.
