Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Evans ( B- ) -- quieter game than his numbers suggest. Did ok, but I'm actually kind of surprised he got the numbers he did. Was pretty quiet out there for much of the night, and the least effective of our starters. With no bench, still logged a lot of minutes, and was able to make some plays on atheltic swoops to the hoop as the game went along.
Songaila ( A+ ) -- kid had himself a huge career game tonight. Should send Don Nelson part of his paycheck -- Nelson (and then Avery after Don got tossed) kept on screwing around with 3 and 4 guard lineups, and Darius took full advantage by punishing the Mavs around the hoop. At the other end of the floor Rick's decision to go zone for most of the game was well suited to Darius's talents -- he's not always big enough, quick enough, or long enough in man to man D, but what he does well on defense is rotate and hustle, both keys in a zone. Perfect setup for him -- smart enough to take advantage of the Mavs joke 4 guard defenses, and hustled well enough to be effective in the zone along the baseline. Fumbled some balls, made some sloppy plays, but staking out an early claim for the starting spot before Kenny Thomas even catches up with the team.
Miller ( B+ ) -- Really manned up on the glass tonight. Again part of that was the Mavs decision to play small ball all night, so Brad was basically ripping it away from a variety of swingmen and point guards. On offense started off well, but became erratic as the game went along with the Mavs small ball and switching defenses seemed to throw him off. On defense however, started to settle in and get stronger as the game progressed. Was able to actually disrupt a little around the hoop, and was very strong on the defensive glass in the second half. Set a MONSTER pick on Devon Harris in the open court which actually knocked him out of the game.
Mobley ( B+ ) -- sloppy game, but he really tried to bring it tonight. Struggled to find the range from the 3pt line, but hit a couple of big clutch threes down the stretch. Attacked the hoop all night long, and was rarely met by anybody over 6'5". Made a lot of bad passes that turned into turnovers, but I suspose at least he was looking to pass. Most of his scoring was pretty individual -- we scored a lot of points tonight but the offense was kind of broken for much of the night.
Bibby ( A- ) -- for a game at least, it was Bibby's team. Was aggressive and vocal from the very start of the game. But seemed to tire out down the stretch -- got very quiet after dominating the first three quarters. Continues to miss FTs at bad times, but not the story tonight. Amazingly, still managed to stand out on defense even though we were in a zone that should cover up individual weak defenders -- on a couple of occasions just did not even bother to wave or run at guys he should have rotated onto. This was probably an "A" game through three, but like I say, just seemed to run out of gas late and was unable to carry us to victory when we needed him.
Martin ( C ) -- got a long first half stint. Didn't do much. Hit a long three -- looking more comfortable from that range. Also got introduced to Shawn Bradley on an attempted follow of his own missed drive.
Ostertag ( C ) -- disappointing game for Tag. Tonight Rick goes to a defense which looks like its perfectly suited to his particular talents (i.e. being big) and he really wasn't all that effective. Blocked a shot, blocked an entire man once, but also got boarded over by an even bigger man in Bradley and never really shut the middle down.
House ( B- ) -- came in for a couple of short stints and hit jumpers in each. Was the only bencher to get a call in the second half.

Adelman ( A- ) -- We just ran out of gas in this one. Heck of an effort under the circumstances though. And Rick really coached himself a game. Game got wacky, with Rick experimenting almost as much as Don Nelson. Both teams were a real mess -- Mavs looked almost as screwed up as we were -- Mavs played 8 men tonight -- 4 of the 8 play at least a little PG. So you had the Mavs playing super small ball and all sorts of odd lineups. And Rick responded by breaking out something that I wish we'd seen MUCH earlier in the season with a 2-3 zone that had the Mavs baffled there for a long while. Of course, like most zones it opened up all sorts of offensive rebounding opportunities for the Mavs, and they just killed us there again. Rick tried a 4 guard lineup, he tried a mega-Tag/Miller/Songaila lineup -- tried a lot of stuff tonight. Also generally used his timeouts well to try to keep us in it, although once or twice I thought they might be a possession late down the stretch. Gets the minus for shortening his rotation to only 6 in the second half (leaving out Tag and Martin who weren't especially effective). Those guys weren't doing great, but in a game where we tired out late, maybe a few minutes of rest would have helped.

Good effort by the team.

I believe too they are going to play HARD every night. But does the management really put an effort for us to WIN? I don't think so.

miller missed too many lay ups in the 4th.... drop him half a grade.... we're down by 2 and you miss a lay up against the mavs... that should be easier than shooting ft's....

Brick, now I know you have a tough scale. That was one helluva effort. Sure, we gave up 107 shots in 48 min's, but 29 bench min out of 240 player min avail counts for something. Six guys took on the game, and played their asses off. They get A's in my book. Go beyond the score, go beyond the expectation and look at the heart. Six guys, with an awful lot against them, gave it their all - left nothing on the floor. Honestly, first time I can say that about the guys this season.

Big BRAVO and A's to the Kings.

Good grades. I am surprised that the guys were still standing late in the fourth. They just ran out of gas. I thought it was a very commendable effort on the part of all the players.

I hope the rest of the League takes the Kings for granted in the remaineder of the season. These guys will beat some people. The three Chevrolet forwards we just got can all rebound. If the Kings would have had some more beef to bang around in the paint, rebound, foul, and block some shots, maybe the guards would not have been so tired.

Dallas is gonna be embarassed when the Kings beat them in the playoffs 4 to 1.

I am a 20 year bandwagon fan as called in another thread so maybe I should jump off the Wagon.

But I will say tonight’s HEART and Effort was more then I ever expected and am really impressed at what I saw transpire tonight. More guts then I expected.

I was emotionally drained after last night so just imagine how the team was feeling that spent years with Cwebb.

Great grades and comments Brick. Your best grades and observations so far this year IMO…

Good grades, Brick. Just out of interest: Have you already adjusted your grading scale considering that Webb is gone? I know that you grade according to the expectation/ability (like golf handicap I guess, it is the only correct way to grade individual performance in a team sport). I always thought that Webber was level 1 and everyone else followed.

Inquiring minds would like to know what is the new scale going to be?

fact........... bench minutes Sac 29, Dallas 74. Yeah, so both team had eight players. Bag Adleman, it doesn't matter, Six guys played their asses off.........

have i ever mentioned how much i love those picks? :D

any you who i really hate how Dallas made such a big deal about it...anyone who watches the Kings on a semi-regular basis knows that Brad Miller is one of the best at those picks...and really he has one about every 2 games or so...remember the last one he had on Kirk Hinrick in Chicago..it was the same thing as this...and i don't remember the crowd booing OR Scott Skiles getting T'd up and thrown out of the game

Brad really would make a GREAT linebacker...hehehe :p

as for the grades...really really fair...

Neptune had an absolutely nasty game tonight...and he still prolly won't get the credit that he deserves...::sigh::

team effort is no doubt an A+
like Padrino (i believe it was) said in another thread it was a moral victory

in a way this game reminded me a little bit of the GS overtime game we had and then once we got down i thought it was very much like the last time out against the Celtics...ofcourse it didn't have the same great ending...but ill take the effort

GO KINGS!!!!!!

Hey now! Don't take it to your heart. VF21 was pretty quick to close that thread. I watched the game at my local bar and the cook there was really upset: He is a Bulls fan that follows Kings only because of Webber. He too, said some stupid stuff. I guess we shoould be extra patient and understanding with our fellow Kings fans this time.

If it means anything to you, I _know_ you're not a bandwagoner. :)

People are always asking me things about my scale, past grades etc. like its a science. ;)

Think I'm going to publish a book -- Grading for Dummies, A Statisical Analysis of the Relative Assignation of Grades to Professional Basketball Players, by Professor Brick L. Ayer . :p

Actually bozz, you want to hear the distressing kicker -- I think subconsciously I adjust the grades all the time according to how I think they are going to do before the game. These grades actually started out higher, and I had to consciously go back and reign them in some to make them more consistent -- I thought there was a possibility we might get blown out tonight.

Well, I also thought that we'll get blown out tonight. But, I am not BS-ing you: I think your grading is very usefull barometer _because_ you adjust for expectation and talent level.

I'll buy the book. :)

brick............ i should rather think that at times rather than a subjective scale of pre-determined syopsis, you would combine karma with the majic 8-ball and tea leaves. I shall wait for the sequel " Sac Kings: A Quixotic Personification of Performance and Results"

I'm with you. I'm not rebounding from this trade as quickly as I would like, I still feel like my heart was torn out. I am proud of our players tonight & I love this team, but I am still hurting.

that was a great effort from the kings. they hung in there much longer then i expected them to being shorthanded and emotionally drained. this is probably the only loss this year that i really don't feel ticked, pissed, bitter, sad etc about.

kings stepped it up. daruis goes for a career high, and 12 boards. he was on FIRE!!!!! that was just an awesome game from him. i really hope the kings make sure they sign him up long term. he is the real deal.

brad had a great game, boarded, and that PICK!!! that was freaking awesome. totally clean. only thing is man DUNK that ball!!!! all those layups he was missing late were killing me. it was shawn freaking bradley SHAWN BRADLEY. come one. taht guy sucks.

great heart I LOVED that.

Quixotic! I love that reference. I think Brick should wait for us to win the championship before releasing that volume. You know - to maximise marketing opportunities.

Thanks, look I love these guys, of course I watched tonight and screamed my heart out. But I really think they've been put in a bad position, and I hope I'm wrong, I really do... we are gonna find out one way or another... real soon.

I think the Kings played well, and since I was not able to watch the game, I hope that all of the observations made about the fatigue level are accurate.

Still, I wonder how much of the "collapse" was fatigue, and how much of it was just the pattern that this team has fallen into beginning with the Phoenix loss a couple of weeks ago? I'd prefer the collapse be due to fatigue, but something in the back of my mind tells me that is not the whole story. I hope I'm wrong.

Like you, I hope this is not a continuation of the former pattern but take a look at the stats on ESPN at this link:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=250224006

Minimum minutes for starters was 38 for Mo Evans. The bench max (3 players) was 10.

Team Grade: A

They didn't play perfect but they played well; with heart, hustle, and desire under awful circumstances against a higher ranked opponent. I screamed and hollered for them for all the right (mostly) reasons. :) But that's just one fan's opinion.

I feel bad for Mike and Cat. The kings "added" (if you want to call it that) to their front court, but left those two guys hanging....come April, they are going to be hanging by a thread. 0 depth in the guard spots = big min. for Mike and Cat.

As someone else pointed out in another thread, ignoring the fact that Bibby, Mobley and Miller played 40+ minutes (since that is just a 5 to 10 minute escalation from their normal minutes), Mo and Darius had to be dead since their game fitness level is probably capped out at the 25 to 30 minute mark. Certainly a factor to consider.

Still, as I mentioned, this is a reason fans are willing to accept, but I'm concerned about the former pattern, with or without CWebb on the roster. Kings pulled the same routine in Seattle recently. Had a lead in the 4th, couldn't hold it. Didn't have Miller, so were also shorthanded. It's a rut I'd prefer the Kings exit as quickly as possible.

anyone who watched from 5 min to 3 min left in the third quarter, anyone who has ever played the game, that doesn't think that was all heart, doesn't know a) the rigors of two minutes extreme cardio excercise, b) the will to perform when your feet are lead and your lungs are on fire, c) pride!
