[Grades] Grades v. Lakers 04/13/11

Yep 29 teams will be calling if we make him available.

The question is, how much would they offer? We are not getting a Blake Griffin for him. If he stays on the same track, we're not even getting a Darren Collison for him (theoretically of course. I am not starting a trade Reke thing here. Yet, at least...).

His play has frustrated me this year as well, and the path to becoming a point guard or lead guard (which I think is still viable at this point in his career) ends with him, but it begins with the coaching. I'm absolutely disappointed and more than a little fed up that the staff has allowed the wanna-be A.I. Iso Superstar charade to continue this long into his development. Last year, with the dearth of offensive options available, I could understand that type of play.

But this season brought more than enough reasons to dial back his usage in the offense and focus on teaching him to run the entire team and not just get his. Instead, Westphal threw all ideas of integration out the door and decided that having everyone take turns on offense was going to be the M.O. Our results for much of the year are telling of how successful that approach is. The basic pick & roll is a rarity in this offense, and in fact, we fake the play and return to the iso far more often than we actually go through with it. This is on the coaching. A team this young should not be allowed to freelance as much as it does. The final minutes of last nights game and the OT are indicative of why Westphal is not going to be good enough to develop this squad to where it should be. He's as bad a decision maker as Tyreke is. Tyreke, DMC and others need a teacher, but Westphal is nothing else but an enigma. Can't have it.

This.

Tyreke generally doesnt play stupid/selfish until the game is on the line...Then he blows it. Dude just wants to be a hero and take the game over, but he isnt close to being that type of player. Thing is, he COULD be that type of player down the line, and you cant say that with just any prospect.

The 20/5/5 campaign really messed things up. Reke has absolutely no leash, and the dude needs a short one. Best coaching move of the season was that game where Westphal kept Reke out during crunchtime. He needs to do that more often until Reke wises up.

Tyreke can be Hardaway 2.0, or he can be Hughes 2.0...It all comes down to coaching, and the effort he is willing to put in on improving his game. This year was a bust, but Rose and Durant had sophomore slumps too. Just dont know about Reke's work ethic and the ability of our coaching staff to mold him into a good player.

Fingers crossed. Tyreke has awesome potential. Just needs to grow some brain cells.

Reke, Donte, Omri, JT..... All our young players had a slight to moderate regression this season. That is telling, and disturbing. Especially since we are rebuilding via youth. Westphail dicking around sans system isnt the way to teach these young players the game.

Ohhh, Brickie.

I don't quite remember when you started doing these threads, but I have looked forward to them after every game. Even the themes! Your insight and knowledge of the game rivals that of any other basketball pundit. Lord knows how much time and effort you have put in to these threads and for that I, and others, are thankful for.

:)

I could not have said it better as my english is not very good.
THANK YOU Bricklayer for the tremendous job you're doing for us !

Guys please explain something to me. Derozan had no J in his rookie year same as Tyreke. Year two Derozan comes and averages 8 more points or so with a much improved field goal range jumpshot. I mean if he can do it, why can't Tyreke? I don't know whether to question Tyreke's work ethic when it comes to improving the jumper or he just has bad trainers in the summer time. Something has to give here. no?

Work. Ethic.

Shooting is mechanics. Learn a different mechanic, shoot an inordinate amount of times until it's muscle memory. Then learn how to keep the same mechanic through all different scenarios. Put in your time. If you guys say that Tyreke is a smart guy, then the only excuse he has is that he hasn't put in the time.

I think he put in the time, actually got better, but wasn't that smart. He listened to his brothers telling him to just shoot like he did in high school, and combined with his foot problems I think all his work on his shooting just flew out the window

I'll say this for the 1001th time: He needs to hire an excellent shooting coach.

NOT his brother.

And then he needs to work his A$$ off during the off-season with the excellent shooting coach.

Yeah there is a reason why he was lighting up high school kids with his old jumper, he was man among boys.

--but I always expect the 3rd year to be his All Star type year. Like Chris Paul, Rose, Westbrook.

For all of you saying he needs to hire a shooting coach. That is 100% correct and I agree with you. His form is awful at times and it's painful to watch, there is zero and I mean zero repetition. He needs to stop watching high school tapes and realize he is a professional, not a high school kid. I don't think his brothers know what the hell their doing with his talents, I mean if he doesn't get somebody else to guide him and I mean the best trainers, he's just never going to reach his potential or even 70% of it.
