Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Artest ( B+ ) -- in the first half started off with a nice block on Mason, but then got quiet and occassonally a little sloppy with the ball. Was more aggressive after half, and in the early 4th dominated action with yet another one of those hot streaks of his as he scored inside and out. Missed a big (for preseason) shot to try to win it at the 9 second mark as Chandler came over to intimidate. Defensively not a huge game, but did get on the glass this time.
Thomas ( B ) -- started off playing good defense against the nearly as small as David West, and made a number of good interior passes to set Reef up for easy layins. Rebounded well for most of the night, but did nothing on offense. Even the passes were offset by 6 turnovers (pretty atrocious for a non-primary ballhandler). And struggled from the line, including missing two clutch FTs in the final two minutes.
Reef ( B ) -- in the first half had 10 points, but a lot of them were simple conversions as he was repeatedly hit with good passes and converted easy layups. Second half came out hot from the perimeter, and was popping in jumpers from the perimeter to avoid the much bigger Chandler. Also came up with a nice block on Paul in a possession in which our midget frontline actually recorded back to back blocks by Reef and Kenny. But for the most part the interior defense was shaky (being kind) as the Hornets felt considerably comfortable running the ball right down our throat for layups at the rim. Interestingly did not really challenge Chandler inside with post moves until bizarrely deciding to gallop right at the big man and force up an air ball to try to win it on our last shot. Dumb dumb decision, whether it was Reef's or Muss's. Good scoring game in 34+min. In those same 34+ min? 6 rebs. Sounds familiar, and pretty sure its not because Bonzi is stealing his boards this time.
Martin ( B+ ) -- best player on the floor in the first half, pouring in 19pts inside and out. Did get a a little selfish on a 2 on 1 break with Ron, never giving the ball up and ending up missing a tough force on what should have been automatic. Closed the showcase by hitting a nifty fallaway baseline jumper over Tyson Chandler at the first half buzzer to give us the 1pt lead. Not much except scoring, but it was a LOT of scoring. But could not duplicate the effort in the second half, and got very quiet, although he did do a few little things here and there. Tried to close the third with another spectacular play like he had the second, but after making a nice steal on an ill advised crosscourt pass, he got run down and sandwiched by the midget combo of BJax and Paul and chunked the layup. Saw Peja talking to him as they came out for the second half -- clearly Peja was playing mind games with him. ;) Was going to get the little bonus points Peja used to as the designated technical FT shooter tonight, but was unable to fully convert and missed a couple.
Salmons ( C+ ) -- started off well using his size advanatge effectively on both ends of the court, but kind of disappeared after a while, and in the early second half was getting beat repeatedly by the much quicker Paul as he took over the game. Some low level effectiveness to start the 4th with Paul off the floor, but nothing special. Missed a clutch shot in the final minute.
Price ( B- ) -- in the first half had some impressive PGesque moments again where he was effective setting people up, but on the other end had trouble keeping Paul in front of him. In the second half came in and immediately dropped in a couple of 3pt bombs, but then despite being rewarded with a lot of minutes, got very quiet, and was completely invisible while running with the starters down the stretch of the game. Was finally subbed out for Salmons in the final couple of minutes. Kind of an oddly muted finsih to what had started out as another pretty good one for him.
Corliss ( C ) -- came in near the end of the first, and hey all ya Adelman haters...it was at center! Woot! Did little this time.
Garcia ( C- ) -- didn't do much in his first half minutes except force 3s and I don't recall him getting any in the second half
Taylor ( B- ) -- ok this time out, in that at least he did something, both good and bad. Finally converted on some shots, finally grabbed a few boards, was at least felt + heard from -- up until this point its been like trying to evaluate a ghost. Got credited with 3 TOs (saw those) and 3 steals (which I did not).
Hart ( INC ) -- got a short run at the end of the first half, missed his only shot, didn't do much else

Muss ( N/A ) -- welcome to our all 6'7" lineup...well almost. We had to put a 6'9" guy at center. Hmm...kind of reminscient of the '96 Bulls with the 6'7" Harper, 6'7" Pippen, 6'7" Jordan and 6'8" Rodman...NOT! ;) And then we go to the bench and decide to get even smaller with Corliss as the center. Kind of a worst case Rick Adelman move. Slopy sloppy game on our part again. No Douby, No Admundson, No Willaims, No Pot -- kind of hard to evaluate guys fighting for camp survival if they do not even play. We upped the ante in the mid 4th when we took out Ron...only to reinsert Kevin and Reef (our leading two scorers at that point). The Hornets seemmed to respond by reinserting Peja and Paul, and that was sort of that for the preseason evaulation of youngsters thing, and the game was on. Unfortunately, we sucked down the stretch this time, perhaps really missing Bibby. KT missed a pair. Salmons missed a jumper. Ron forced one over two guys. And Reef finished us off with a silly challenge of a 7'1" shotblocker who had been bothering us inside all night. Sigh. At least it was just preseason.

Peja ( ) -- after playing a lousy lacksadaisical game, Peja Stojakovic beat us with a clutch shot. In a regular season game, that's wrist slitting stuff. In preseason, that's just classic. ;)
Chandler ( ) -- gee, nope could not have used this guy at all.

Yeah, how about you actually post them this time? You know, so the revolting masses don't... uh... revolt...

Bricklayer: INC - a rare no show for the venerable Bricklayer, who didn't even bother to post grades this time, leaving PixelPusher and GoGoGadget to wax nonsensical about the propiety of their rear ends.

Erm, Pixel? You do know it's OCTOBER, right?

;)

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Did I mention turnovers! Man, they would have destroyed this team if it were not for plain carelessness on the offensive end. Muss is really giving these guys minutes too, probably to get them used to getting major minutes for the next couple of weeks.

Right on target about Muss not using those three bigs.

Pota I didnt miss, but why not give Williams and Amundson some minutes while Miller is out? Williams probably coulda done better at 5 then Corliss or Taylor...

I was at this game...Very very ugly game from both sides.

John Salmons --- (D) ---
Rather completly ineffective in the starting PG role...This is the John Salmons that played in Philly, as he would show up for a few games, then disapear for a month...Let's not make this a trend, John.

Kevin Martin --- (A-) --- Definatly the best offensive option on the floor tonight, despite pretty much disappearing in the second half. The guy is a deadly shooter when he is wide open.

Ron Artest --- (B-/C+) ---
The shot was off, but he did manage to go inside and grab boards. He really needs to take advantage of his strength inside, because at times he completly abused the Hornets inside, but would just revert back to taking jumpers.

Kenny Thomas --- (B-) ---
The role player does what he's out there to do. Grabs 10 rebounds, and has 5 assists...You really need to hit your freebies, though, Kenny.

SAR --- (B+) ---
One of the better games I have seen SAR have as a King. Honestly, I really do not see how he was a 20-10 player in this league, though...That aside, tonight he had his outside shot going, and was set up by none other than his favorite team-mate Kenny Thomas a number of times.

Ronnie Price --- (C-) --- He supplied a spark, but at times overdid it. He took ill-advised shots which really killed any sort of momentum we had...Not a bad sign, as he wasnt 100% worthless against the New Orleans "A" team.

Mo Taylor --- (C) --- Just ho-hum...A big man with absolutly no interior presense who shoots, and sometimes makes, jumpers, and who only grabs rebounds that come directly to him...He did that all tonight.

Corliss Williamson --- (D) ---
Did nothing in his stretch...Maybe you shouldn't have a lineup where 6'7 Corliss is the tallest player on the floor.

Frisco Garcia --- (Inc.) --- Came in, played an ugly stretch and never came back.

Jason Hart --- (Inc.) --- Came in, missed a wide open corner jumper, and never came back.

Musselman --- (N/A) --- If this were a regular season game, I would be rather upset. The last two plays of the game were pretty terrible, and at one point he had the PF/C combo that of Kenny Thomas and Corliss Williamson...I thought hobbit ball was a thing of the past...And Paul had a wide open path to the basket 90% of this game...It could not hurt us too bad to at least try Justin Williams as a goalie out there.

Only grades I really disagree with is Artest's.

He had 5 TOs to go with his poor shooting tonight.

I'd go C+.

But, that's just me.

I also was kind of dismayed at SARs rebounding. He looked so aggressive the other night, I was excited. But, tonight, he did his box out routine. Granted, Thomas and Artest were doing a good cleanup job ... I counted about 2 rebounds he SHOULD have gotten and they turned into offensive rebounds.

Right on target about Muss not using those three bigs.

Muss is going to give these guys a lot of minutes now because Salmons and Reef are inserted into the starting lineup, shortening our bench and he wants these guys to get some chemistry together.

I wouldn't sweat Reef's rebounding. The other night against the Jazz he had two gimme offensive rebounds (one off of his miss, one off of Kenny's) -- so he got 7, which looks good, and tonight he didn't get any gimmes and so that's 6 which doesn't look good. Pretty much the same game though. The important thing is that the Kings weren't beat on the boards, and the overall rebounding has looked ok. We're not going to win any games with our rebounding, but as long as we don't get killed I'm not going to sweat it with this lineup.

Salmons looked better than I expected at the point. He had some trouble bringing up the ball against Paul, but he looked very good defensively. He's going to have some trouble against small quick guards like Paul, but overall not such a bad game.

Kenny is looking like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. Great passing for easy buckets followed by a ton of turnovers. And that free throw shooting is going to become a problem.

Kevin needs to be more assertive in the second half. This isn't the first time he's posted 15+ points in the first half only to disappear in the second.

And yeah, wish we had Chandler.
