Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Ok, well....a depressing exhibition as we were falling apart right before your eyes turned into a big defensively keyed 4th quarter rush. There are still red flags all over this one, but hey, at least we played it right for a quarter.

Now as for the rest -- Cousins got swarmed, and oh yes, smacked right in the jewels, and did not respond well at all, with a near flashback to all the Bad Boogie of the last few years. just barely held it together. Note: if you're triple teamed, somebody is open big guy. Note 2: with these dips for teammates even if you're not you may not get the ball. At the same time his idiot teammates would be wearing dunce caps in a flock of sheep, did absolutely nothing to help him at all, but oh yes, found ways to help themselves. I am starting to have grave concerns about Grevis, and his defense in particular. Is that even tolerable? He just can't guard. PPat would get lit up by Mikki Moore. But our two best guys came off the bench for us, and one of them was our touted rookie, so it ain't all bad. There were spots of grit scattered, we were dead in the water and fought back. But we look out of sorts so quickly again. Just no excuse for that 1 week into the season.

Salmons ( B- ) -- tricky grade, because realistically this was not only easily the best game Salmons has had thus far, its up near the top of what you can expect from him at any point this far into his career. And yet the game annoyed me, because in order for John to have his best game here it was basically back to the Keith Smart paradigm of let's get John Salmons going...at the expense of the 4 better players on the floor with him. But of course the question becomes how much do you grade John himself down for not only finally hitting some shots, but for at times functioning as a better PG than Grevis or IT, making multiple nice drive and dishes in the early going, and taking advantage of all the attention being paid to Cuz to get tot he hoop. In the early going there was nobody to defend as it was DeMarre Carrol he of the career 4.2ppg average. But later in the game John would have an impact hounding Korver and keeping him from ever settling into an easy shooting groove the way the Lakers let him the other night. Lost a bunch of what could have been a good grade here with his 3rd quarter play, as he came right out of the lockerroom and turned over our first possession of the half, then spent much of his time going 1 on 1 as our mercurial center seethed at being frozen out so old scrubs could have their fun. Got some of the grade back when he was reinserted for the stretch run, hounded Korver, hit a little jumper to get us under 10, and generally contributed to the backcourt's little show. --Brick

Stats: 31min 7pts (3-6, 1-3, 0-0) 9reb 1ast 2stl 0blk 3TO
Patterson ( C- ) -- A typical offensive game, floated around the perimeter and took the few open shots that came his was and thankfully hit a few more then in recent games. Fun "stretch four" fact, our starting power forward has zero free throw attempts on the season. On defense Patterson is looking more like a player without a position then a stretch four. Can't defend the post and his issue go well beyond size and strength. Millsap isn't a physically dominate big but he took it to Patterson with little resistances. His perimeter defense which look decent to close out last season hasn't be good either. He did do a nice job on the boards tonight, especially in the early going. Despite the rebounding effort this was a soft performance. Thought about going lower with this grade but he did some good things and with little support from his fellow bigs I figured he deserved to stay in C territory. --Henkel

Stats: 29min 12pts (5-12, 0-1, 1-2) 6reb 2ast 0stl 1blk 1TO
Cousins ( C ) -- The night started out promising for Cousins who had 6 points in the first and avoided getting into early foul trouble. He was fighting for rebounds on the defensive end, and fighting for position on the offensive side. But after the first quarter things quickly went downhill. Constant double and triple teams were frustrating him. His teammates were unable to get him the ball. He even took a knee to the head that had him laying on the ground for a couple minutes. Everything seemed to be working against him. After only taking one shot in the second and being beat on defense a handful of times you could feel the frustration taking over his emotions. During the second half we tried to get Cousins the ball some more but he was still fighting against the double and triple teams constantly, with little luck. After hanging his head and not getting back on defense which ended in a wide open Horford layup he was pulled until the fourth. Unfortunately the fourth wasn’t any easier on him. During a 1-minute sequence that ended with 3 Cousins fouls, one that was called a flagrant-1 before being downgraded to a normal foul, the night was pretty much over for him. Malone kept him in long enough to score on a take to the hoop and then had him on the bench for the rest of the night. If you could cut out Cousins poor body language and emotions tonight his play wasn’t all that bad. Much of his struggles were simple due to a lack of skill from his teammates. This lead to the Hawks focusing all of their attention on him. We can only hope he takes himself out of games less and less because of his emotions. It’s a long season Big Cuz, and your teammates are what they are. --Spud

Stats: 25min 15pts (5-10, 3-7, 2-2) 0reb 1aast 3stl 0blk 1TO
Thornton ( C+ ) -- Step forward, ladies and gentlemen, and take a look at the famous Marcus de Milo - he stands still as carven marble on offense and he may as well not have any arms (at least on defense). It's a good thing that he was generally assigned to the worst offensive player on the Hawks and that Atlanta was so focused on burning our frontcourt, or he might have been booed out of the building. For the first three quarters Marcus played a bored and disinterested game. He only scored seven points and made a grand total of two baseline cuts, one of which was barely above walking speed so I'm not sure it even counts. He was well on his way to a dismal grade, and then he entered in the fourth quarter. For some inexplicable reason he suddenly had perhaps the best two-minute stretch in his life between about the 4:45 and 2:45 marks. We came into the stretch down 12, but a Marcus three followed within about fifteen seconds by a fast break layup brought us within 7. A help steal to get us to a 3-point deficit and then a touch assist off a Patterson steal to a streaking IT brought the game within one. Unfortunately, that was as close as it got, and Thornton was up-and-down in the remainder of the game (a missed corner three, a great steal on the break followed by missing a layup and committing a loose ball foul for free throws, another great steal on the break followed by a three). So basically, we're looking at three quarters of D- followed by two minutes of A+++ and then another three minutes of A- at worst. I guess that averages out to a C+, but seriously, if MT23 plays with half the intensity he had during the final 5 minutes for his other 20 minutes, the Kings win this game. --Capt.

Stats: 20min 9pts (2-5, 1-4, 4-4) 3reb 4ast 0stl 0blk 4TO
Vasquez ( D- ) -- Not sure how much longer we can write off the Major's performance as lasting effects from his injury. If that is a big contributing factor, I think it would be helpful for Coach to state it. Because at this point, we're getting net negatives from the Tyreke Evans consolation prize. On defense, I'm not sure there is a position, I'd be comfortable having him guard. You could stick him on the 3 point specialists out there but our other perimeter defenders can't stick with PG's. He is flat footed, slow and rarely uses his height to disrupt shooters. I will say it looks like he is trying and he appears to fight through screens but he's over-matched and combined with the team's other defensive woes, it's killing us right now. He wasn't brought in for his D but rather to utilize his godlike traditional pg skills to create easy scoring opportunities for others. There are glimpses in that when he pushes the ball in transition and the few times he finds interior players with good angles. But mostly, he seems to pass the ball along to our other "starters" and then stand around. Aside from a nice floater each game, the rest of his shots feel forced. Not sure where this is heading as IT seems much better suited for a super 6th man role, but Vasquez needs to start adding something rather than simply taking away. --sdballer

McLemore ( B ) -- Ben McLemore and Marcus Thornton gave us a study in contrasts tonight. McLemore is the quick young pup out there, constantly moving, constantly going for the baseline cut (I counted 13 of them), and putting out full effort on defense. For instance, they teach you to play defense with your hands up, and Ben actually does it (stinkeye at Thornton). Still, I've been worried about Ben's defensive fundamentals (not his effort) all season. Tonight's outing has alleviated that a bit, though to be fair the Hawks weren't exactly attacking Ben in the same way that, say, Jamal Crawford has. His "big" defensive breakdown on the night was perhaps forgivable - with Outlaw above the FT line and ignoring his own man, Ben was forced to cover both wing players on the weak side. Recognizing this, he dropped into the paint, but still got beat on a cut from the angle that at the very least he was in the best possible position for. He might have seen it coming a little late, but he was in the right place. He also went straight up to Coach Malone at the next stoppage and asked advice on the situation, which I like to see. On another breakdown he let Cartier Martin get around him on an upfake but recovered to block the shot from behind. But some of Ben's defensive potential was flashed halfway through the fourth when he smothered DeMarre Carroll at the top of the arc, ultimately stealing the ball (he was rewarded for this by being taken out of the game). He also intercepted a telegraphed desperation pass in the first quarter and hit IT on the break with a nice pass for a layup. On offense, Ben was simply letting the game come to him. He was moving, cutting, getting open, and taking shots when they were there and passing them up when they were not. Perhaps he shot two threes that were too quick and too deep, but he hit one of them so it's hard to complain. He had a great sequence in the third quarter where he got a long offensive rebound, whipped the ball to Patterson for a missed corner three, came up with another tipped rebound and drove right to the basket for a soft reverse layup. Of the three shooting guards we trotted out tonight, he was a clear second best, far ahead of Marcus de Milo and admittedly a good couple of steps behind Beast Mode Thornton. But at least he was consistent in his effort all night. --Capt.

Thompson ( C- ) -- Did very little in the first half as part of a group that gave up the lead in a big way. For some reason doesn't look confident in his jumper, which has been a resurfacing issue throughout his career, so he's strictly relying on his ugly, often out of control, yet somewhat effective post game. Unfortunately somewhat effective wasn't enough to get it done against Horford and Hawks team focused on defending the paint. Never got it going on offense but had a much better stretch in the second half by contributing defensively at the center spot during much of our fourth quarter comeback. For some reason got pulled for the final stretch, not sure why we wanted to go small for the stretch run. Steady on the boards as usual. Overall a forgettable game salvaged by some late game grit and toughness. --Henkel

Thomas ( B ) -- This might be an unpopular grade, but I watched both pg's exclusively and this grade was earned. If this was for the 4th quarter alone, IT would be the proud recipient of an A. But since he played a part in 3 other ugly quarters, his grade suffered along with the team's performance. Let's get the bad news out of the way, Isaiah's defense through 3 quarters was awful, maybe even worse than Vasquez. If he wasn't fighting through screens off the ball, he was repeatedly playing soft through picks and forcing the rest of the team to recover. While this may partially be by design, IT has to at least make an effort to be a part of the defensive scheme. I counted play after play where IT basically waited for a pick to come and then watched the rest of the defense collapse. Vasquez sucks at D but at least he appeared to be trying while he flailed. On offense, IT was vanilla out there as he wasn't totally successful in creating for himself or others. It's the primary reason I will continue to resist starting IT. As impressive as he is, and his efficiency scoring is amazing, it always feels a little like the IT show. He misses passing opportunities, over-dribbles and seems to rarely set guys up in great scoring opportunities. All of that being said, he was terrific in the 4th. As his scoring increases, so did his energy on d. The laziness evaporated and he not only fought through screens, he stayed involved on a team level. I really believe the change in our first line of defense flustered the Hawks as they were so used to just floating by and they were suddenly left scrambling. He was talking with teammates, cheering them on and was the main reason we came back at the end. IT played the fourth with heart and passion on both sides of the court. If he can bring that same fire on defense all game, it can have a HUGE impact on the team. --sdballer

Stats: 14min 2pts (0-2, 0-1, 2-2) 3reb 1ast 0stl 1blk 1TO
Outlaw ( C+ ) -- this is a little grade for a little game, but Outlaw did not look terrible out there. He was back to not being able to shoot (small sample size of course), missing atough contested jumper after entering, then an open three. But again there was some unusal effort on the boards for him (and maybe there we see at least one of our guys absorbing Malone's boarding mantra) and some good challenges on D on the perimeter. Added a help block that saved a hoop inside, and really these weren't bad roleplayer minutes. --Brick

Stats: 13min 0pts (0-1, 0-0, 0-0) 0reb 1ast 2stl 0blk 0TO
Hayes ( B ) -- Chuck’s first playing time came during a 7 minute stretch that started at the end of the first and lasted a few minutes into the second. During this period he took his lone shot attempt which ended with Horford having +1 in the block column. His defense was rather poor as he kept getting caught out of position leading to a couple easy baskets and boards. Fortunately this didn’t carry over to his second stint of the night which accounted for the rest of his 13 minutes. In the fourth quarter the Chuck Wagon was partially responsible for erasing a big deficit and our almost comeback. Grabbing a steal that lead to a Thornton layup and playing good help D that lead to an IT steal were where we saw him finally make a positive impact. He didn’t force any shots and did just what we pay him to do, and nothing more. It was a rather good game for Chuck tonight. --Spud

We made it a game down the stretch which is good, the unfortunate thing is most teams would at home vrs the Hawks.

Before the game I believed this was a test of sorts for me personally. After a flattering preseason, home opening win against Denver and two losses against superb teams, were we mediocre right now or bad? I say this because a mediocre Lakers team just beat the Hawks at home and I believe a good 22+ NBA team would beat a 1-2 Hawks team at home... Well, tonight answered that question for me.. As a fan I am torn. I believe its actually better for the franchise that our record is bad for this upcoming great draft. On the other hand I worry about the arena momentum if the team stinks over the next period of time.

This roster has it's shortcomings. It's not perfect. It's not even 'good'.

But it is better than these guys are playing right now, I think we just need to find the right mix. These comebacks are just not sustainable.

DeMarcus Cousins had a really rough night. That being said, I'm not sure there is a defender in this league more equipped to defend Cousins than Horford. He's strong enough and has good enough balance that Cousins can't really power through him or beat him off the dribble.

Sure, they fought hard in the end, but overall they deserved a big fat L

Cousins, you just got a fat contract. Stop ****ing moping. For christs sake, you're supposed to be a leader. I can't stand your eye rolling and you dropping your head when things dont go your way. Just effin stop...

Vivek almost had a heart attack at the end.

Patterson ensured Vivek goes to sleep warm and cozy tonight.

1st Quarter: A : Just what the doctor ordered to start the game.
2nd Quarter: F : Unfortunately, what the doctor ordered never showed up. Instead, we got the generic, and far less effective, version of the medication, and proceeded to take it, and we suffered.
3rd Quarter: D- : After some rest, the generic medication slowly faded away and we began making our way back to normalcy. In the meantime, word got out that the "real" medication was on it's way, and it should arrive shortly.
4th Quarter: C+ : With the generic medication now completely out of our system, we began a spirited comeback. However, by the time the "real" medication arrived, so did the end of the game...

I think it starts with getting Cousins some scoring help in the starting lineup. I.E. Isaiah and Ben. If we stick with this current 5, the league is going to do exactly what ATL did tonight by doubling DeMarcus every time he touches the ball and letting our "shooters" brick shots all over the place. Yes, the "spark" is great and everything off the bench. But hey, that "spark" is even more important in the starting 5, especially when our best player is getting swarmed defensively with no space in the post.

Never seen seen Horford as a stopper C.

I've seen him get torched repeatedly on defense over the years. Cousins was impatient tonight. Either that or our shooters were just so cold early on that the Hawks doubled Cousins nonstop and forced him to rush.

Vasquez. Um, on one play he appeared to step out of the way of the defender. I couldn't hear but if he had said "after you" I wouldn't be surprised. It is not even close between Thomas and Vasquez. I think everyone knows who is better at this point.

I thought they would have adjusted to the triple teams on Cousins at the half. But nothing seemed to change.

It was strange the way Kings seemed to dominate the first quarter only to get owned for the next two quarters. Were they tired? Will conditioning improve through the season? Nice making a game of it at the end but it would have been a long shot just to get to overtime. Too little too late.

Not when he has two friends standing behind him, no.

Oddly enough this same roster did not work last year either, and seems to be struggling again. I am amazed I tell ya.

Vazquez keeps sliding looking to his teammates for help. Whether that is the scheme or not I don't know, but he has looked bad.
I'll give it some time on both sides of the floor.

I think our fourth quarter was a lot better than that. We went from 17 down to only 1 down at one point - it was a heck of a push and we had a legitimate chance to win the game, which I doubted midway through the third.

I know Cousins got jobbed by Dennis Scrotor, but I was pretty disappointed with his slow fuse meltdown over it. He basically took himself out of the game and only missed a flagrant foul by the refs realizing that Horford (who was legitimately pushed) sold the fall. I'm waiting (patiently) for Cousins to grow out of this, but at least he has showed signs of improvement.

I came into this season doubting Greivis after reading unflattering defensive stats and reports about his assist accumulation. As we got into the season I loved the passion in his interviews, both for the team and winning, and the floor general instincts he has at time shown. I know there must be a reason New Orleans had no probs trading him, and our front office apparently wanted Calderon over him, but I wanted to see him as a diamond in the rough and to have the capabilities to be an upper echelon pg for the next 10 years. Of course those are probably just homer thoughts but for the good of the franchise I want him to be a solid piece otherwise we might not have anything heading into the long term than Demarcus, Ben and IT and that is depressing

We could be pretty good if the team figures out how to turn the defensive intensity up at will, instead of only in the 4th.

I didn't pay attention.. but did Vasquez channel his man into the middle of the court?

In GS, Malone instructed Curry and jarrett Jack to channel their man into the middle for help 95% of the times when they faced a good ball handler. Jackson is still using that strategy with curry and Lee in iso situations.
I'm not a coach so I dunno, but I read an in-depth article on Malone's defensive system sometime back. He shares a lot of principles with Thibodeau's system.

A new system takes time to incorporate. The Warriors were still abysmal on D in malone's 1st year. Really bad. Didn't get good until 2nd year.

I played varsity ball in high school. Defense is a lot harder than offense to incorporate.
