Boxscore

Stats: 38min 13pts (4-10, 3-7, 2-4) 5reb 2ast 5stl 0blk 1TO
Summary: well, the shooting did not come around, but the few he hit were timely. Aroudn the ball on defense and the glass.

Casspi ( C ) -- started off hitting his first three, but then started missing everything again, and I think it had an effect on his overall confidence/game. Finally hit another one to cap a run in the early third, and his final three was a big shot in the mid 4th to get us the lead back. That shot seemed to inspire him to make a great hustle steal the other way, and that would be where Omri had what impact he was going to have. Didn't notch 5 steals with quick hands. but was around the ball a lot, chased well, and it felt like he got more than the 5 rebounds for which he was credited.

Stats: 30min 12pts (5-8, 0-0, 2-2) 11reb 0ast 2stl 0blk 0TO
Summary:another strong one for Willie, and hustle on the offensive glass a prob for Hawks all night. Needs to close better on threes however.

Cauley Stein ( A- ) -- some good early defense on Milsap, and was a very good matchup for him, being able to match quickness and add in tremendous length. Missed a dunk, as once again he was 5-8, but probably should have been 7-8 if he converted all the easy ones. But later backed off a dunk and hit a layup, and was all over the offensive glass, tipping and scrambling. Either he or Cuz came up with a big block with 3min to go (I thought it was Cuz, Grant seemed to think it was Willie, but then again Grant was gleefully trying to pin a proposed loss on Cuz's single technical, so not a neural observer). And more hustle on the offensive glass with 45 seconds to go in the game sent him to the line with his shaky FT stroke in a 1pt game, but he came up with the pair of clutch FTs (doing better in that regard than Collison would 40 seconds later). About the only negative here is something that has happened a number of times over the season -- despite his great defense inside, he appears to have a phobia about the 3pt line, and in the final minutes he TWICE failed to close out strongly on Hawks bombers, and Korver and Shroeder drained two threes because of it to abruptly put us in danger of losing it. Willie is right there too, has great length to cause a huge challenge, but acts like he;s afraid they are going to put it on the floor and go around him. Not in the "modern NBA" people like to bleat about. In the "modern NBA" they're going to chuck 'em big guy. Make it hard.

Stats: 39min 24pts (10-25, 1-1, 3-4) 15reb 5ast 3stl 2blk 6TO
Summary:the refs weren't calling much, and sure enough the Hawks got beneath his skin, nobody else was scoring, forcing him to do too much. And yet he was active on D and the boards and he made plays to win it.

Cousins ( C ) -- in the early going of this game was doing a nice job smoothly setting guys up off the attention he was drawing, and in particular set up Ben with several nice targeted drive and kicks like a 6'11" PG, drawing Ben's man, then kicking. Was much more active on the glass and defensively than he had been the night before when he was relatively sluggish in a "puny" 36-16 effort. Was up to 11pts and 8 rebs by the end of the first quarter, but was getting frustrated with the refs not calling much inside as the Hawks swarmed -- note the nearly ipossible (for Cousins) 25 FG to 4 FT ratio. That's not because he was shooting jumpers either. He was hammering inside, the Hawks were swarming and swiping, and the refs just weren't going to call that action. Cuz eventually lost his cool to the point of getting a technical leaving the game in the late 3rd, which from that point onward in a game in which we missed 59 shots and had 19 turnovers was going to be Napear's sole and only reason we were going to lose the game. No wonder the Great Stupidity happened to the fanbase a month ago. Because a real struggle to get productive play out of going to Cuz in low, but nobody else was hitting ANYTHING, the bench was worthless, and so with Rudy out again and again we just went to that well. Cuz still made enough plays that in a defensive war we held on. Had a great open court block on the speedy Schroeder, somehow avoiding the foul while volleyball blocking his shot out of bounds. Out of the timeout in the mid-4th while he was struggling and thinking he was getting doubled, came up with a burst. Either he or WCS had the big block with 3min to go, and he did a nice job of adjusting, catching, waiting, and then laying it up safely on the other side of the rim with 1:50 to go to put us up 4. Still, in the end our game winning score came when we called a play (btw, another night of excellent play calls out of timeouts) with 13 seconds to go using Cuz as a decoy, and then having him drop the ball off to a cutting Rondo for the game winning hoop. I don't think anything that happened in this one changed the perception that the Hawks are a real problem team for Cuz. Its not at all clear why given their personnel, so probably just coaching. But he went to war in there, and in a scrappy, ugly contest led the game in scoring, rebounding, and references to the referees mothers. We win. Good enough.

Stats: 34min 14pts (5-14, 2-7, 2-4) 3reb 4ast 2stl 1blk 3TO
Summary: played one of the best games of his career despite shaky shootngs. Helped in all other ways, and big time defensive hustle.

McLemore ( A- ) -- gave a taste of what was coming when he quickly got stripped on one end, but excellent hustle to race down the other way and stop the breakout. Got half of his points working directly with Cuz, hitting a corner three, and even getting a 4pt play and hopping up looking pumped, which is something we almost never see from him. Was aggressively attacking in the first half off his dribble. Of course since that dribble still ain't all that, just flat lost control of it a few times for turnovers. But this game wasn't about his offense anyway. He shot 5-14 on the night, 2-7 from 3pt one, and missed big shots we needed. Yet he still had a heck of a game because of his impact. He often gets accused of having defensive iompact, but I've rarely seen it. Tonight we saw it. It was full court flying hustle, breaking up multiple Hawks fast breaks just by being the best athlete, and he and Willie flying about athletically goes a long way toward explaining how we got ugly and defenisvely scrappy to out fugly the Hawks to a victory. More of this please, and we won't have to waste time plotting how to add a backcourt defender via trade.

Stats: 38min 11pts (5-16, 1-4, 0-0) 10reb 11ast 0stl 1blk 6TO
Summary: he made mistakes passing, and the Hawks exploited his lack of shooting and made it into a weapon for them, but he boarded, led, and hit the game winning shot.

Rondo ( C+ ) -- Rajon Rondo notched a triple double for us in this one, scoring his 10th + 11th points on our game winning shot. And yet for most of the night it was a real struggle for him. There were turnovers against Hawks defensive pressure, but mostly thee were turnovers of a different kind, as the Hawks scheme obviously included a healthy dose of leave Rondo open and go double the big guy, and Rajon just could not hit those wide open jumpers all night. Now what he could do was rebound, and he was a real factor in there as our 3rd 10+ rebound man on a night we crushed the Hawks on the glass. From time to time he would set Cuz up with something clever. But most of the night felt like a relative struggle for him, right up until a smartly designed play out of a timeout making use of all the attention Cuz was drawing for Rondo to get the finishing layup off a baseline cut.

Bench

Stats: 15min 6pts (2-5, 0-0, 2-2) 6reb 0ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Koufos ( D ) -- a poor poor game where he actively hurt us in most of his minutes. Just looked too slow for this battle, and was not able to stay with Milsap at all. He got a couple of little gimme hoops that oth4ers created, the first at the end of a wild pasing sequence with multiple near turnovers, the 2nd to close the 3rd on virtually Marco's only good play of the night. But otherwise he missed gimmes, and got outmaneuvered to the degree Acy stole some minutes from him in the second half.

Stats: 19min 4pts (0-7, 0-5, 4-4) 4reb 2ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Belinelli ( F ) -- Okay, no. In most bad Marco games he still comes up with a characteristic little push, normally after halftime. A few shots hit at key times. Not this time. This time he couldn't have found the ocean if he were sitting in a liferaft in the Pacific. Part of the problem is that he was probably going to struggle anyway, and then the Hawks compounded things by siccing Thabo Sefalosha on him and treating him like he was an actual danger. the only thing that went right the whole night was Marco running the end of 3rd quarter play well to get Kosta a little hook to close the quarter. That's not nearly enough to avoid an F.

Stats: 16min 3pts (1-5, 0-0, 1-2) 0reb 0ast 1stl 0blk 1TO
Collison ( D+ ) -- Got his D plussed for basically a single superior hustle play in the mid 4th, when he dove full out like a defensive back or soccer goalie to pick off a perimeter pass as the whole team got into the scrappiness. But for most of the game was losing his battle vs. Schroeder, and trying too hard in the process, forcing wild drives. Any thought of going wild and bumping this all the way up to a C- dissipated when he got intentionally fouled (and you know what BTW, I don't think he did -- he tried to avoid the foul with speed, and I don't think Schroeder actually touched him, and they gave the Hawks the call anyway when we should have been able to dribble the game out). In any case they called it a foul, and he went to the line with 2 seconds left and a chance to seal the win by hitting both FTs. Instead he bricked the first, opening up the chance for another miracle three at the buzzer against us to force OT. Fortunately nothing came of it.

Stats: 11min 4pts (1-2, 0-0, 2-2) 1reb 0ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
Acy ( B+ ) -- you won't find it in the numbers, but easily our most effective bencher on the night. Got a minute at the end of the half to save Cuz from a 3rd foul. But the key stint was when he came back in back in in the late 3rd for WCS and was not Koufos. Because Kosta had shown no ability to handle Milsap and had looked like a fish out of water all night. Acy did leak out and get a dunk, but that wasn't really relevant. What was relevant was him bodying up Milsap in a good physical matchup, and then causing havoc inside for the Hawks on the offensive glass. He didn't get any -- indeed he's small and not a very good rebounder. But he was very active banging around, and he drew loose ball foul after loose ball foul on the Hawks as they struggled to contain him. In the end I'm not sure it contributed much, as I think there may only have been 1 time we got to the line by getting into the penalty so early, but it was still a factor.

Stats: 1min 0pts (0-0, 0-0, 0-0) 1reb 0ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
Anderson ( INC ) -- Just a few seconds before half to try to stop the Haws on their last possession.

Great win!
Missing Rudy Gay against full squad Atlanta, leader of the Southeast division with 26-17 record. Getting next to no help at all from the bench, on a 2nd night of a back to back against a team we didn't win since 2008.
And still, with lots of defense, effort and hustle we manage to get the hard win.
Best win of the season so far, IMHO.
That was great. GO KINGS!

We seem to have a much needed energy squad with Ben, Casspi, WCS, and Acy. If they give nothing else, they bring much needed energy. It balances the intense Cuz and Rajon and the emotionless Gay, Belinelli, and Koufos.

Look at Omri punching Cousins for being a cancer.

TRADE HIM!!!

Was there, was a great team win, the starters and the bench missed lots of shots but they all played well. Exciting and never lost confidence in our guys. They even looked like they were having fun. I sure did. Streak? As long as they win two out of every three games I couldn't care less. But let's go ten n a row just for kicks. Katie and Doug and the rest on the radio after the game were not only upbeat, they felt this was a watershed win for the team. You know, I think they're right.

DMC and WCS are dynamite and Rondo is playing great we might finally have a legit big 3 of DMC/Rondo/WCS.

I have been saying for weeks Karl has to find a way to play Acy he finishes around the rim, makes free throws and we need every last drop of energy from him/Casspi/Ben and WCS. Less Marco/Kosta more Ben and Acy (play Casspi @SG).

We beat a team that's violated us for years with hustle and energy well done to the Kings, that's my favourite win of the season.

2 games where WCS logs big minutes, we hold opponents to 88 points on 41% shooting and 93 points on 35% shooting. Don't think that's a random coincidence as more data will start to back up how much he can make an impact for us defensively. We'll see about the rebounding numbers though as the Hawks and Lakers are literally the two worst rebounding teams in the NBA. But I don't see any reason he wouldn't be a 7-8 rebound guy in 30 minutes.

Really enjoyed Ben's effort tonight. It's so much fun watching when he gets out of his own way and realizes he's one of the most athletic guys in the league. That chase-down block was a perfect example... just very few guys who can make that kind of athletic play.

He needs to shoot a little better, but I'll take this kind of game from Ben any day of the week.

This was such a sweet win!!! I feel good when BenMc is starting to show what he can do. Nobody really questioned Willie before, but he too is starting to shine. Love his gliding across the floor. The future looks good and I knew it was there all the time. There might be some set backs here and there, but you have to keep your focus on the end result.

Im glad George finally realized what this forum saw months ago, playing a full sized lineup (Ben,WCS) is the best lineup this roster can put out there. Only took him countless losses to finally go away from the automatic Darren and Rondo closing lineup. I think someone (Vlade) got in his ear and finally got him to realize that small ball is fine in spurts but your main defense-first lineup should be the focus, Especially with Rudy/Rondo/Cuz who are more than capable of generating enough offense.

Hopefully Vivek saw that it doesn't take dunks, crazy 3s or fancy handling for Sacramento fans to get excited, we appreciate heart, hustle and defense too. Anything that leads to WINS.

Rondo's brilliant coaching in the crunch time:

really loved Ben & WCS' effort tonight.

I had to back up the replay on that and mute it so I could do a voice over as Rondo.

"Boogie! Go over there. No, not there. THERE! GET THE **** OVER THERE!"

"OMRI! Why the hell are you moving?! Get your *** back where I told you to be. Over there. OVER THERE! If they hit a three because any of you mother******* aren't listening to me then so help me . . ."

True. As a fan base we appreciate effort and fundamentals. But Rondo throwing alley-oops is awesome. And Ben racing back to make athletic blocks is awesome too. This team can be effective AND fun to watch. At their best, when they are moving the ball and playing with energy they absolutely are. Hopefully we're going to start to see the wins pile up as the team understands what they need to do night in and night out.

indeed. it's obviously a tiny sample size, but for a kings team that has performed so poorly on the defensive end, it's becoming fairly clear just how much the six-week absence of their rookie actually hurt their nightly competitiveness. now we just need george karl to recognize that a cousins/cauley-stein pairing in the front court can lock down the paint just fine without help, and convince his guards not to sag off opposing three point shooters so often...

Things I love about this game:
4 Big rotation min Cuz 39, WCS 30, KK 15, Acy 12 - Best defensive game from 3 of the 4 Bigs, Acy got key Team fouls on Atl (And no Rudy at the 4!)
Ben finally got some consistant min - good Defense
Rondo/DC totaled 53 min , Which means only 5 min of the backcourt of the two
Atlanta forcing a slower pace, Karl responded with defensive players and no small ball?

I Love this team !!!

DC stealing the ball while landing on the floor like a dead log was probably the best steal I've ever witnessed during my time on Earth.

Thank you DC.

That was good, for sure, but I'm still partial to Jon Barry's behind-the-back no-look steal in transition. He was hustling back and saw the man up ahead get ready to receive and just blindly threw his arm out behind him - full on stopped the ball and got possession.
