[Grades] Grades v. Grizzlies 4/8/11

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Just a fugly fugly game. Fugly enough its going to be hard to be fair about the grades, because fair is realizing that we hung around all game, charged down the stretch, and had several real opportunities to win this game in the final minute. And this against a playoff team, on its home floor (where they are 29-11), and desperate to get the win to secure the playoff bid. In other words fugly or not we gave a good account of ourselves. Just was painful on the eyeballs to watch.

No theme.

Sorry for delay again...busy time of year.

Official Boxscore

Garcia ( D- ) -- another night without much production out of our startign SF. Gave us absolutley NOTHING again in the first half, and on the ngith did nothing much other than just spot up to chuck threes. 7 of his 8 shots were from behind the line, which makes more sense when you make more than 2 of them. Both this hits came in the early third when briefly he gave us a lift, but then there was a dumb rushed three ahead on the break with nobody underneath again, he chipped in with 0rebs 0ast 0stl 0blks, and it was Donte doing the far better job for us down the stretch. A player with his uses and vet lockerrooom guy, but has made little argument for himself for next year with his play down the stretch.

Cousins ( INC ) -- a lost evening ruined by foul trouble, and never had any chance to settle in and make any impact, and I think it showed in the fugly nature of our offense -- sloppy he may be, but DeMarcus's emergence as one of the creative pillars of our offense has been as big a factor as anything in our superior ball movment in the last month+. Take him out, and it got scruffy. Hit a jumper early, but otherwise got whistled for a touch foul on the very first pay of the game, and with the fouls racking up got all of 8 minutes of first half action. Picked up his 4th almost immediately in the 3rd quarter, but we just decided to leave him in rather than calling the whole night wasted. Did a solid job challenging Gasol physically without getting #5 for a few minutes, and briefly was able to help with out passing by setting a few people up, but then picked up #5, left the game, and never returned. I called this an incomplete in order to avoid having to call it either a D (because he was a victim somewhat) or F (as obviously one of his least productive games of the year).

Dalembert ( B ) -- not too often that your center gives you 17pts 16rebs and you just shrug about it and start picking nits. Was trying to do too much early and fumbled away a couple of turnovers. Worked his way into the game using his length to score on littler turnarounds inside, but just looked a little sluggish out there in the first half, a step slow, not catching cleanly etc. A number of offensive tips late in the first half, but could not get may of them to go over (as responsible as anything for the poor shooting percentage). Racked up numbers but more just solid. Again not able to do much with Zach, as our big frontline which has terrorized many teams jsut does not seem to have an answer for Randolph, and of course he and Gasol are one of the leage's toughest, if stubbiest, pairings themselves. Kept on peppering in those little short range jumeprs after half and the baord numbers began to mount. Came up with the huge steal off of Randolph at the 2:40 mark to key us on the push to try to win it. But made a mistake on him with less than 50 seconds to go, letting him slip to the rim and having to foul him from behind. Its 17pts 16rebs, and that should never bedisrespected, but it was far from his best 17 and 16.

Thronton ( C- ) -- slumping? Maybe. Uncomfortable in role? Maybe. But tonight you could also add a bit selfish and dumb in what was a step backward for our late season offense. Used his athleticism for a little burst of early game productivity, attacking the rim and working inside like a very small PF. But then largely disappeared, and completely blew the end of first quarter play, taking his shot with 8 seconds to go when there was only 1.5secs difference on the clock. Math majors we are not. Wasn''t doing the other thinds, and despite leading us in first half shots, seemed like we could not consistently find him. Was also getting visibly frustratred when passes were going to other, less competent Kings, on the break, and I've mentioend before that while his competitiveness is great, that sort of body language is not good for a team. Especially not when you yourself are taking 23 shots on the night. Missed and missed some more in the third. Had one good unselfish setup of THompson taht stood out, but otherwise really began to just slam the ball down inside again and again, and get denied again and again. Defense not there in the 4th, but stil threated to be the hero when he stepped up to hit most of our big shots in the clutch. Had a three, a tough inside flip after he grabbed two offensive rebounds, then hit a bank shot. But on this night no hero stories wer going to be written, adn despite the attempt at heroics, the lasting image is going to be of him coming out of the timeout at the 10 secodns mark and throwing up an airballed heavily contested three almost instantly. I have no idea if that is what we drew up or not, but with all 5 of the players on the floor for us at that time able to hit threes, having Marcus quick shot a chuk with a hand in his face could not have been the best option. Kind of an angry and uncomfortable looking game.

Two or three opportunities to either tie the game or take the lead and we can't do it once? FAIL!

Beno sounds pissed with the lack of ball movement. I don't blame him.

You think Thornton going 2-14 in the 2nd half is part of it? Fair amount of selfish play tonight.

i agree. big step backwards tonight. Maybe it had to something to do with demarcus cousins barely being on the floor. This is why we do still need a point guard, or at least until cousins learns how to stop picking up 5 fouls every single game.

Very disappointing. This loss has pissed me off more than others. Why do they forget the way to play that brings them success? Beno says it all in the above video that mac posted. Also, why keep shooting 3s when they're not falling?

Yeah he does sound pissed. He mentioned in particular the last 3 minutes of the game. Wasnt that about the time when Tyreke came back into the game? Prior to that, there was the line up of Beno-Thornton-Greene-JT-Dalembert. They made a big run and brought the Kings back into the game cutting the lead to what 2 or 4 points? These Kings, with Tyreke in particular, will have to work on executing a consistent offense, not just in the late game, which is where execution really matters, but throughotu the entire game.

Tyreke came back into the game at the 5:32 mark, replacing Thornton (we were down 10 at the time btw). Thronton returned at the 3:25 mark replacing Thompson (we were down 7).

Should note selfish or not, and there was a lot of it, that was the crew who twice cut it to 2 and had multiple game tyiing/winning opportunities in the final minute.

Time for the weekly Tyreke is terrible v Tyreke is a star in the making arguments.

Gamely?

Anyways, with Reke and Thorton, we have two great players who are both good passers, yet have some selfish/bad habits. Reke always plays wonderfully until the final 3 minutes, then when the game is on the line he decides he needs to do it himself, which often leads to him driving into the D and blowing it. There are maybe 3 or 4 players in the league who are able to take over games, and Tyreke isnt one of them (yet!).

I almost think this team needs a hardass disciplinarian coach. Might be good for our young guards, but then again Cousins would probably defect. I remember earlier in the season, Westphal sat Reke through the final minutes of a close game, I actually think a tighter leash in close games would do a world of good for the team and for Reke's game. Gotta nip these bad habits in the bud.

Once Reke figures out that driving into five guys and chucking up a prayer wont work.... He's golden. But as of now that is a pretty big wart. Remember how Martin always used to try to flop his way to victory? This is basically the same thing, just a slightly different method.

Disclaimer: Before all the Tyreke apologists get mad at me... I'm not blaming the loss on Reke. Yes I know he's young. No, I dont want to trade Reke for Curry. I dont want to trade Reke period. Just want him to play 4 quarters of good ball, as opposed to 3 1/2 quarters of good ball. I'm optimistic that he can figure it out, but I really think he needs strong coaching.

The problem is compounded by us not executing well by setting good screens, and the guards (such as Tyreke) not using the screens properly. As a result he's always just using crossovers to try and beat his man inside, or sometimes tries to split the double team. He lost the ball trying to drive in on several possessions, resulting in a Memphis fast break the other way. This happens against other teams as well.

What I fear is that opposing teams are already scouting this, and coaches are telling their guys to just double team Tyreke hard because he's probably not going to give up the ball. If we don't set good screens to free up guys, don't move the ball, then the offense becomes very very predictable. Some day that may not matter, but for now teams will simply dare Tyreke to shoot, and then challenge hard on double teams, knowing that Tyreke's just looking to get to the basket and then either trying for a layup or passing. Even the passing angles are quite predictable (can someone say guard the pass across baseline to corner 3 point shooter?). Same thing goes with Thornton. By not moving the ball and always going one on one, you're not making the defense react to the offense. It's like trying to run a 3 on 5 fast break with the defense already set. They know what you're going to try to do, and in the NBA that rarely results in baskets, especially on a young team where no one guy is truly "unstoppable"

Oh its definitely predictable. I called the "play" in the gamethread.

Our team seems iffy in a lot of the fundamentals. A lot of that is youth, dont know how much is coaching. A lot of vets that we've traded off complained about the lack of any systems here. And by a lot of vets I mean Noc and that guy everyone hated (Udoka? I've already forgotten that 13th man).

We've shown flashes of great ball lately, which makes last nights game all the more frustrating.

Ah well, up next the Dubs. If there is any team in the NBA that can help us get our offense back together, its them.

I wonder where a strict coach that has proven that he can get a motley bunch of players to run a consistent offense AND defense be had.....?

If ONLY there were such a guy available, with a proven track record of success, available to mold these Kings into a winning team!

If only!
