[Grades] Grades v. Grizzlies 1/21/12

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Momma told me there would be days like this...

Grizz appear to be a bad matchup for us. Allen takes Reke out of the equation, Gasol appears very comfortable against Cousins and is bigger than him, and really the key we would need is our third guy, Thornton, to really light up Conley. Has not been able to do that and so our top guys have all been neutralized and our bench contriubutions this season have been random to say the least. And our insistence on playing guards at SF makes us vulnerable against Gay as well.

Girls

Boxscore

Garcia ( C ) -- hit a three and some early hustle ubt was never going to have much chance on Gay given the physical disparity. Lost Gay on the backdoor to start the third. Some dumb mental mistakes throwing bad passes etc. at bad times hurt the cause.

Catrinel Menhia -- Romanian model

Thompson ( C- ) -- his positive roleplaying traits, hustle etc., are beginning to get overwhelemd again by the messy twitchy uncoordinated stuff that always holds him back. Made some nice hustle saves and the effort was there, but he just insists on flubbing plays for us on offense. The bad hands were on display, the fumbles and drops and bad touch on his flips blowing assists etc. etc. He tries to make up for it by going and getting his own misses, but when he's in this flailing every limb for itself going in every which direction mode it doesn't only throw him out of rhythm, but us as well. If he's given us a boost with dependable roleplayer play of late, this is the flipside that he can never seem to completely shed, and really, even though I snatched Speights up in several fantasy leagues after he got traded to them, there is no excuse for getting doubled up by him statistically.

Cousins ( B- ) -- numbers are deceptive here as his stats got padded up when we got another of those lovely throw your stars in during garbagetime and wait for the inevitable ankle sprain substitution patterns out of Smart. While the real game was still on had decent productivity, but the way it came about was more a display of his versatility than it was terribly impressive. Another big body inside in Gasol, and both the good and the bad of it that changes the entire way he plays The good of it is he's versatile enough to have an answer when he isn't the biggest and strongest guy on the court. The bad of it is that that answer is to retreat to the perimeter and shoot long jumpers, which he hit at a good clip. Nor was he even the best center in the game at that trait, as Gasol just started getting silly with his shooting after awhile and DeMarcus has no idea how to stop it. Wasn't a disastrous game for DeMarcus, but he got outplayed while it mattered, made some mental errors, and I think had something like 12 and 8 while the game was somewhat still on. Added some stats and a ncie pass in the late garbage minutes to complete the deal, and I'll let that bump him half a grade or so.

Thornton ( INC ) -- inability to take advantage of Conley early hurt as Allen checked Reke and Marcus had the better matchup but was just missing everything. Maybe we got an explanation a few minutes late, as after he went to the bench word came out that he would not be returning because that damn thigh injury he suffered against Dwight had tightened back up.

Song Hye Kyo -- some people may wonder wherer I find all these ladies, but if you were Korean you would probably know this one. As an aside, we are lucky to have her -- she was born deathly ill and her parents did not even give her a name until 3 months after her birth because she was not expected to survive.

Evans ( D+ ) -- the stats are deceptive here tooas whether it was the presence of Tony Allen, fatigue again, just inconcsitency or what Reke did not have himself much of a game. He didn't play in the true garbagetime so there isn't any real padding to the stats, but by the time he got going with any significant rhythm it was the late 3rd quarter and we were fighting to keep the Grizz lead under 20. Tried to make some nice passes to people, but from the beginning of this one felt as if he was pressing, and kept rifling passes too hard for fumblefingered friends like JT resulting in turnovers. Was overaggressive and playing a little too fast on his drives as well, and kept coming up short. In the early going Thronton was unable to do anything but gun up bricks and after the first taste oif Jimmerball it became clear that we are still having a problem there where we basically switch into a different mode while Jimmer or whoever does the gunning, and Reke is just a spectator. Did not have any real handle on Conley, but did MUCH better than Jimmer, who just got roasted alive, and would have been a better option seemingly. If he's not going to score, might as well try to get some value out of his defense.

Avril Lavigne -- somewhere along the line she got hot

Bench

Greene ( A- ) -- probably the best overall King on the night, and hey, you know what? He even logged some real time at SF this time out. Did nearly everything right tonight, and truth is that if we win this I might even bump this grade to a flat A. But in a major blowout...there are no flat A's. Anyway Donte gave us a major boost whenever he was in there. He brought energy and athleticism, but more than that he wa just always in the right plae at the right time. Ran the floor and everytime one of our passers looked up he seemed to be right on the rim, including when rim rattling dunk from Jimmer when Donte came flying down the lane on the break. Threw a great bounce pass of his own to Outlaw on another break. Continued to show his improved rebounding (although got outrebounded in his PF minutes). It was just about as solid in every respoect of a game as we've seen Donte play. Now game to game +/- is unreliable and at times flat our deceptive, but consider this: while there were obviously other factors involved, we got blown out by 33pts. During Donte's 33 minutes we only got beat by 8pts. Meaning that in the 15 minutes he wasn't on the floor we got beat by 25.

Hickson ( D ) -- no idea what happened here or why. JJ just didn't show up. Completely ineffective in his early minutes, and later when he had to try to giard Gasol, Gasol just completely ignored him (the size difference when the two were together was comical). 2pts 0rebs in 18min? Some of that is on the guards who often get more interested in their pretty little jumpshots than in feeding the post for us. But that doesn't explain the rebounding, lack of defense, or just general invisibility. Just a bad game. Only reason I didn't conisder an F is because he was not so much terrible as just not there. Didn't notice him hurting us. Just didn't notice him at all.

Fredette ( B+ ) -- and our other bright point on the night, and actually given Jimmer's struggles thus far maybe our most important bright point. There were a lot of problems here, but fort about 7-8 minutes Jimmer blew up and was a major factor for us getting back into this game. It started more of the same, with Jimmer passing up open looks and lookign unwilling to even look at the rim. And he was getting slaughtered by Conley, I mean just killed. But then a funny thing happened. We found him out on the perimeter and he hit a three. then we set a pick and he hit a second one. And another pick and a third one. And boom boom boom he was suddenly alive and so were we. It was actually the firstt/best time I have had a chacne to actually evaluate his game, since he's been so bad for most of the season there was nothing to even grab hold of (as an Ivy Leaguer I should say "of which to grab hold", but that just sounds stupid.). So what he did good: he hit back to back to back threes, and another jumper to close the half. 3 of those 4 were off of picks, and that looks to be huge for him. He continues to struggle to create his won shot, and the shooting percentages in this one eventualy plummetted back beneath 40% for him as the offense broke down. He also found a bit of an answer on his drives. he really has huge problems finsihing in there against NBA size, and gee what a shocker. How many 6'2" bigtime finishers are there in the NBA wihtout great quickness or hops? But what he did this time was instead of tryignt o throw up ipossible flips over 7 footers, he turned his drives into drive and dishes and began notching solid assists kicking the ball to corners and shooters at the three point line. He also notched a spectacular one to Donte on the break for a big dunk. Now, problems: first and foremost the defense. Oh my lord. The funny thing is that during the depths of his struggles I thought he was mostly doing alright defensively. And even here last night he made a few good plays anticipating moves and whatnot and getting in the way. But his man defense was just completely hopeless out there tonight. Conley torched him in epic fashion, blew by him basically every single time he wanted to at will, and it ruined us. Later in the game Jimmer was on Mayo, and guess what happened to Mayo's offense? This was a major down point that on the same night we finally see the Jimmer offense we also were reintroduced to severe defensive limitations that might have had him outscored on the night The other thing of course is that his big explosion all happened in about a 6-8 minute stretch of the first half. Then with Thronton out he started the second half and played most of the rest of the game, and went back to doing nothing. Was the burst a fluke that the Grizzlies adjusted to and just took away? Or was it finally the beginning of better play for him? Either way, at least he finally had one to get the monkey at least a little off his back.

Olivia D'Abo -- my little mention of Conan the Decorator in the last theme reminded me of her. She was a real cutie back in the day.

Outlaw ( B- ) -- played well in the relatively early going of this one, while there was still a game on. Hit a shot and ran the break for a dunk. But as we headed into garbagetime, and with the offense breaking down and rookie guards running the show, it became a fugly Travis Outlaw as 1 on 1 player exhibition, which is to say, not good. Side note: it would be nice if an atheltic 6'9" guy would grab more than 1 rebound a game at some point. I could probably outrebound him. In fact I'd probably give him a hip check for good measure so averse does he seem to physical play in there.

Caterina Murino

Thomas ( C- ) -- kind of a toughie to grade given how much garbagetime there was. Made a bad turnover after coming in, but it would be his last. Did a much better job keeping Conley on the perimeter than any of our guys, but you didn't get the feeling COnley was even interested in trying at that point, as the Grizz shifted their offense toward Gasol. Forced some dumb shots amongst the trees, and his inability to hit the three plagued him again has he's now 0-9 for the last three games. Thing turned into a near rout with he and Jimmer running the show -- at one point the lead approached 40. Nice dish to Cousin for a dunk late in the game, but obviously an irrelevant hoop.

Mila Kunis -- and I beleive there was a call for Ms. Kunis. Although I don't know why given that you know, dog and everything. Woof. Woof.

Might as well try this again:

Not as bad as the final score indicates. Not great offense by any stretch but if they continue to play unselfish ball all will be good from here on out.

However, Evans didn't show up tonight. Gets a a D-.

Mr inconsistent Evans is back at it. I'm expecting a similar performance against Portland, he's going to have Batum/Mathews/Wallace all over him.

We just ran into a buzzsaw. The Grizz are extremely good. They could easily be in the NBA finals this year.

What interested me in this game was the play of Jimmer and IT. Jimmer broke out of his offensive slump bigtime, but had huge problems with Connelly at the defensive end. When Smart inserted Isaiah into the game in the second half the Grizzlies totally went into a different direction with their offense and went to Gasol against Cousins. Probably knew they weren't going to have as much success against IT. But IT, like Jimmer, was pretty much a one-way player tonight. He couldn't find his shot at all. Cousins, meanwhile, was like a fish out of water, trying to guard Gasol 25-30' out. By that time it was too late. Overall, the game wasn't a big deal to me, other than the Jimmer coming-out party. It was great to see. Jimmer: Keep JACKING IT UP!:D

They aren't that good, but when you let a team get a billion free shots at the rim to start odds are, they'll heat up and bury you.

My explanation for Jimmer breaking his slump is seeing Josh Selby on the other side of the ball. Suddenly he realizes he is 40 picks better than the guy who's guarding him.

They could be that good if they ever get Gay, Gasol, Connely, and Randolph healthy and gelling at the same time. If they do that, they can beat anyone.

i didn't catch the game... how many picks did jimmer get today?

two of the three back to back to back three pointers, and the shot to close the first half. First three was catch and shootish, and added one tough drive in traffic. How many picks did he get on shots he missed? Do not recall. Still looks much better getting them than not though if that's what you're asking. Would seem like we would try to keep him in tight quarters like that ala a Bibby rather than asking him to create out in space by himself.

Jimmer got a lot of picks, but in the second half the Grizz switched their pick D vs Jimmer to having the big step out and take away the three point shot.

There are no girls pretty enough to make up for this one. But I'm willing to see Brick give it the old college try!

Grizz = A+

We did not play bad as much as the Grizz played about as well as they can. They were probably the best team in the league tonight.

Agreed. They were on fire, even the highly contested shots were falling for them. Some nights are like that.

When do WE get some of those??? ;)

And Connely was getting those shots at the rim because he is very good, and Jimmer just can't come to close to guarding him. The Grizz don't have a weakness. They've got the bigs, the pg, the wing, the defensive stopper, the bench. They are loaded. Personally, I would have put Isaiah on Connelly from the beginning, but if Smart did that we might not have seen a Jimmer coming out party. Maybe the Jimmer coming out party is more important than this one game. We'll see

That's what I'm hoping too. A little confidence could go a long way in helping Jimmer become a consistent contributer

Jimmer has been getting lit up on defense and his shots aren't falling but I still got the sense he was close to figuring things out. maybe now he can start to relax and just play his game.

Wasn't able to watch the game. Nice to see that both Jimmer and Donte had strong games offensively. If we can get three scoring options in the second unit and the first unit keeps the game within striking distance, we'll be in better shape than about half the teams in the west where all of the scoring comes from the first five.

thats what i was asking. when its a good one, it seems to free him up with enough space and time to get a shot off. i watched some fredette highlights on youtube and it seems that some of the players don't set good picks to free him up. the opponents are gonna have to close hard on him if he keeps shooting well which will free up his drive.

i'll watch the replay when its available online.

I think his drive is a huge probelm for him right now as he is just too small and vertically challenged and he doesn't have the speed to get away from guys so they dog him all the way to the hoop. It was a nice counter in college that may be physically impractical in the pros. But what he did for a while yesterday was use the drive to set up others -- the drive and dish. And maybe that's a combo he can be effective with. Outside shot or drive and dish, and hold off trying to finish over the trees as a last resort.

That's what I'm hoping too. A little confidence could go a long way in helping Jimmer become a consistent contributer

I like the fact that he took four straight shots. That's what he's going to have to do, be very aggressive. Hopefully, he will start making more layups; he's faking himself out on a lot of these layups.
