See? See? For those still watching this season a good game can still break out even this late. Its April, and April numbers get wacky for kids and scrubs, but maybe the best combined night for our rookie guards thus far (Ben first half, Ray 2nd), combining for 39pts on 13-28FG.

Cousins v. Portland this year:
Gm1: 35pts 9reb
Gm2: 33pts 12reb
Gm3: 35pts 13reb
Gm4: 30pts 12reb

I pray for 3 things next year: 1) that we make the playoffs, 2) that Portland does as well with the same roster; and 3) that we meet in a playoff series. Boogie might break some Wilt records.

Good losses as losses go. We being a bad team found a way to make the late mistakes to lose it, letting a team down 2 have an open corner three is...duh. And then our rookie decided that he was going to hero it at the buzzer. Well, should guarantee us our draft spot I guess, so we should be able to go ahead and win a couple of these final games without any further misgivings. Cousins REALLY wants to win these BTW. I don't even think its conceivable to tell him that we are going to tank/rebuild another year. Somehow, someway, we gotta break through this glass ceiling this summer.

Okay, some days off here, so I will theme this one. Theme = Cool Art

Outlaw ( D ) -- You know how a negative times a negative is a positive? Well, somewhere along the line somebody must have switched things up such that a positive times a positive is now a negative. I mean, it's April, Outlaw's playing in Portland...Travis ought to have had a monster game. Spoiler: he didn't. Outlaw came out with little purpose in the first half, playing bad defense and missing shots. He was lethargic enough that he came in for a whole two minutes in the second quarter, got blown around by Will Barton, and was given a one-way ticket to the bench for the rest of the half with no points, no rebounds, and one assist. At halftime Outlaw must have gotten the memo about the small forward spot being responsible for rebounding tonight, because he came out working in the third and grabbed four boards. He did finally manage to knock down two shots, both baseline pops as he was going hard right and one instrumental in our attempt to steal this one from the Blazers. But in the end, he didn't really give enough effort, he didn't hit enough shots, and he didn't play effective enough D to really make a difference in this game.--Capt.

Redhead Girl -- notice anything special about this photograph of a redheaded girl? How about that its not a photograph. How about that its not even a painting. How about it was done by Bic pen, by a Portuguese lawyer who lives in London who goes by "VianaArts" and just does them as a hobby. (S)he owns 8 colored Bic pens, and a black one. This entire rendering apparently took only 6 colors and the black.

Thompson ( C+ ) -- difficult thing to grade although generally I am moderately happy with it. Got the start, whether due to some alleged Evans injury which showed no effects on the court, or because he's 6'11", so is Aldridge, and he presented the better defensive matchup. Did hit a long jumper in the early going but great players will hit shots even if guarded, and JT wasn't effective in his main role as LMA stopper until later in the game, and quickly got into foul trouble. Nothing after returning until he picked up a ball swiped from Cousins and got fouled. But of course he then missed both FTs as he's entirely lost the thread at the line. Made up for that with a follow dunk a minute later as he was one of several Kings to really benefit from the attention focused on Cousins and be able to clean up around the open rim. Stayed out of the way in the third, but made a few little help plays to assist the big guy. A nice block to trigger a break, and then ran the court for Cuz to hit him with the pass for the dunk. Helped us buy time with Cuz out in the early 4th and made a good post move for a score. But a minute later got a three second call trying to post up again, and down the stretch the decision was made to go with Reggie, who was making more plays, both good and bad. Still, not a bad roleplaying effort. Stayed efficient, made little contributions. He and Evans kept LMA below his season averages, etc. Almost went B-, if we win, maybe I do. --Brick

Cousins ( A- ) -- Interesting night for Boogie. He had a somewhat subdued first half largely because the Trailblazers were double and triple teaming him anytime he had the ball within 20 feet of the basket. I can’t verify if this is true or not, but the Blazers broadcasters said that the Blazers almost never do this (I wouldn’t know, I don’t watch the Blazers when I don’t have too) and that in previous meetings this season they didn’t double him. This is, of course, why guys like Rudy Gay and Isaiah Thomas are important. Why not double and triple Cousins in this game? I’d leave McCallum, McLemore, Outlaw, and Thompson open too if it meant getting the ball out of DMC’s hands. It also shows the level of respect Cousins is gaining around the league. Anyhow, back to his performance. Like I said, his first half wasn’t very effective, for good reason, but still. It was pretty much mid range jumper or nothing for a lot of the first half, and his defense on Lopez wasn’t where you’d like it to be. There were just a lot of miscommunications and breakdowns anytime Lopez was involved. Cousins would slide over and help, and then no one would help him, etc. His offense, a long with the defense on Lopez got much better in the second half. He scored 8 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter, and kind of took off from there. It was an encouraging performance because he was able to score 30 points almost entirely through his jump shot. He rarely took it inside (and only attempted 3 FT’s as a result) because of the double teams and it was totally fine. We’ve seen this sort of game from Cousins before, and it’s a testament to how far his jumper has come. He had a few buckets close to the basket, including a couple dunks and offensive rebounds, but he was taking what the defense was giving him, and producing. His work on the glass was solid as usual, and his passing was pretty good out of the double teams even though the assists weren’t there. Strategically, I would have liked to see Cousins get the last shot (instead the Kings got a McCallum jumper) but this was a good, different sort of game by DeMarcus. --Mass

McLemore ( B- ) -- So one of the better games that we’ve seen from Ben in the last couple of weeks. The shame of it, is that it could have been so much more. He played most of the 1st quarter, and 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter (and 12.5 minutes of play) he was sitting on 12 points on 5-7 shooting. Which means that the last 20 minutes of play netted him 4 points on 1-6 shooting. *sigh* It is interesting as the game did not start out auspiciously for him, as the Blazers started the game with a 3 second violation, and Ben got the nod to put up the first shot of the game and he missed that FT. Fortunately that didn’t seem to trouble him, and on what would be a nice reoccurring theme, a minute later he would take the ball and drive it hard to the rim and finish. He was very aggressive in this one, taking the ball to the rim, catching and taking 1-2 dribbles and pulling up, and for the first 12 minutes he had very good success. Unfortunately towards the mid-to-late 2nd quarter he was struggling on hitting the open shot, where he missed 3 jump shots in about 45 seconds. He still wasn’t able to find his shot in the 3rd quarter, and since Malone was having success with a Ray/Outlaw front-court Ben basically didn’t play the entire 4th quarter. I dropped Ben’s grade a bit also due to the defense. Wes Matthews basically had a field day against Ben. He had success posting Ben up, had success running Ben through screens to get open looks, and had success on making quick movements to get open when Ben lost focus or turned his head. Matthews had 19 points on great shooting (7-12) and I think one of the reasons Malone didn’t go much with Ben in the 4th is that he wanted someone bigger, in this case Outlaw, to keep Matthews from posting in the interior. Ben also didn't rebound the ball ,and since he was looking for his shot most of the time, he only cashed in one assist. Fortunately he also only had one turn-over, when he pushed his luck a little too far trying to creatively dribble into the lane through multiple defenders. So good aggression through-out the game, great early shooting, poor late shooting, and not the greatest of defense. It’s better than what we’ve been seeing lately, so that is at least a bit encouraging. --Uncia

McCallum ( B+ ) -- Didn't play poorly for the first three quarters, but he struggled with his pull up jumper and wasn't getting to the basket with much success. Even with his shot not falling found ways to be valuable, while coming up some big momentum shifting plays in the process. In the early going his best work was mostly on the defensive end as he was making Lillard work while forcing a couple of turnovers, although it should be noted that Lillard was uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball at times. While his struggles shooting off the dribble continued he had no trouble knock down the set three pointer in the early going and somehow got a highly contested deep three to fall to close out the half. Continued to struggle with his mid range jumper in the second half, but got into the paint and made a nice floater after creating contact with Watson to give him self space to finish off the third quarter. Early in the fourth managed to attack the basket with more success, making a fading one handed shot early in the period. Followed that up with a nice transition layup and all of a sudden Ray had picked up some momentum. With his confidence going wasn't shy about putting up shots, which turned out to be a mixed blessing. We needed someone to help carry the load, but at the same time he forced several plays. Most egregiously a easy fast break opportunity where he forced the action and challenged Batum only to get the ball stripped. Luckily Cousins recovered, but he was flirting with disaster rather than making the simple play. Despite the overly ambitious attempts was a major contributor to the near upset as he knocked down a couple of deep balls with his feet set. Also had a nice two man game going, as he was consistently feeding Cousins every time they ran that little pick and pop play. This one came down to the final shot and I wasn't thrilled that McCallum elected to take it. Not that Cousins had a good look, but the opportunity to get him the ball was there. Instead it was another mid range jumper that didn't fall. Not that it was a terrible shot and without his play in the fourth I doubt we would have been in position to steal this one, so overall I'm grading this as a good game for McCallum with a couple rookie moments thrown in the mix.--Henkel

Evans ( B ) -- a highly eventful return. All night long he mixed in some of those great hustle rebounds with mistakes causing turnovers, traveling, offensive fouls on screens, 3 second calls etc. Durin the 2nd quarter I thought was actually exhibiting some of that veteran leadership stuff sometimes referred to, and was basically running the team. Had several nice little assists to our rookie guards to get them easy shots, and was directing traffic without the ball. Part NBA game, part NBA kindergarten class. Was back in to start the 4th, and with Cuz getting a blow, we immediately went to Reggie in the post to start the quarter, and he scored. Then gathered up a Cunningham miss and followed it to get us within 2. Reached out and took the ball away from Barton I think it was to trigger a break. Greta offensive rebound of a Cousins miss with 5min to go. Hustling around but getting loose ball fouls too. Left in to guard Aldridge down the stretch, swiped the ball away from him for a steal to trigger a break, and despite the size disadvantage got really physical with LMA, who is in the end a finesse guy, and stopped him on back to back possessions down the stretch. Unfortunately also made another mistake, getting a critical 3 second call at the 2:45 mark denying us a Cousins post, after which it did not look like Boogie even wanted to talk to him during the ensuing timeout. Felt sorry for the guy. And hope its not a sign of any fraying there as I would like to see those two be a bump and thump duo for us next year. --Brick

Williams ( C- ) -- If Outlaw came out sluggish in this game, Williams came out like Cousins had just snuffed him with an ether handkerchief (note: ether metaphor is not intended to imply clubhouse carcinogenicity). Two bad shots and terrible D were the extent of his first quarter. The second quarter started hardly better, with Williams missing an out-of-control spin shot in the lane and having two pretty ignominious moments. The first was when Cunningham came over to set Derrick an off-ball screen and Williams just took Jared's little "Do U Like My Scr33n? Circle 1 Y N" note and scornfully tossed it in the garbage. The second was when Cousins caught the ball in the high post and turned to swing the ball to the corner shooter - but when he saw it was Williams he pulled the pass back. Owie. But suddenly about halfway through the second quarter, Derrick started to find his rebounding groove, sucking down just about every offensive rebound available (he only grabbed four in that short time), got a putback dunk and some free throws, and finally was showing some signs of life. Williams came back in for the final 13 minutes of the game and again took some time before he decided to show any effort on D - he lazily allowed a (missed) Batum three, and then let Batum just drive right around him for a layup. His energy level came back up to get a good deflection on D and follow that up with two good plays in transition (once fouled, once feeding Cuz for the assist), but in the end double SF configuration for the last seven minutes or so just didn't seem to be the reason why we made a push to win the game. So the effort was inconsistent and the shooting was poor (along with the shot selection), but the rebounding was enough to pull the grade up a bit. --Capt.

Acy ( C ) -- Acy played 9 minutes tonight, and while there isn’t a whole lot to grade off of here, I thought he brought some energy to the lineup and generally looked fine. He had one dunk and a pair of free throws for his 4 points and didn’t really have an impact anywhere else. --Mass

Cunningham ( INC ) -- Once again struggled in limited minutes. Couldn't hit his open shots and has yet to show any creativity getting to the basket. We were also unable to hide him on defense as Wesley was easily able to out muscle him at the SG spot while Lillard was able to get past him with ease when he took over PG duties. His best play of the night was a steal from behind that turned a three on one break into a easy opportunity for us on the other end. Doesn't appear to be ready to contribute at this point. --Henkel

Here's my thought on the last play:

I think the high pick and roll was the right play. I wouldn't want anyone besides Cousins or McCallum taking that shot. That said, I don't think it was executed cleanly, eliminating a good look for Cousins.

Now, given that, Cousins was open and he could have taken the shot, but it would likely have to be a step back jumper as the lane was pretty clogged. I don't know if he could have got as clean a look as the one Ray got.

I get that he's our star and should have got the chance, but I just don't think the play broke down that way. A little more patience by Ray or a harder seal by Cousins might have given a different set of options.

I think the correct person took the final shot. I had no problem with that play whatsoever. It was a good look, but it just didn't fall for Ray Mac...

Not bad for a bunch of scrubs. Totally off topic but does anyone but me feel a little nausea that the players with the third and forth highest salaries next year are Landry and Williams? Can't blame that on the Maloofs or Petrie. Sigh.

I feel OK knowing that the Maloofs are not running the show. I think we'll be fine.

Technically if we keep IT, they will be the 4th and 5th salaries :D

The final play was fine it was on line just short. If he passed it back to DMC I think the shot would have been tougher. I say this though we played tough against a playoff team that's won 6 of 7 without IT/Gay and lost by 1. That's pretty good signs of dominance from DMC.

Perhaps it's just me, but I loved seeing DeMarcus' reaction at the end of the game. With only a couple games left to play and the Kings long eliminated from the playoffs - AND no IT or Rudy in the lineup - games don't get much more meaningless than this one. However, there is the team's best player pulling his headband over his eyes in utter disappointment to another loss. In this day and age, it is so refreshing to see a player like Cuz take each game so seriously - especially when there is nothing really at stake except pride. Boogie has a lot of pride and I love that about him. Talent aside, it's one of the main reasons I look forward to watching him play every single game.

Not really. The context of who we are as a team is insanely different from where we began the year. D-will made so much sense before we got Gay. Landry made so much sense before we got D-Will and Gay

You had a good post. But in this game, there were 3 dominant Kings, including DMC. The 3 dominating players for the Kings were McCallum, McLemore and Cousins.

Do you believe me? Here are McCallum and BenMacs' Combined Stats for the night:

39 pts
5 rebounds
8 assists
3 steals
1 turnover!

Plus they both had some strong, talented defensive plays.

They were game changers. Against the Blazers, in Portland. Great game for the Kings.

Nah Reggie Evans got us back into that game (and unlike Thompson contained LMA) him and Ray when Cousins went to the bench gave us all the momentum and turned the game in our favour than the 3 pointer happened. For a "match up PF" as some Kings fans refer to Reggie as he matches up well with 95% of the PF's in the NBA and LMA would in theory be a tough match up and he handled him.

Mclemore was good on offence got raped on D by Wes, I thought Outlaw was solid, honestly our offence or defence has not looked any worse (it's still garbage)with both Gay and Thomas out like I don't even miss them or even notice they are missing. Cousins was good wish he cut back on a couple jumpers and made that nifty half hook.

I really think we need to play Evans and Cousins for extended mins if we are not trying to tank.

We are most likely going to trade Landry or JT when the season starts. So I won't be worrying on that.
Williams' salary is not something teams would runaway from plus he is young.
But I would rather keep Williams than JT or Landry.
We can even get rid of both JT and Landry if we can get a good front court partner to DMC and the beard bros.

BTT! The last few games are awesome for Ray and now we finally see why PDA and Malone was so high on him.

I know a lot of people think Ben's ballhandling should be the main focus of his offseason, but if you ask me, I'd like to see him improve his footwork coming off of curls for jumpers. His ballhandling is definitely his weakest point, but shooting off of screens is going to be his bread-and-butter in the league; his ballhandling may get better but it'll never be the biggest threat in his arsenal. If Ben can't become elite at shooting coming off of curls, we just used a #7 pick on Raja Bell.

I wish I had stats on Ben's shooting for March and April, but I'm going off of memory when his feet are set his jumpshot is elite. But when he's running off screens, curling, catching and shooting his footwork gets messed up. He needs to watch a lot of tape of Klay Thompson and Ray Allen over the summer and then work hard at being consistent with his footwork.

Well couple tings are clear: Boogie seriously want to win now, next season PDA needs to turn his interim trade chips into a competitive roster and figure out how to either make Rudy stay or bring in an equally talented #2. Secondly there is not much doubt that Ray Mac is here to play ball. I am not sure he is quite ready to lead a playoff team (yet) but he can bring it and do his part. I have to say this is the first time in YEARS I am actually looking forward to the off season with a sense of optimism.

I'm not feeling it. I need some more of what you've got.:) I'd like to know what the chips are. Not Gay. Maybe Isaiah, and then you're left with..? It's doubtful you get a comparable talent, given the restricted FA situation. Then you've got D-Will, McLemore, McCallum, Outlaw and R. Williams and whatever. Maybe the #1 if they get around the conditions, but that pick is looking less and less valuable, barring a lightning strike. Gay is the financial weight around the orgs neck right now. If somebody sees how there can be a major upgrade in personnel, please feel free to share.

Look at our roster at the start of the season, then look at it now. I have been anything but a PDA supporter but there is no doubt that the team is more talented now than it was at the start of the season. In a lot of cases the talent may not always fit together well but that is what makes many of our guys (D Will, JT, Outlaw, IT) trade bait. Free agency has never really been the Kings friend anyway, it will be through trades and drafts that this roster can be rounded out. Assuming we keep Rudy then we will be looking fora play making PG, a rim protector and an outside defender. One we might draft the other two will have to be traded for, but I suspect this off season several teams will be shuffling line ups and deals will be there to trade scorers for defenders.

Major upgrade? Maybe not. Significant upgrade? Sure. FO beats their butt off find one player in the off season - a veteran SG with some key talents - defense, ball handler, passer, sure handed, experienced, can do a little scoring, by implication - tall (6-6 or plus). Asking for a lot? Yes but why not. Teamed with IT, Gay, Cuz and either Evans or JT with Ben, Ray and a few others that are left or drafted or found under a rock we would have an interesting and much better team. As a matter of fact I would consider that a major upgrade. Fit money-wise? I think the FO is up to that. It can be done. So let's do it!

I am reminded of what Danny Ainge did with Boston in '07-08. tanked looking for Oden. When that didn't work he still had the #5 pick in a deep acclaimed draft, as well as the stacks of talent and picks had had piling up. Cashed them in to turn them into two veteran stars to surround his existing star with.

I am not saying we are going to do that. I am also not saying its impossible.

People always like to limit their possibilities with sacred cows, but here is a complete listing of everything that I would consider an asset:

IT re-signs
IT sign and trade

Rudy stays
Rudy opts out, stays at lower $$ figure, we gain 5mil+ cap space
Rudy opts out, we sign and trade
Rudy opts out and leaves, we gain $19mil cap space

Ben McLemore (20yr old former #7 pick)
Derrick Williams (22yr old former #2 pick)

#1 pick in the draft, approx. #7 (kept or tradeable only to Chicago in exchange for releasing the future encumbered pick)
Note: if you did release the encumbrance, then 2016, 2018 etc. picks become tradeale too
#2 picks

Jason Thompson contract
Carl Landry contract
Travis Outlaw contract

I consider the following assets too good, too cheap, without enough trade value, and having the right defensive/toughness focus to consider trading. Worth more to us than the other guys:
Cousins
McCallum
Evans
Acy

Now the real keys to radical reinvention are #1 unencumbering that pick if we don't want to add another kid; #2 IT decision; #3 Rudy decision

Those are our three most talented and potentially valuable pieces, whether they play for us next year, or somewhere else. But other things are possible too. You look for unhappy payers, unhappy teams, crumbling teams looking to rebuild etc.

I don't think we're all that bad off if IT and Rudy both sign elsewhere. McCallum is steady and competent at PG. Ben is starting to look like he recognizes his role and is doing a better job lately of playing to his strengths. Cousins is more than capable of leading the offense all by himself. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think we actually need another alpha-male shot creator out there on the perimeter to compliment him. Ray McCallum is not going to be mistaken for Steve Nash, but the balanced offense we implement when Gay and IT aren't dominating the ball has resulted in better shots. We're not winning games yet, but TOs are way down. That's an encouraging sign.

Some of the early returns of the youth movement...

IT started 52 games for us this season. He averaged 21.7pts 6.9ast 3.2reb 3.1TO (in those 52 games).
Ray has started 9 games this season. He's averaging 14.4pts 7.2ast 3.6reb 1.8TO (in those 9 games).

Ray is contributing less in the scoring department, but he's taking care of the ball. That's not really a criticism of IT, it's more of a pick your poison. Higher TO numbers are characteristic of iso-style offense. I like to look not just at A/TO ratio for PGs, but also Stl/TO. Thomas' 162 TOs are somewhat mitigated by 67 steals. McCallum has just 17 TOs in his 9 games as a starter and he's balanced it out with 15 steals. That's a really simplified way of saying he's holding his own on defense, or at least not contributing to the TO disparity.

Here's another one for the small sample size police...

Rudy has 93 steals and 221 TOs in 71 games as the starter this season
Williams has 16 steals and 18TOs in 13 games as the starter this season

I'd like to see a young group of players grow organically together and establish a team identity. I can see that happening with Ray/Ben/Derrick/DeMarcus and a young defensive big. Play fundamental basketball -- take care of the ball, keep passing until you get a quality shot, lock down the defensive glass, force the other team into tough shots, pound it inside to the most talented offensive C in the league. IT and Rudy are obviously very talented players but I feel like their respective skillsets are more of a distraction at times than a benefit.

Slow and steady development isn't a bad plan of action if the oldest guy in your core lineup is 23 years old. We're not going to be contenders overnight. This group can do most of the heavy lifting if we give them a chance to develop. Lose a couple highly contested playoff series maybe and then we can go out and look for some more firepower to put us over the top. That's a couple years away though. Let these guys build some confidence as a unit first.

I agree some of this, with the exception that I think the epicenter of our near term future is in the hands of Rudy Gay. Not in management's hands. He's the financial albatross because he can unilaterally opt to pay himself $19 million for next year, which is about 1/3rd more than he is worth. If you solve Gay, then the rest is relatively easy because you have the financial flexibility. I don't think the IT situation is as tricky because management doesn't have to resign him at an above market rate, as they do with Gay. In addition, I don't give much weight to what that #7 is going to buy you in terms of a veteran. If you're in the top five or six you'd have a lot better chance to get a decent vet, but at #7 I think we'd be in the 2nd tier, not the 1st tier of the draft. If we had that #5 like Ainge did, we'd be in a much better situation.

You don't think we're that bad off if we lose 2 of our 3 20ot scorers and replace them with highly erratic kids?

That just isn't going to fly now. New management looks at this as yr 1. Cousins looks at this as yr 4. You simply cannot risk another failed season on the backs of shaky youth. The franchise has moved beyond that. We are about one more failed campaign from starting to hear the KLove rumbles. Time is shorter than people realize.

I know it's unpopular, but that's exactly what I'm saying. I think a team built around these youngsters could, before Cousins' contract is up, develop into a better team than one built around three high-usage volume scorers. Cousins is actually better I think when he doesn't have to fight with the other two for shots. There's no reason why he can't average 30 a game in the near future like Shaq in his prime. Our turnovers go down as well because only one guy is trying to create shots against double-teams. One high usage, high turnover guy is fine. Every team has one. Three though is problematic. And we've seen that this season. When everything clicks we can beat anyone, but we had a negative assist to turnover ratio for more than a month. When those tough low-percentage shots aren't falling we're a mess. You have to remember, Gay and Thomas pretty much are who they are. Ray, Ben, Derrick, and even DeMarcus are just starting their careers. All of them should get better. And having all of them get better together could result in that elusive mixing factor that makes a team better than the sum of it's parts, chemistry.
