Don't Make Me Use The Bat
In general I remember the Cardiac Kids actually winning most of their tight games. We are more like the Cardiac Arrest Kids. In any case, once again we showed out there that we were every bit as good as these teams we have been playing...until it comes time to win it. Not a talent thing. A brains/experience/confidence thing. You just have to hope we hold it together long enough for things to finally click.

Okay, sorry for the delay. Theme we're going with this time is: Bad Photoshop

Official Boxscore

Greene ( C ) -- had a couple of highlights, including an early three again and a nice up and under finsih on a brilliant Reke feed in the mid-3rd. Could have had a couple more if Reke and Beno had been on target with their alley oop passes. But really this was just that meh game Donte has sometimes. Didn't really put his stamp on things on either side and never seemed to have any great amount of energy. After the early three, missed all of his others on the night, and ceded all of his late minutes to Casspi, who made a lot of mistakes, missed a lot of shots, but was clearly more dynamic tonight. I should say Donte ceded all his minutes to Casspi until he was inserted for the final play of the game, and involved in our final flub of the game, as Casspi drove the lane looking for the layup to cut the lead to 2 with 5 seconds left in OT and give us some sort of intentionnal foul, they miss one, we hit the game tying buzzer beating three chance at a miracle. But 6 feet from the hoop with the basket open and the layup nigh guaranteed, Omri suddenly decided to pass it to Donte, who was charging the rim looking to mopup if Omri missed. And Omri decided the best pass to throw in that situation was a 90mph fastball from 5 feet away thrown behind and above Donte. Wanna take a gues how that went?

Now this guy clearly IS Prince Charming. His princess is a three armed mutant but he doesn't care. This appears BTW to actually have gone to print this way, which is just remarkable.

Thompson ( C ) -- nice roleplaying job in the early game. Slashed to the hoop for a nice Cousins feed, hit an open faceup jumper. And the Aldridge numbers from this one were a bit deceptive -- we, and the we here means primarily Jason and Daly, had him bottled all night. He eventually got numbers late in this one mostly not by beating our inside guys so much as those inside guys having to rotate over on guard pentration, leaving Aldridge open at the rim. Which happens of course, but it is just to say that Jason was solid in there against him. Some good defensive boardwork in the third to keep the Blazers to 1 and done as the game turned into a defensive slugfest. But you began to notice something as this game dragged on and Jason's minutes piled up: he just quit being productive somewhere along the line. In 36 min you generally want to get more than 7 and 6 (and 4 assists) out of your starting PF, roleplayer or no. Had some misadventures late too as he missed the go ahead jumper at the 2:30 mark, and then got blocked at the rim at the 50 second mark as neither team could score and put the game away.
Beyonce-3rd-arm.jpg

Speaking of three armed women, I am not even really sure what happened to Beyonce here, or why.

Cousins ( D- ) -- ok, this was the worst effort we've seen from Cousins in weeks. And I do mean effort too. There were a couple of isolated hustle plays on defense, but his game jsut felt oddly..eak, for lack of a better word. Had an obvious power edge on offense, but he rarely used it. Rarely powered inside, even against he should have been abel to bully ball. Mostly content to face and go inside fairly softly. He was missing short ones, but then again, there was none of the power or interior niftiness that makes those things go. Did have an early highlight slipping in a tremendous pass to a slashing JT, right off the defender's hip and catching Jason at full gallop. But other than an islated big flush in the 3rd, spent the night settling and flipping up little Hawesesque prayers. And this was against a team missing virtually all of its shotblockers and starting Dante Cunningham in there. Indications are mixed, but will have to watch here a bit for fatigue. Remember this was when Omri hit his wall last year, and with the questions about Cousins' conditioing there are many who fell he'll hit one sooner or later himself. Lost all of his late minutes to Daly, who played a very strong game and stayed out there right through the OT.

Notice the shadow and reflection in the car? Hmm...what seems to be missing?

Udrih ( B+ ) -- quietly going about his business in the early going, and whle he wasn't really forceful, he was once again incredibly efficient and hit everything he took, and added a nifty spinning interior pass to Landry for the foul as well. Was giving a decent effort on defense agian and fighting through screens chasing his guys, Really solid play in the 4th and knocked down a three to get us to 7 up with 6:00 to go. Good hustle play to get back and break up a Miller fastbreak and keep it tied at the 48 second mark. In OT set up Reke for a trip to the line that tied it for us again, and nest possesion retied the game himself on a jumper. Just a really dependable game throguhout that just lacked a little punch. Was an asset pretty much all game long, but there ws no point when he just took over, and it wasn't the sort of game where we could just ride him down the stretch while chasing the victory.

The art of photoshopping women into grotesque parodies of themselves may have hit a new low here.

Evans ( C+ ) -- highly aggressive here in the early going, and looked like he had great confidence against Matthews. Made a couple of passes in the early that were great idea, but just poorly executed leading to TOs and missed shots. Created several turnovers in the open court as he harassed the Blazers bringing the ball upcourt, but was sometimes inattentiove on defense in the early going vs. Miller as he kept popping off screens. Started really pushing it down the stretch of the half, and eventually got an offensive foul for his effort. Made a great play to strip Miller at the shotclock buzzer with under a minute to go in the half, and played a very efficient half, pretty much either making his shots or moving it to somebody else so they could brick theirs. Spatterd in a handful of great drives and finishes in the ealry parts of the third, but was kind of alone out there as the game turned into a slugfest. I say game turned into a slugfest BTW because peopel pointing to that quarter or hald as an offensive collapse for us should not that Portland put up nearly identical numbers -- the game changed flavor more than one team or the other falling apart. Started drawing fouls in the open court as the Blazers were slamming into him to try to stop the break and slow the game. But after a brilliant drive and dish to Greene for a nifty finish, it began to have its effect. Drew a ton of attention and got quiet as he was willing to just move the ball around to others in response. Did not help that he, and we, still don't seem to know what to do when an opponent slips into a zone. Came up short on two threes, the second of which was a poor shot coming out of a timeout, but on this night never got into a bad rhythm forcing low percentage jumpers. Tried a couple, they did not work, and just kind of stopped shooting altogether. Not sure if that was better or worse. Made a few good plays and a few bad ones down the stretch of regulation, missing an open man but pulling up for a jumper to give us a lead back at the 3:30 mark, but coming back and getting intot he air for a bad pass turnover a minute later. Grabbed a big defensive rebound at the 1:45 mark and was slammed to the floor by Aldridge going for the same ball. Split a pair of FTs to tie things in the OT, but he big play there was when, wiht us getting the ball back doiwn 2 wiht 20 seconds to go in OT, Reke ran up court and took a poor shot, a challenged layup with 10 seconds still to go on the clock trying to be the hero. When it missed, we were finished. Note that if I squint I can almost make an excuse for that strategy (try to tie it but leave enough time to play the foul game if you miss), but I'm not going to. Was poor. Turnovers aside, this still ended up as a solid efficient statline, but the offense dried up as the game went along and with the game again there on a platter for us couldn't make the play to extend it.

Speaking of photoshopping women, did nobody at JC Penney notice that their photoshopper surgically removed this woman's lower jaw.

Bench

Casspi ( C+ ) -- good energetic first half stint saw him making a variety of contributions, taking a feed from JT on the cut for an easy finish, turning the tables with a nice dish inside to Landry for the flush, hitting a three in the early secodn after we had started to stall, and solid on the glass. Got pretty much all the late minutes at SF, and the effort was still there even if the efficiency was not. Showed his chippy side after catching an elbow in his nose from Cunningham and went right back at him nose to nose. Immediate response was good as he came back and spalshed in his second three of the night. Unfortunately that would be the last one he made, and down the stretch he becamse our latest young guy to show his age. Missed a three to take the lead at the 2:00 mark. Grabbed the d-board on the Blazers final miss of regulation, but then rather than calling a timeout so we could advance it to halfcourt with about 1.5secs remianing, turned took two dribbles and threw the 3/4 court attempt. Had a chance for redemption as he again had the game on his fingertips with 45 secs to go in OT, but his contested three just wouldn't fall, going halfway down and doing everything but. So damn close. Grabbed a strong d-b aord the other way though to give us a last chance to tie or win it, but Reke's failed layup largely clsoed that door. Largely I say because we were still trying down 4 with about 8 secs to go when Omri drove the lane, had the open layup to cut it to 2 and give us the last desperate miracle chance, and at the last second he decided to throw a bullet pass behind Donte's ear from 8 feet away for the game sealing TO. Good effort and spirit here, made a contribution on the boards. But so many missed shots and mistakes late that the grade got wrestled down.
germanbloodyflyer.jpg

Why would you hire a 7 fingered mutant as your hand model?

Dalembert ( A ) -- got a really strong effort from Daly in this one. Helped us with strong offensive rebounding in the early going, but picked up several of those goaltends on defense. Significantly impeded Aldridge along with Thompson as we could match his length. Damn near hit the half court shot at the first half buzzer. Gave us a major boost after he returned late in the third, just by not being DeMarcus, and played pretty much the whole way down the stretch Looking very lively with his legs, bouncing around on the glass, and got to the line several times. Nor were there any offensive struggles this time as he, and we, kept it simple. Slashed to the hoop and took a pass from Beno for a buzzer beating dunk at the 8:00 mark. And of course once again was playing great defense on Aldridge, blocking his hsots and forcing him into TOs. But down the stretch he was repeatedly being pulled off Aldridge to try to help on penetration, setting up Aldridge for offensive putback dunks. Great defense on Aldridge again on the Blazers' game winning attempt at the buzzer, forcing a tough miss. The Blazers tried the same thing at the 1:10 mark of OT, up 2 trying to make it 4, and he stopped it again, although he probably fouled him. Was in and out of the lineup in the final seconds of both regulation and OT as we tried to get more offense in the game. But when a guy shoots 6-7 on the gniht and the guys you keep on swapping in are 2-11, 3-7, 3-9, 3-8 and 3-13, I'm not at all sure that was the right play. In any case when a guy gives you 15pts 12rebs 2blks on 6-7 shooting in only 28min and plays great defense on the opposing team's main offense weapn as well I could not find a hook here to hold this back from a straight A.
a222_p7.jpg

Now that IS a vicious dunk -- he kicked that dude's head right off!

Landry ( C ) -- getting inside but not finishing in the early going. Got the dunk from Jeter at the third quarter buzzer and showed good hustle chasing down Matthews from behind to break up a break in the early 4th. Otherwise the late game was a long sequence of missed shots, being stonewalled, and turnovers. Gave it the old Landry try on the boards tonight, electing to avoid the scrum altogether this time. Works hell on the old manicure. Back in and damn near screwed up our 2 for 1 situation at the 30 second mark, pulling down the ball after he was set up for the open jumper, but getting bailed out by Matthews fouling him and sending him to the line. To his credit he bucked Kings tradition and actually hit the pair, setting us up for the tie and OT.
ottbloodyo.jpg

Could her belly button really ahve been THAT bad?

Jeter ( D+ ) -- ineffective in the earlty going, not passing, and his size got exposed on the layup attempt on the break as the Blazers mushed it in the open court. Got beat badly for the Blazers final score of the third by mills, but came back and raced the other way to set Landry up for the game tier at the third quarter buzzer. That was pretty much the solitary hgihlight thoguh, and this grade goes no lower simply because Pooh wasn't significant enough to warrant anything less in this one. Did nothing, but it didn't hamstring us.

Talent can only take you so far. Sooner or later, good coaching or real NBA experience is needed to close out teams. Unfortunately, we have neither.

F for whoever is responsible for a league pass broadband blackout for me in Seattle. WTF? because I'm 4hrs from Portland? I certainly don't get Blazers games over the air and I don't pay for cable. Screw league pass broadband. Half the games are blacked out which results in me watching them elsewhere online. I'm done paying them.

The Atlanta game was blacked out for me - and I'm in Michigan...

so disappointed. they really should have won this game. no oden, no camby, no roy...still no win. i dont know why im more disappointed in losing this game than the last few. i guess you know when you have that feeling? that this one is definitely a win, that it's your game to lose. well we lost. sigh

Not sure you can blame Omri for the botched timeout. Looked like (and Grant and Jerry said) that Westphal was trying to call one but was ignored by the refs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZT-4xahkz0

That's why the player has to grab the ball and call it -- don't know what was up with Westphal and the other ref, but you notice a ref standing right there 5 feet from Omri when he grabbed that board. Grab it, tuck, scream for a timeout.

Certianly wouldn't have been a guarantee of anything with 1.5 secs to go, but would have liked to have had that shot. You take our same players, give them all 3 years more experience (or inthe case of the vets making dumb decisions..er, 3 years more brains?) and I truly beleive we would have a winnign record over our last dozen+ games. But we do all the little things wrong.

thats kinda the reason you would blame him. the refs were looking at him and not the coach. if he would have called it, they probably would have given the time out...then again i bet if omri made the shot, the refs would have been "wait a minute i think i heard you say time out, take the points away" :p

So it's safe to say Beno has been our best player up to this point so far. Not saying much when it should be 13 or 15 but whatever.

Doesn't deserve a thread, but looks like Peja is going to Dallas, they have a verbal agreement. Good for him, and with Butler possibly coming back for the playoffs, they could go pretty deep if healthy.

Who has it been then?

Who has been better than a guy averaging 14pts 4ast 3.5reb while playing against secondary defenders when he's on offense because all the attention is elsewhere, and guarding the opposing team's weakest offensive player every night as we hide him on defense?

Maybe nobody. Maybe that's why we have 9 wins. But he's not playing the same game as the guys taking all the heat on this team. Nobody ever game plans for Beno, except maybe how to exploit him on defense. He has the easiest job on the floor -- forgotten about on one side of the floor, hidden on the other. And in the last few weeks in particular he's been doing a great job of that and deserves a lot of credit. Any larger claims need to be clsoesly examined.

At least on offense, Beno is our best no doubt. Who else has a game as polished as his? Who else has the number of options in scoring that Beno has? Thats what makes him tough to guard. The defense plays a part, but you cant deny the fact that Beno's skills plays a big role also. Hes one of 3 PGs in the entire league, and this includes the Rondos, Dwill, Nashs, etc, to shoot at over 50%. Then add to that the other things he does with the ball like passing, sharing the ball, distributing, and the off the ball skills he uses, and also his energy.

Of course offense is only 1/2 of the game, but at least on that end of the floor, Beno is our best and most consistent player right now.

Hmm.....

A few comments:

1) On the last drive in OT, Omri was NOT wide open to the basket.
He beat his man, and Donte's defender came over to block the drive. This left Donte WIDE OPEN with a lane to the basket. Heck, or he could have seen the play coming, seen his defender leak to cover the drive, and stepped back for the wide open 3-pointer. But he didn't.

The problem was, Donte was too stupid to realize this play was shaping up like this and instead drove to the basket like it had a million dollars on it.
Omri could not have known Donte was going to flash toward the hoop.
All Donte had to do was take the feed, and flush it down. He did not have to be 3 feet from the basket to score, when there was no defender there.
This flub-up was on Donte, completely and wholly.

2) Sam doesn't deserve a straight A, for 4 reasons.
2 obvious goaltending calls (he HAS to stop making 4 goaltends per 48 minutes), and the fact that he fouled Aldritch twice on both his blocks - they just weren't called.

3) Beno IS the best and most consistent King this year, and there's not even a close second.
Not because he's been playing out of his shorts - but because he's been playing right up to his potential, whilst all other King players have had incredibly unreliable, inconsistent performances all year long.

how could anyone vote on the First option in the poll? He was bailed out and made the two free throws, which works out favorably for us because it saved a second or two that wouldve been our two for one had we called a timeout after the missed shot by the Blazers.

In response to your first point IfAt1st, youre correct. Andrei Miller helped out away from Donte to block the lane for Casspi. In that situation, when Andrei cheated off Donte, Donte shouldve taken a couple steps back to get open and get within vision of Casspi, but instead ran inwards and furthermore clogged the paint and missed the pass. It mightve been better for Casspi to go for a shot, but he didnt and instead opted to pass. Donte shouldnt had run inwards and instead shouldve taken a step or two back to get wide open in case Casspi had to pass to him.

Late to the thread, of course, but the Hawks game was blacked out because it was on NBA TV. All NBA TV games are blacked out on League Pass, just like all ESPN games are blacked out, just like all ABC games are blacked out, just like all TNT games are blacked out.

EDIT - "Andrei" Miller? I didn't know that they moved Los Angeles to the Ukraine... :D

I voted for the first option in the poll, and I'll tell you why. Because I don't care about how he got "bailed out". He had a very good open shot well within his range in a situation where we needed a basket fast. And he didn't pull the trigger. Of all the four moments listed, it was that one that had me talking at the TV. Not the other ones, that one. So I voted for it.

Because the other mistakes were made by kids who haven't had the NBA playing time that Landry has had. Next year I'll be a lot more critical of Evans and Casspi.

Fair enough. I just thought it didnt deserve to be up there because it was a play that actually helped us out and put us in a better position to win by giving us the 2 points and the saved time.
