Minnesota has no interest in a bunch of MLE quality guys.
And neither should Memphis, they've got that already. This is actually good timing considering the recent news that Memphis is openly looking to move Gasol. They've got him signed to a big contract, so they may be willing to trade for lesser value if they feel strongly about moving him (think Chris Webber trade). On the other hand, they just got swept in the first round. They're looking for a leader. An all-star talent. I don't see anyone like that we should offer in exchange for Gasol. It's an interesting idea considering our size needs, but I don't think it's likely.
There are a lot of other players on Memphis though that I think would really help us. I don't really have much firsthand experience watching them play, but Shane Battier, James Posey, and Bonzi Wells sound like the kind of tough, defensive-minded perimeter players we are sorely lacking. Earl Watson is a good backup PG if we need to trade Bobby.
The performance of Miller, Bibby, and Peja in that last playoff game was good enough I think to feel reasonably good about moving forward with building the team around them. If that's the case, I think we need to focus on defensive role players as the key peices to pick up. One post defender and one perimeter defender.
Evans could be a starter and don't forget Kevin Martin is still developing at SG too and there will probably be a good SG prospect available for the 23rd pick in the draft this year as well. Bobby Jackson will be back as the key bench man and backup PG next year unless he's needed to work a trade (which I think is likely given his value and expiring contract) so that leaves PF as our one serious concern to adress this offseason.
If I could play 'what if' for a minute, Memphis probably looking to move Jason Williams this year after his comments at the end of the playoff series. They brought him in to attract fans, but he's no longer a star player and now he may have alienated the fans with his behavior. If they do trade him, depending on what they get in return, they may be looking for a starting PG. Bobby Jackson perhaps? I love the guy as a King, don't get me wrong, but this could work to our advantage if we were interested in acquiring James Posey or Mike Miller to play the SG spot. Someone else would have to be included of course, but for any trade to work, we have to have something that other teams want and this is one situation in which we may have just that.
