At the time the Kings were looking at a championship, not at developing talent. Wallace was a 19 yr. old freshman when drafted. Looking at the team, you can logically see why he didn't get any time. He was not at that level at the time, and was often lost.
It's good to see him grow.
Gerald Wallace was bi-polar when he was with the Kings. Great games, terrible games. Even great first quarter, terrible second quarter. Too inconsistent to garner a regular spot in the rotation on a team contending for a championship. Especially when he's playing behind Peja, who was a top 10 scorer in the League during Wallace's last season with the Kings.
On our team this year, and even last year, he'd be a great addition. I'd love to see him playing beside Kevin Martin, maybe even as a starter. But we had to leave him unprotected in the supplemental draft, and Bernie Bickerstaff snatched him up. Those are the breaks. And it sucks, because none of the players we did protect are still here, with the exception of Mike Bibby. And I'm pretty sure we'd all trade Mike Bibby for Gerald Wallace straight up.
This is only half true: we "had" to leave him unprotected because Petrie pulled a Dorian and neglected to sign Peeler to a multi-year deal, which means that we couldn't declare him.Gerald Wallace was bi-polar when he was with the Kings. Besides, we could have left Songaila eligible.

I'm going to go back to Wan Shi Ton, as soon as I can be arsed to dig my avatar out of my old computer. You should consider a short-term replacement of your Allen James Coage avatar with one of Dr. Christopher Duncan Turkleton, purely for obscure reference purposes.![]()
I thought you liked that trade?Or Webber. It would have been better for the Kings than what he did with him afterwards.
But he didn't sign Peeler to a multi-year deal. And even if he had, Gerald wasn't the consistent scorer that Peeler was off the bench that year. Not that I would have rather had Peeler, but he was much more effective in that 7th/8th man role than Gerald was. Gerald always played better in the starting lineup, and there was no room for him in the starting lineup when Peja was here. This is only half true: we "had" to leave him unprotected because Petrie pulled a Dorian and neglected to sign Peeler to a multi-year deal, which means that we couldn't declare him.

we didn't have the minutes for him. too bad the nbdl wasn't in place back then. we could have had him with actual game time experience.
My point is that he never won a spot in the regular rotation; Adelman continually played guys like Peeler ahead of him. He didn't have the type of offensive game that Adelman is comfortable with, which means he didn't have a consistent jump shot from mid to long range.Which is still all speculation. There are many people that don't want to give Wallace the benefit of the doubt, but I've never been one of them; I still think that the story of Wallace making up an injury is just a bad rumor.

I am in no way surprised to see what Wallace is doing now, and I could never figure out why we couldn't figure out a way to keep him. Perhaps if our organization was more unified and organized we would have used foresight. But Rick was not looking at the whole picture because his interest was in winning a title only. This is my take. Many of the fans knew that Wallace would turn into what he is today, it was kind of obvious. The inconsistency explanation is bullhonkey because almost all young players go through that. Rick must have known that, he just didn't want to spend the minutes to let him work through that.
Jordan's no dummy.
No time to do that when you're trying to win a championship.
"And with the 1st pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards select Kwame Brown."
Not saying that Jordan's a dummy, but he hasn't proved himself very skilled at building a winning team.
About the first, yeah, you're probbly right. But I just could never figure out why we couldn't select a few young ones (maybe one or two) to keep and develop as we went along. We're allowed to carry 15 for a reason.
And the second, sure he made that mistake, but I'd like to see how this Charlotte team works out.
