That's not the only place this rumor has popped up either. There are a few people talking/tweeting about Por going after Petrie. A lot will depend on how the Maloofs treated their own FO, and Petrie, while looking at Anaheim. None of us really know, but if the Maloofs didn't treat Petrie well, and left him in the dark, I could see him considering Por just for the stability, with the potential to go through this all over again next March.

Let's hope Petrie and the Maloofs have a good relationship, and that they treat their employees better than they treated the fans the past 5 months. If not, Petrie could force his way out.

This isn't even a rumor, though. This is a guy with a newspaper column saying he wants Portland to hire Petrie, despite the fact that he is currently under contract with the Kings.

If I had a newspaper column, I could write a great story about how the Kings absolutely need to sign LeBron James. End of story. That's what the Kings need to do this offseason. Sign LeBron James and all our problems are over. I could even quote three anonymous sources from the Kings organization saying that LeBron would be a great player on the Kings. See? It's going to happen!!!

i know petrie is under contract but didn't he resign from portland before? if he could do it there, can't he do it here?

Petrie has already had a falling out with Paul Allen waaaaayyyyyy back when they fired Rick. Doubt he wants to go back to Portland with the same owner in place, especially not right now since he's a few pieces away from once again proving his GM acumens.

We probably shouldn't treat this column as an actual news article either. If that were the case, every single European player in the NBA would be running around shirtless to please Ailene.

This was posted elsewhere yesterday, I feel compelled to point out that the Portland Tribune might be the third most read weekly newspaper in Portland. Not complete trash but an opinion/speculation piece may as well have been written by one of us.

This. Ignore it. That is all the attention this deserves.

I see your point, but I would hardly call Portland stable at the moment. They've fired two GM's in the last year and a half. Not to mention Petrie has already had his run in's with the owner over Adelman's firing when he was last there. So far all the speculation I've heard is coming from the media, and not from the team. So I'm sceptical.

If he did, he would still be restricted from taking another job until the current contract would have run out. Only way he could get ot Portland would be if both sides (Geoff and Maloofs) agreed to allow it. And that is not going to happen unless it be out of some incredible show of personal loyalty to Geoff.

They would sell him in a heartbeat.

I remember hearing little whispers about Geoff possibly not even following the Maloofs to Anaheim and possibly choosing to retire in Sacramento if they had moved, so, if those are even somewhat true the odds of him even considering Portland don't seem too great.

2011 minus 2001 equals 10. Yup, 10 years of overall crap moves.

How dare he draft Tyreke Evans, Demarcus Cousins, JT, and trade for Marcus Thornton and Samuel Dalembert all while simultaneously building up massive amounts of cap flexibility. I wish we had a genius like Kahn running our front office.

Douby, Beno, Garcia, JT, Rahim, Mikki, Landry, ect.... Its hard to make a case that this guy has had a good 10 years.

Its hard ot make a case he's had a bad last 3 years unless you don't understand how a rebuild works. There was a long bad stretch, but how that is relevant to today is dubious.

I agree somewhat, though there are some bad, bad Petrie mistakes on this roster. This is a nice rebuild but it is way too late. ONe could make a plausible argument that his inability to get into a rebuild is a huge factor in Sacto almost losing its team.

Also, given his signings track record, I do not trust him in how he will sign Dally and Thorton.

Thornton is a RFA. I could resign him. There's probably even a few apes who could do it. Make the qualifying offer of just over 1M, and either sign him outright or match the highest bidder.

One could make the opposite argument, too. Seeing as the Maloofs went hellbent on leaving as soon as the arena stopped filling up, they might have tried to bail 3-4 years earlier. That was a time before Sacramento had a serious will to build an arena, before the recession dropped arena build costs, before KJ was around to Energizer-Bunny the league into giving us the chance to get it done. Oh, and notably, before Jerry Buss signed a humongous TV deal that dropped by 10% if another team moved into his market and during a year when the expiring CBA doesn't threaten a lockout of the next season anyway.

In the face of declining revenues, the Maloofs keep quiet until there's some chatter at the All-Star game. With the Sonics in the midst of an acrimonious divorce in Seattle, the league takes only a quick look at the books and fast-tracks a move to Anaheim, 28-2 (Buss and Sterling objecting) with no filing period extension. In fact, they're just relieved the Maloofs didn't ask to move to Vegas. Mayor Heather Fargo lacks the NBA connections and perhaps even the will to put up a fight. Game over barely a month after the first whispers of a move are heard.

One can always make a plausible argument based on counterfactuals.

Just like every GM in the league, he has made some good moves and some bad moves. No GM has been consistent. I would argue taking his career as a whole he has made more brilliant moves than bad moves. Of course you are pointing out all of the bad moves and ignoring the good moves because you have an axe to grind for some reason. Complaining about someone is only useful if you have a better reasonable alternative. Who else is available to GM the team?

He was NBA executive of the year twice. This is not an honor handed out on a rotating basis. He earned it. He didn't suddenly hit a bad patch because he suddenly became dumb. If this year turns out the way it should, he'll probably win it again. He is making judgments on humans and humans are not totally predictable in their future develpment and in how they fit with a team. Does anyone remember Axelson? After the Webber injury, moves became funky but I'd love to listen in to the interplay between Petrie and the Maloofs. As I believe Petrie is basically very good at what he does, I suspect the Maloofs sabotoged the rebuild under the idea that they wanted to keep butts in the seats at the expense of a REAL rebuild. It was misguided. There are many ways of looking at the two or three year delay in the rebuild but no theory I have read over the years blames it on Petrie.

Douby was garbage...yes, Rahim was a broke down semi-big name that backfired...yes, Mikki...not sure WTF was up with that..., Garcia...well, he's turned into a great leader in the locker room...but mediocre as a player...yes, but Landry...not so much a bust, he turned into Marcus Thornton, Beno...not so much...he's been a rock the past year or so...and even if he doesnt average more than 14 pts per game...I think his value will be decent in a package deal for something more. So to recap...from about 2007-2009(pre-draft)GP was smokin' some good stuff...from 2009-present he's been pretty damn spot on! Oh, and in between all those bust trades between 2002-2007, he DID trade for that Artest guy who was pretty damn good for us, and he did get that Bonzi guy who...had he not listened to his dumb *** agent, would probably have had a couple more good years teamed with Ron Ron. Oh yeah, and lets not forget about that Brad Miller guy...who some thing was a bust, but his first 2-3 years here were VERY good and he gave us everything we needed/asked of him. Oh yeah...and as much as I/we love Doug Christie...but how many more NBA games did he play after we traded him for Cuttino Mobely??(who was a great help in our playoff run the year we had him) So not EVERYTHING has been a bust between 2001-2011. Yes, we should have been in full re-build mode probably ALOT sooner, but I'm thinking that wasnt truly his call, it was the Bros. Maloof...along with the Musselhead and Theus hirings. Geoff Petrie is still top notch.
