Gavin Maloof Interview (Regarding Personnel) -----

Gavin Maloof was on the AM570 yesterday before the game against the Lakers and I just want to give a brief summary of what he said regarding the draft, free agents etc.

First off, he stated again that the key to the future is Jason Thompson, Spencer Hawes and of course, Kevin Martin.

Draft - Gavin feels that people will be suprised how deep this draft is going to turn out to be and how many good players will be from this draft. Most people think this draft is weak but he is very confident they can find good players with our high pick. When asked which players he liked, he said he can't name names due to the collective bargaining agreement but he said there are plenty of all star type players. Interesting thing he said is that he feels we can do very well with the later 1st round pick we have and more importantly, that we should do something good with the 2nd round high pick that we have this yr.

Free Agents - Gavin said we have a good young core and with a possible #1 pick coming, we will get TWO free agents to help us get back to the glory days. He also said specifically 2 veteran free agents, which can mean something or nothing at the same time. So the point of this part is that at least this puts away the speculation that the Maloofs might get cheap and try to not use the money they saved under the cap.

Future - Gavin feels that its their fault for losing fan support. But he vows to get the team to win again because he knows thats when the fans will start going to games again. (So at least he is commited to winning and not just cost cutting.)

With the right coach, some luck at the draft, we can be back in business within 2 seasons. :D

I offer another interpretation. We have, what, 8 guys coming back next year, even counting KT? Three more through the draft = 11, so we need at least 2 more players to even be a legal team. I suspect that Geoff will be hunting for a couple of bargain bench players this summer.

I don't expect him to go after max salary free agents with the current state of the economy. Especially if we get a player like Griffin or Rubio in the draft, thats going to be our "star" pick up in the off season. If we get 2 quality veterans, I think we can compete sooner that people expect. Remember, JT and Hawes will only get better. Have some faith guys.

I guess we arn't getting Sessions this off season.

May I expand on your statement. The Kings will sign 2 bench bigs to one year Veteran Minimum contracts. Also, look for them to sign 2 undrafted FA, to minimum contracts.

That's 8+3+2+2=15player roster. And, will still be under the salary cap. $45M+$5.5M+$3M+500K=$54M

If Gavin said he "beleives its their fault", where the kings are right now as an organization, that is a step in the right direction. He isn't publicly calling out the coach or the players like he has in the past, but instead taking responsibility publicly. Actions speak louder than words, but it is good to hear him come out and say that.

Sure the Maloofs have made mistakes and hopefully won't make another one at head coach in the off-season, but I have never doubted their desire to have a quality, winning team. They miss that as much as any Kings fan, I'm sure.

Yup, they admit that the fans are not supporting because they are losing. And he said its their fault that the team is doing so badly. Vowed that they will turn it around.

Haha, I wouldnt mind bringing Ron Ron back.

Haters overplayed his issues. But we've seen what not having him on the team has done to our record.

I think Sessions should be the one and only guy we really go after though (that is if we dont end up with Rubio). Beno jacked Petrie in his contract year. We should try to move him if we can land Sessions.

Who would even want Beno and his horrible contract? I have a feeling we are not going to be able to get rid of him...:(

So you're saying that slapping your wife is "overplayed?"

Please feel free to defend this position.

He didn't slap her, if you read the whole report about it you'd know all he did was push her down when she was running at him with a huge frying pan that she wound up using to break the windshield of his hummer. That's called self defense, not something that's Kobe-esque.

1st off, if Beno isn't coming off the bench there isn't any hope for our future.

Secondly I agree it could take 2 years to get back into the playoff hunt, but I dont think Petrie and the Maloofs even want to wait that long. They are shooting for this next season. Atleast the 5-8th seed. There's no way we will be ahead of L.A, Denver, Portland or New Orleans... other than that I think our records will be close to the declining spurs, dallas and or Utah... with a very wise top lottery choice, and whatever veteran point guard they can get their hands on... there should be major changes this off season, which COULD mean major results.
:p
