Gary Payton?

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Encountered this little blurb in an article posted over in the NBA section from the Boston Herald:

While Gary Payton is starting and playing well, Ainge may be facing a similar situation with his veteran point guard. Payton has been an exemplary soldier but would like to be moved west to be closer to his family. His mother has been diagnosed with cancer and will start chemotherapy soon. Payton would also like a better opportunity to chase a championship.

Sources say Ainge is looking to see what Payton can bring from other clubs but won't give him away. It's possible that a first-round pick would be enough to pry The Glove loose.

Well now. Payton is from the Bay Area. On the West Coast Seattle and L.A. are pretty obviously out, and Clippers and Warriors are not contenders and would be highly unlikely to give up a first rounder for him anyway. That leaves Portland, who already have two PGs and are not a contender either, and then the Kings. Sitting in Sacramento perhaps 100 miles from dear ole mom (the only other possibility is a little disturbing -- Phoenix could use a backup running PG and is probably close enough, and the overall article was about a Celtics/Suns trade for McCartey. Would hate to see Payton added to that deal).

I am not a huge Payton fan, and I was mercifully correct about his failure in L.A. last year. But there is a certain logic to the possibility, and he's got an expiring contract and could play Bobby rental for us for the remainder of the year while chasing a title. Thing is I'm confused by the throwaway line in the article about how a first rounder might be enough to get him -- he's still got a considerable salary, and I am having a hard time figuring any reasonable deal that would bring him that wouldn't involve trading away our only shotblocker (Tag).

Why not ? He can handle the ball well and is a good passer , we wont need him to score... but how can we pull this off with our cap ?

He'd certainly be a step up from Eddie House IMHO.

;)

I second that VF. Payton's got a big mouth, but he would be a pretty good backup to Bibby IMHO. I would give up a player and a pick for him, NOT a first rounder tho. The Bench players I would not give up are:

KMart
Mo Evans
Songalia
Ostertag (to some degree)

Did I forget someone?

I could tolerate his act for the rest of this year to help us win. And wouldn't his yearly salary be halved since half the year is almost gone?

Well, we'd only have to pay half of it of course, but for trading purposes we'd have to find salaries to match the entire thing unless a third team could be involved somehow.

I think the Kings waived him in the offseason..........................................

End of camp actually, along with Blumenthal. Think those two guys were susposed to be the 11th/12th men this year (at least that was our apparent plan pre-camp since we gave them both contracts), but they just didn't perform well in camp and Barnes & Evans performed great, and Daniels good enough.

Does Gary Payton want to play for a west coast contender enough to shut his mouth and come off the bench?

come of the bench? maybe shut his mouth? doubt it. I think the chances of him coming off the bench are much greater than the chances of him ever shutting up. I'm not a big fan of the guy, but if he could check his ego at the door & come to play, I wouldn't mind seeing what he could do for us.

Payton a King?

No. Freaking. Way.

Mr. Attitude, the media would have a heyday. And he'd fall for it. If you think T-Mass was bad, NOTHING compares to the Glove's attitude (all about ME). Re: court semantics, How could he mesh with what we're trying to do here (or learn to do) if he's a defensive liability?

No thanks. Let's just continue the "flying under the radar" thang! Hey, I'm all for headcases that can play ball away from their personal vandettas, but the lack of respect exhibited by Payton is atrocious (see Lakers last year).

Just bad juju.

nah. dont want him. i gotta agree with albeitrue. it would definitely be counterproductive adding gary peyton's loud mouth and bad attitude to our current team-oriented lockerroom atmosphere and style of play. i honestly think the kings are set til the end of this season and post-season. i dont think geoff and co. will be making anymore major moves, barring further serious injury.
