Christopher Reina/RealGM - A source close to the participants in the talks told Christopher Reina late Tuesday night that New York and Minnesota are in serious and ongoing discussions about a deal which would send Kevin Garnett to the Knicks in exchange for Penny Hardaway and Channing Frye. Isiah Thomas, who has called Frye untouchable all season, is willing to give up the sought after rookie to land the future Hall of Famer.

Garnett has made it clear to the front office that should he be dealt, he wants to go to New York and that wish will be fulfilled if the Timberwolves decide to end the KG era and begin to rebuild. They reportedly respect Garnett and all that he has done for both the franchise and the area would try to trade him to his preferred team.

The question of if the Wolves want to move on without Garnett will be the deciding factor in whether a trade gets completed before Thursday.

This deal delayed last week's Knicks discussions with the Magic regarding Steve Francis and it is why it will be Jamal Crawford and Maurice Taylor going to Orlando for their first time, instead of Hardaway’s second. That deal is all but complete, but Orlando is waiting to see if Denver returns to the table before the deadline.

If the Wolves choose to retain Garnett, the Knicks will turn to Denver and Kenyon Martin, a player that Larry Brown covets. [READ]

just another rumor...but if both francis and garnett go to new york, i wonder what that might mean. i have no idea what those three could accomplish together, but if they could all coexist (unlikely), then it could be something explosive. however, too many shots needed between the three players, and neither marbury or francis is gonna wanna defer to garnett as the superstar of the team, which is what players need to do when they play with KG. dunno....new york sure is keeping things interesting, to say the least.

I'd be PISSED if I was Garnett

so would I. If minny is shopping Kevin, I would think he would have some sort of input in the matter. If not, he could be traded to dark, dark places.

Doesn't Garnett have a trade kicker or approval clause?

I can't see him agreeing to go to New York...but better there than someone in the West if it's not Sacramento.

Garnett wants to go to NY. It's a big city, he's friends with Steph, they got a good coach. Next season they would be a very good team.

This is Zeke we're talking about here! The moment Garnett steps on the floor in NY his had will fall off. Meanwhile Fry will turn out to be Garnett2 in Minny.

friends with Steph might be a bit of an oversstatement given that Steph basically bolted Minnesota because he felt the state wasn't big enough for both their egos.

I think Garnett wants to win, period.

Note the source of this rumor BTW. Could be true of course, then again Chris Reina is a website owner who posts some pretty ridiculous stuff at times.

^^
And he speaks of himself (Reina) in his article in the third person. I bleeping hate that.

;)

I missed the part first time around about KG wanting to go to New York. Hey, that works for me. At least it's not in the West.

KG in NY would be very fun. Be great for the Knicks and the city, and glad it wouldn't be someone in the West (other than us). If this is gonna go down.

Greg Logan/Newsday - Executives and personnel experts around the league questioned the odd coupling of Stephon Marubry and Steve Francis, and said Larry Brown was not in favor and suggested yesterday's deal was part of a risky long-term strategy by Isiah Thomas to trade for superstar Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett this summer.

One NBA general manager said Thomas sold Knicks owner James Dolan on a strategy to stockpile as many marketable assets as possible to make a play for Garnett, who has grown increasingly restless with the Timberwolves, who now might be ready to consider trading him.

Brown is said to have favored trading Hardaway's contract to Portland for center Theo Ratliff and small forward Darius Miles to fill the Knicks' need for more defense, rebounding and shot-blocking. But Thomas gambled on Francis, a strategy that could blow up in his face if Minnesota refuses to trade Garnett.

"Isiah has put a lot of talented players on their roster, but it remains to be seen if they fit together," the NBA GM said. "Chemistry is important. The Knicks have a lot of firepower, but Larry likes to play defense. Francis doesn't seem like his type. Larry wants hard-nosed players."

If Portland really offered Ratliff and Miles for Hardaway Zeke is an even bigger idiot that I thought. Why hasn't Brown walked out ala Rudy T?

that's an incredible risk to take, considering francis' salary (not gettin' any cheaper) and KG's age (not gettin' any younger).

the time for teams to acquire KG would have been this season or sooner, so as to maximize the length of his effectiveness over time. the time for minny to trade KG would be next season or later, so as to trade away an aging veteran with a large contract. his contract is substantial and he's played in the nba a lotta years. the wear and tear on that body isn't gonna do much good for a team when considering the long term. you still take KG if you can get him, but you would need to start winning immediately, because he's gonna start losing his effectiveness in the next coupla years.

i must admit, tho, a kevin garnett/channing frye pairing is scary. much potential for greatness, however shortlived it might be...
