Furillo: Time for Kings to get rid of Cousins

Finally, Vlade Divac suspended DeMarcus Cousins.

Now, can the Kings’ general manager do the right thing and get him out of here?

Trade him, cut him, whatever. It would be a steal if the Kings could get 50 cents on the dollar, a bargain at 35 cents and a good deal at a quarter. Maybe even a nickel.

From the Bee:

Andy Furillo has been a reporter with The Sacramento Bee since 1991. He covered mostly crime and punishment until April 2015, when he began writing a sports column. He believes art inspires in many forms: a Jerry Garcia guitar solo, Van Gogh's "Starry Night," and Madison Bumgarner's five innings of masterpiece relief in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series. Sport is art, and sport is fun, and it is filled with interesting people. Furillo hopes to bring out the best of it all. Contact Andy Furillo at afurillo@sacbee.com or 916-321-1141. He began writing a sports column in 2015? Another coup for the Sacramento Bee, snagging those experienced and knowledgeable sports writers...

That has always been one of my favorite paintings (and Doctor Who episodes). I refuse to associate something so beautiful (including the song) with someone like Andy Furillo.
It just seemed to fit our current situation lol.

But when its all said and done, I'd like to see us try to use what we have the way it should be used before tearing everything apart. But I'm afraid people may not listen and act in haste, which reminded me of the song, and the mental "circumstance" of the day.

That's a fitting bio...you'd have to be just as high to enjoy a Jerry Garcia guitar solo as you'd have to be to write this article.
Woah woah woah, let's leave poor Jerry out of this. There's no accounting for taste, but he was a musician's musician through and through.

A bit harshly put, but I agree with the overall idea. It's hard to get an equal return in this league, but sometimes it's addition by subtraction. Anything to get this franchise headed in the right direction, with a positive culture. This still remains the most important issue for the Kings to address. It cannot be ignored any longer.

Cousins is not going to be on the Kings next year. I saw the same media alignment pre Webber trade. These articles and radio pontifications don't happen in a vacuum.

It's done.

Let's hope. The right trade can be beneficial to both parties.

The "same media alignment" has existed for 6 years with Cousins. Impotent little talking heads beating on the glass. Not sure the Bee's circulation is still enough for it to even reach the glass actually.

Well, this wasn't predictable.

How often does it benefit the team giving away the franchise player though? It rarely works. The fact is, this organization has failed to build a team around him. All these great players in the league have teams that are built to at least win 30-40 games without them. Big time players add an additional 14-20 wins alone. Just look at the Kings record without Cousins the last two seasons. It's historically bad. Look at the net rating with and without Boogie on the floor:

Allow me to front and center that, because I can guarantee you people will try to ignore it if it doesn't support their argument.

This is DeMarcus Cousisn making the Kings worse and holding back his teammates:

"Less than a minute later, Cousins missed another shot from close range, thought he was fouled and failed to hustle back on defense – something we’ve seen before. The Cavaliers sprinted the other way and took three shots, grabbed two rebounds and finally scored on a putback – before Cousins made it past midcourt."

This play occurred at the 6:42 mark of the 4th quarter. After Cousins drove the lane and missed the shot and threw up his hands because he didn't get the foul call, TEN SECONDS transpired before the above sequence of events occurred with the Magic getting 2 points under the basket (at the 6:32 mark. Cousins was not past the half court line when the Magic scored the basket. He couldn't get down the floor in 10 seconds.

By the way, the play that preceded the above, when Cousins made his first frustration foul of reaching around and fouling the Magic player in the backcourt, was when the Kings were only down by 4 points in the 4th quarter.

I always wonder on these very public incidents: What is it we're not seeing behind closed doors? If Cousins is doing this crap in full public view, it must be a fun party behind the scenes.

Enough with the excuses for this guy. (The major excuse that we've heard for years: oh, but he wants to win!) Cousins needs to go. The Culture is toxic and Cousins is an integral part of it.
