Welcome to Sacramento and welcome to Kingsfans.com, Angela.:) I remember seeing you on NBATV a few times, and as a member of the media myself(not the local media), and someone who has worked for the Maloofs before, as well...I definitely respect what you do, as most folks dont know that transition and getting comfortable can be tough at first. You'll grow to love it here, and folks will love your work, too...once again, welcome aboard!

Welcome to the Kings and the Kings community. As long time Kings fans, who moved away in 1998 after 8 years of season tickets, we too rely on fans message boards and the Internet to keep up with Kings happenings.

My wife and I both enjoyed you from your first time on the sidelines on the air. Your clear and enjoyable delivery style is great and we look forward to your getting into the "swing of the Kings".

Angela,

Nice to have you on board. I have been one of your fans because, "You can't teach cute!":D Leaving aside the the all-important gender related aspect;), I really liked your conversations with Grant and Jerry. I think you shine in that type of forum, which is more like the pre and post game shows. Where I didn't think you were star-bright was when you had to compete with the noise in the arena just before the game and during the game. That's not your thing; you don't have the timbre in your voice necessary to cut through the noise. I like your sense of humor, poise, and wit. I hope they find the proper environment to display those qualities. Once they do, you'll win 'em all over.

It did take some guts to respond to the negative comments.

I'll be honest: The first two or three times I saw Angela my only impression was of a soprano voice jabbering about players' hairstyles.

I haven't watched her segments since.
Snap judgments save so much time. ;)

But of course I am willing to give anyone a fair shot; even Rupe the Hoop grew on me after a while.

...no, wait. He is still my sworn enemy. Uh, bad example I guess...

Well Angela, thanks for stopping in, good luck and all that, my respect for you has gone up a notch and I'll look forward to seeing your future work.

Don't worry... even my worst form of protest only consists of using the courtside reports for bathroom breaks or snack preparation. :D

Alacron - You haven't watched her segments recently because she hasn't been on.

Hi, Kings fan... this is Angela Tsai, and I just wanted to write a response to those who've written about me on this site, and put a human touch to the face you see on television. This face happens to read what you post.

First off, I may not agree with what you say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it. BUT I'm a big believer that integrity behind words -- whether they be in a blog comment or a face-to-face conversation -- is paramount.

I ordinarily wouldn't respond to such comments on a blog like this, but I do believe that as a fellow Kings fan, I have a right to defend myself here in a sincere and intelligent way.

I've been in Sacramento for a little over a month now and absolutely love my job. No bull, coming from a tried-and-true New Yorker. Now, when I first got here I didn't have any live game experience, and I'll be the first to admit that I've definitely had to adjust to that. Since I started, I've received constructive criticisms from my directors and fans alike, and have been working hard on the technical game aspects of the broadcast. I may not be as extreme of a basketball expert like my esteemed colleagues -- a former NBA coach (Jerry Reynolds) or a broadcaster in this market for 20 years (Grant Napear) -- but I've got definite opinions on the game, I'm learning every minute and I bring a breadth of hosting experience talking to NBA players and personalities to the table. And like many of you, I am a FAN.

And yes, I am a new face -- and female to boot -- in a sports world dominated by men, and that's sure to provoke turmoil (as seen on these boards). I'm realistic -- I'd be remiss if I didn't expect a certain amount of hostility or chauvinistic comments about my appearance etc. So I'm not concerned about that. But here's the thing: in the brief time I've been here, Sac fans have proven to me how adaptable and supportive they are in times of good AND bad. I know change is scary, guys, but would you still love your Kings if they weren't dynamic, if there weren't stories constantly fueling your message boards, if there wasn't drama?

I absolutely value the power of the internet as a basis for community-building, which is why sites like these have the power to do a lot of good. I may be new to Sac and represent change, but I'm a fan of the Kings and want to hear what you have to say about the team. I'd love to hear from someone who's got a passion for sports, for broadcasting, and most importantly, for finding the important and compelling stories of those around us.

Let's get into the meat of why we post on sites like this. Let's argue about why a running team like the Suns can have a stellar regular season but will never be able to win a championship. Or how Reggie Theus ultimately may have big shoes to fill, but he is carving his own path as a rookie coach. I am absolutely open and thrilled to talk to fans who want to know what my journey's been like, and I'd love to learn the same. We've all got something to say.

I've seen games all around the league in almost every NBA city, and what's blown me away is the loyalty, passion and knowledge that Kings fans bring to Arco each and every game. And that's evident on sites like these -- despite the criticisms, if you didn't care, you wouldn't post. It's as simple as that. I genuinely trust that this season will just get better and better as Theus & Co. continue to develop an identity. Again, no BS: I'm really proud to be a part of this Kings fan community, and hostile words aside, I know you are too.

Balls.....that's all I have to say. Round, gi-normous, brass balls. I like it. *applauds*

Welcome on-board, Angela. For all the critics, just remember how you handled any new assignment. Angela's showing some real character and not hiding anonymously, like some people.

I did a google search and found her same post on another forum. OMG, I can't believe the hostility there! That's why I choose to hang around here, because we don't descend to that level of sniping and name-calling.

Remember, everyone. It doesn't take much to blame/name/defame someone publicly while remaining behind the invisibility of cyberspace. I'm glad that's rare here.

Just waiting for more behind the scene insights from Ms. Tsai. :)

Its great that she posted on this board, but if she is only here to try and save face rather than discuss basketball, then bah. It took some guts to come and post here, because just as you are getting praised, you could get flamed a lot worse. This board is usually really good about that though. I, for one, really can't stand to watch your segments and haven't noticed that you haven't been on for a while. I understand its a hard job, and I couldn't do any better, but the thing is, if I were to do the courtside reporting, I would sound a lot like you do. So coming from a fan of the Kings and not of courtside reporting, I really hope you find your niche, but elsewhere on TV. I think it takes away from the focus on the game when segments play about Kevin Martins haircuts, or Ron Rons toe socks.

Also, what board was extremely rude? I can't find it.

We aren't going to link to the board that actually caused all this. It's not worth giving them more traffic.

As a fellow member of the journalistic world, I can relate to what Angela's dealing with, even though I'm a guy. Women are automatically stereotyped in this business, especially when they're trying to cover men's sports. There are plenty of women that know what they're talking about if you can "look" beyond their "looks" (Erin Andrews, Pam Oliver, Kayte Christensen, Stacey Dales, etc.)

Subject matter is another topic. Would we have been so critical of Angela if our first impression of her was an in-depth discussion of breaking down a zone defense or Kevin Martin's ability to draw fouls with his drives to the basket?

Nice first post, Angela. Very classy. Best of luck to you and continued success in your career!

Oh, let's not get carried away with the gender card, okay? Thanks...

I have yet to see her actually discuss anything of substance related to basketball so I cannot judge how critical I would be. I do know that Kayte Christensen is a real improvement to the MSE broadcasting group. She actually KNOWS what she's talking about and brings a knowledge of the game of basketball to the table that's interesting and informative.

It's not about gender, Fresno King. I will protest most vehemently about that. If Tsai wants to earn our respect for her basketball knowledge, first she has to show she has some. I don't care about her age, gender, politicial affiliation or anything else. I just want the Kings "courtside reporter" to be more than eye candy who does feature pieces on Brad's dreadlocks.

From Angela Tsai: Thanks to all you supporters!

You don't know how wonderful it is to read such supportive comments on this board. When I got here, I expected Kings fans to be honest, impassioned and loyal -- and that's what I'm seeing in your posts and responses. Know this: the Kings players and coaches are SO APPRECIATIVE of the fans -- and I tell you all this from hearing it PERSONALLY!!

I will try to post as much as I can to KingsFans.com. I am also going to be starting my own blog (as part of my job) which should be fun. You'll get to see behind-the-scenes photos and read fun players stories and anecdotes. I'll let you know when that launches.

Thanks again for your kind thoughts, keep up the support for the Kings, and let's kick *$$ this season!

Well, Angela, I'm pleased that the members of the Kings' community have been so supportive of you to the point which you feel free to post in this forum (and, presumably, others). I'm looking forward to reading your blog.

One question: when will you start to report on TV again? You ought to have tv-time, just like the players ought to have playing-time on court. Like the players, the more time you get, the better you get.

Regarding your quote: You Go Girl!

Oh, a final question: How long is the famous New York Minute?

As part of your job? What job is that, exactly? Are you doing some "off camera" work because, honestly? It's a bit odd to come here and post as if you're still on TV and not tell us why you're no longer on TV. Maybe you could clarify that for us?

Props to Angela. The half-time report on the Kings at RPM was a lot of fun. I think that's her niche. Cover the things the Kings do in the community. I know I'd like to see more of that kind of stuff. We don't need a "courtside reporter" but having her do the "out and about" stuff with the Kings would really fill a void we Kings fans have had in our team coverage.

Nice job, Angela!

Agreed. I was glad she posted here to start this discussion and it seems that bits like this play more strongly to her strengths.

Yup, I...

...agree there, 21. Angela sure looked relaxed and confident in that segment and her self-deprecating "Asian driver" joke, LOL--nice touch, girl.

A very nice job at halftime last night. Focusing in on the Kings' personalities and community involvement may be the golden ticket here.

By the way, I have to admit it. I registered on the "board that shall not be named" just to watch the thread(s) continue. OMG! I am so glad I'm here instead. The putdowns and attitudes towards Ms. Tsai (and to some respected members of this forum) are stomachchurning.

The grass is NOT always greener...

p.s. My family spent a couple of weeks in China this summer. You know those stories about Asian drivers? I have to admit, from what we saw, it's genetic...

It's now 17-18 days after this thread started and cleared the air. But there is one GIANT question remaining: "Where is Angelia Tsai"?

Have not seen her on-air for the recent road trip but did see Koz and Katie several times. Don't remember seeing her during the last 3-4 home games either. But I don't watch 100% and tend to go off during commercial breaks.

Anyone have info as to Angela's status?

Anyone have info as to Angela's status?

She sits court side, normally close or right behind the Kings TV/Radio broadcast crews on road and home games. NO idea what she does. Maybe she has a 1 yr contract and now that she's been sent to the bench they're just hoping she can observe and learn something.

Are you bringing this up only because Angela Tsai is asian?

Angela did a recent half time feature piece with a bunch of the Kings riding go karts. I thought it was very good seeing the Kings out of their element but trash talking just the same. :)

If you will read post #53 in this thread, you will see a reference to an "Asian driver" joke that Angela told in her segment. BTW - GeorgeofSacramento is also Asian, as is his entire family.
