Free Agents Who Can Help the Kings

now that the kings have released courtney alexander, they will be on the market for a relatively cheap alternative off of the bench... we know that adelman does not use rookies or young, non-established players off of the bench... so i suspect that petrie will shop for a veteran player who has been productive in the NBA (i.e. Anthony Peeler, Jim Jackson types)... the key for ademan to use them is that they need to have played in the nba and have had some success... and a veteran willing to sign for the veterans minimum... here is a list of potential veteran free agent that fit the profile of productive nba player, the kings may try to sign...

John Wallace (can play the 3 or 4 spots)
Eddie Robinson (if not injured)
Gary Trent (big man will give boards and pts.)
Kendall Gill (past prime, but in Peller mode)
Corey Benjamin (still young and unestablished)
Michael Curry (past prime, but in peller mode)
Donnell Harvey (athletic)
Oliver Miller (past prime, gives size and defense)
Troy Bell (young and unestablished)
Walt Williams (past prime, in peller mode)
Corie Blount (defense and boards)
Anthony Mason (added toughness and rebounds, a headcase)
Britton Johnson (young player)
Glen Rice (way past his prime)

But if the kings are going to sign anyone to help, they better hurry before the shorthanded pacers start snapping up the better free agents still out there...

I actually don't think the Pacers have any roster room. They have a ton of injuries to complement the recent suspensions.

If a scrapy rebounder who can pass is NOT avalilabe in Europe, the Mason might be worh a look. Not a great passer but tough defensive presence and good rebounder. The Kings don't realy need any gaurds but a 2-3 swing who is tough might work.

Mason is a pretty good passer but he's pretty much way past his prime. I don't even know if he wants to play anymore.

Oh yeah about Eddie Robinson - the Knicks bought out Shandon Anderson for $20M to make room for Eddie Robinson... Who then failed his physical.

I don't think he's a legit option.

Damn Mamadou N'Diaye has been taken
LOL I was pushing for N'Diaye this summer before Tag got signed. The coment about Mason being too old is probalby true... bottom line is that this list just does not have any names on it that jump out at me. Oh well I am sure that Petrie had SOMETHING in mindwhen he waived Courtney.

Mason is a n excellent passer for a thug, problem is that has a very particular style of game which demands a slow down game wih the ball in his hands. And he wasn't athletic even when he was young. Not ot mention of course that he's always been grumpy as all hell -- probably helped end his career early just because nobody could put up with such a jerk as a limited minutes role player.

You are probalby right but just to play Devil's Advocate on this one: Mason would not be thefirst problem child to find a temporary home in Sac, andeither rehab his immage ( see J. Jackson) or at least contribute something before being sent to Adelmans dog house (see T. Massenberg) In none of these cases has the team been devistated by the negitive infulence and many of these guys turned their game arround in Sac helping the team while rehabing the resume. Not sure if Mason is too old for it to matter still or not, but if being a but head or a grump were criteria for no invite wewould never have seen J Will, C Web, JJ, T Mas, or Peeler.

Massenberg would have been the closest one of all of those personality wise. But Mass is Mason-lite. And quite frankly, givne Songaila and the way things fell apart at the end of last year, I think we would have been better off without Tony Massenberg last year.

Now in his prime Anthony Mason was oh >>>>>>>>>> Tony Massenberg. But he's not in his prime anymore. And his numebrs in his last year were really pretty anemic. His passing skills would make hima good fit for the Kings style, but he really is a half-court player all the way, and even there has considerable problems being short and with no lift. furthermore, in order to pass or be his most effective, he needs to have the ball in his hands (excellent dribbler) for long periods of time. That agonizing dibble and driblle and back your guy down and dribble game he's got. I was actually a big fan of his in his NY days -- tough, mean S.O.B.. But a real S.O.B. As much as I liked him as apart of the Knicks thug frontline, no way would I want to put up with him unless he were still a shutdown player, rugged boarder, true 6th man type etc. Having him on the end of the bench would jsut be pointless -- lot of grumbling and chemistry issues with no pay off on court.

Sorry "kingsofnba" but anyone who puts Oliver "I never met a bag of cheesburgers at 11pm I couldn't eat" Miller on a list of players who could help anyone much less the Kings doesn't really know NBA players. Your credibility just took a giant hit.

The rest of your list is unfortunately a sad lot. If we got rid of Courtney Alexander, a real shooter and quite athletic, then it will take someone better than he to even be considered.

I'm suprised Coach hasn't used Daniels yet. Maybe some more minutes for OTag will see him begin to fill that void. He needs at least 20 minutes I think to be helpful. They had him replacing CWebb last night, not a bad idea against teams with bigger 4's and 5's. Tomorrow vs. Yao I think we'll see OTag a bit more.. (well I can hope can't I?)

you have to remember, that adelman plays veterans in his rotations... very rarely do you see him insert a rookie or unproven player into a game (i.e. kevin martin, erik daniels, gerald wallace)... but you will see him use veteran journeymen (i.e. anthony peller, jon barry, jim jackson)... true, most of the free agents still available are fringe players, but what do you expect to be left over at this point of the season... but i do think a couple of the free agents can get into the kings rotaion if given the opportunity to play... namely, Gary Trent, John Wallace, Corrie Blount or Eddie Robinson (if healthy)

What are the odds they will even sign anyone else? If they didn't before now why would they. I hope they do because I would like to see someone with experience as an option out there.

from the link above:

League rules enable the Pacers to move Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson and O'Neal to the suspended list, because they have been assessed long-term suspensions, and create three roster openings. Indiana can then use its remaining salary-cap exceptions ($2.7 million and $1.6 million) to sign replacements or add minimum-salaried players.

It's an article that talks about the Pacers chances with Malone (zero), mentions Courtney Alexander and Gary Trent as possible fill-ins for the Pacers.

I remember when people were saying "Don't worry, Petrie will make a move and get one of the free agents!" and here we are, six deep with nobody left worth signing.

Looking at some free agent lists, if we want athletic live bodies there is Dion Glover and Trepagnier available still I think. I remember Glover being a pretty good rebounder/defender unless I am thinking of someone else.

I remember the start of the season, when fans on this board were excited about the prospect of youngsters like Martin and Minard giving the Kings some energy. Martin showed some promise in his preseason starts, but the regular-season games generally have been so tight that there's been no opportunity to experiment and Adelman has tightened his rotation in an effort to win. So, at least to this point, the roster spots given to the young players -- Martin, Evans and Daniels -- essentially are wasted.

Even Ostertag, who has skills that the Kings can use (really!), has seen limited action because he's not in shape after missing camp. Of course, the only way for him to get in shape at this point is to play.

And that's going to be the problem with any free agents that are brought in. Would Gary Trent or Dion Glover help in the long run? Possibly. Would Adelman be more willing to use them than he would to use a young player? Probably. Would the Kings suffer in the short term while the new additions slowly played themselves into shape and got familiar with the system? No doubt.

I hope I'm wrong, but the Kings' lack of depth could come back to bite them in the butt. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the issue wasn't adequately addressed in the offseason. Making changes on the fly will be challenging, and in a season where the title is up for grabs, it's a shame the Kings didn't address the bench issue sooner.

I WOULD suggest Trent, but he is injury prone the last few years. Oh, anyone else know what happened to that Oberto guy from Argentina coming over here? Wasnt it a few months ago we thought Petrie had this guy sowed up? Big guy, 6'10/275...and can shoot.

Methinks the Kings need to go out and find some scrappy, dirty defender even if he is unskilled simply for the fact that Peja would have to play against him every day in practice and be forced to develop his game accordingly.
