FoxSports: Lakers are front runners to land Kidd

The New Jersey Nets are working to find a way to trade point guard before Thursday's trade deadline, and the Los Angeles Lakers are the front-runners to acquire him, according to a report in The New York Times.

The newspaper cited "several" unnamed Eastern Conference officials, who apparently feel that Nets' president Rod Thorn will make a big move before the deadline arrives at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday. Thorn, however, has told other sports news outlets that there is a "five percent chance" that the team will make a trade.

The Times has reported that the Lakers are the best bet to acquire Kidd, but that L.A.'s offer of young players, expiring contracts and a draft pick probably is not enough to complete a deal that would effectively put Kidd and Kobe Bryant in the same uniform. But three Eastern Conference officials, who spoke with The Times on the condition of anonymity, reportedly said that New Jersey is attempting to involve a third team in a potential trade.

If they get Kidd, I think the Lakers will be one of the scariest teams come playoff time. What do you guys think?

Don't know why the Lakers even want Kidd when he's not a triangle player. He has had problems at every stop with coaches and their systems. Didn't like Jim Cleamons (a current Lakers assistant coach) running things through Jim Jackson during their Dallas days, didn't like Skiles stuff, and didn't like Byron Scott. This would be like Payton revisited. He likes the ball in his hands, and will want to push, especially since he grabs rebounds himself. The only way it’ll work is if they run the break more, and forgo a lot of the triangle. They don't have the dominant post guy to look out for and their guys are versatile enough to run with Kidd.

I think the lack of a dominant big-man or two will make the Lakers unable to win the Finals regardless of which guards they have or do not have... jump shots do not win championships.

Generally true, but remember who the coach is there -- he won it with Scottie and Michael. Always had that one excellent big to go along wiht it, but Ho Grant and Rodman weren't big post scorers just great defenders who would take care of the dirty work.

In any case I am not worried about this making them champions. And Kidd does look like a curios fit for that tema/system -- basically Kidd, Kobe, Lamar AND walton would all be guys who play best with the ball in their hands. In an uptempo running system could be a devastating creative/passing team. But in the triangle you generally want your non-main guys to be able to knock down open jumpers and stay out of the way. Mayeb they are jsut trying to get Jason to play the aging big PG/defender Ron Harper role. But if that's the case tehy better be getting him for the cheap and random garbage that's been mentioned.
