Fox 40 said a straw vote showed NBA owners are split on Kings relocation

Fingers crossed but we have been told so many fibs by Fox 40 in recent weeks that its just too freaking hard to take seriously any of their "breaking news" on this matter.

I didn't see the report: did they mention who held this straw vote? If it's Fox 40 who did it, it's a little iffy, as someone said up there. Otherwise, it's a little promising.

I wasn't actually watching. I just had the TV on in the background and heard it. It sounded like Crandall but I'm not positive. It was just a few minutes after the 10:00 news started. Anyone watching then should have heard it.

Who wants to make a bet that if the Maloofs can't move the team or if it falls through somehow that they sell the Kings within a year?

This I agree with! I wish they decided to sell it earlier though!

Whether they stay or go, within a couple of years I don't see them owning the team.

I don't see how they can keep the team if they insist on riding the Palms all the way down, but that same stubborness makes me wonder... can the NBA declare an owner unfit?

What I read is that the Maloofs may lose majority ownership to Caesars Entertainment but will stay and run the casino. I don't exactly know how that will work (the running of the casino). I also heard that Caesars would want to 'downscale' the image of the Palms to attract more of the working class. The Maloofs did an excellent job with the Palms' current image/theme and its still one of the locals' favorite casino to go to. They just might bail. Who knows?

With the new CBA there's also the issue of contraction. Some think NBA talent pool is too dilluted with current number of franchises and less is better. There are some that think it would be better (at least for established players) to have say about 350 players under NBA contract instead of the current around 400. The NBA still has to do something with its New Orleans franchise which it now owns as the Board of Governors debate what will be ultimate fate of the Sacramento franchise and all small market teams going forward. These league meetings in NYC are certainly full of intrigue and critical for future of the NBA.

Shinn. Actually, no. Sterling should be removed as he is consciously fielding an uncompetitive team. That's more of an affront to the game than making an ugly face after fouling. Only one pro sport has the Federal government, passed and signed right to act as a monopoly. That is MLB. It doesn't have to work by the rules of most other businesses. If Congress passed a similar law to cover the NBA, the league would be run differently. I don't know how specifically.

I was told that really the league has little power to tell owners what to do and where to do it because this is a country where businessmen can move their businesses if the wish. Only in baseball is it different.

Did I get that right 'cause I'm doing a bit of guessing here?

I used to stay at the Palms all the time. My wife loves their beds and sheets. But boy was it expensive for an off strip property. The Maloofs did a wonderful job cross branding between the NBA and the reality show culture of the 00s. Unfortunately that market is the market that has completely bailed on Vegas.

There is a locals only market, the Maloofs know it well from Fiesta and Stations. But they wanted their own little pearl in the desert - the problem being that there is a friggin Oyster bed down there and so now there place is too high end for the locals but too low end for what's left of the rich foreign market.

Like them or not, the Maloofs did a great job in marketing the Palms. For anyone that has visited most of the top Vegas casinos, Palms' decor and everything in general is just mediocre. But they've been able to charge prices close the the high end because they've marketed their brand to be an exclusive location where the hip crowd stays. They got a lot of celebs to show up and say they love the Palms so many people flocked there because they thought if Paris, Britney, Lil Wayne etc likes it, then it must be great. They did a good job with maximizing their mediocre off strip casino, but the entire Vegas downturn killed everyone that doesn't have diversity in Macau or super deep pockets.

The thing that floors me is how they can be so savvy at marketing the Palms and yet so terrible at PR when it came to the Kings. Unless they really were just waiting out the perfect time to leave, they really didn't do anything since re-signing Webber to endear themselves to the fans and they made a few huge missteps along the way.

The problem with that scenario is that they could sell it to Samueli, and then you're in the same boat. I guess his purchase might have the same roadblocks as the Maloofs are trying to hurdle right now, since he would be promptly moving the team. But whoever would buy it, you'd have the same issue of them not necessarily being loyal to Sacramento and looking to move the team.

That's why I've always felt that the key to keeping the team in Sacramento is building a new arena. And I still wonder exactly where Taylor/ICON is right now.

They're going to sell imo. It's just a question of when, and to whom. If they move to Anaheim I bet the Anaheim arena owner eventually buys them out. Heck, for all we know there could be an under the table agreement already in place for just that.

This is interesting to me. I can't imagine that it's in the NBA's interest to have weak sisters as the owners of any team. And the Maloofs are certainly that. So, it might be in the NBA's interest to give a strong nudge to the Maloofs to sell earlier rather than later. (Maybe the sell early part wishful thinking on my part).

That would explain a lot about their flat out refusal to cooperate with Johnson and Taylor.

The reality crowd though left in about 2004... Stayed there for a week in 2008 and it was a ghost town. Like a serious Luxor ghost town. If you don't know what I mean then go to the Luxor and walk around. I go to Vegas all the time, and the Palms isn't even on my list of casinos I visit anymore because it's dead there. Even their nightclub which used to be "exclusive" isn't so exclusive anymore. It felt like they hired extras to make it seem like a place to be. Seriously felt like I was on a TV show because the "extras" weren't even interacting with anyone, and the rest of the peopel were just standing around too.

Yah I was thinking the same thing.. Said it in another thread but if they go to Anaheim then Samueli (or however you spell his name) will own the team within a few years.
