Sacramento Kings On SI

Guest

As we sit and wait through the quiet days of August, and there's little to nothing new to write about regarding the Sacramento Kings, let's take a step back and ask a simple question heading into next season. Can the Kings be fun next season? It seems like a simple question, but after last year's turmoil, the Kings are in desperate need of a change in the overall vibe of Sacramento. During the Beam Team year in which the Kings broke their playoff drought, the entire city was buzzing.

I think the article misses a key point. Is the entertainment worth the price of admission.

Can we not be both fun AND good?

Yeah I remember we were all pretty hopeful about his and Giles future at the time. I'm not sure if the on court product was particularly exciting to me but the idea of these guys turning into potential all stars was. That sure went away in a hurry.
They were fast and athletic and The Scores lead by Shump worked hard. Giles didn't really factor into it so much as the thought we'd maybe have this run and gun team, then we brought Giles in, Bagley seemed to basically get benched instead of become the full time center, amidst all the infighting between Brandon Williams and Dave Joerger and their dueling leaks. Right up until the final 15-20 games when it seems like everyone gave up.
Tyreke's rookie season was super fun to watch.
Yeah, this one was even more fun I think. Chasing 20-5-5, damn it sure seemed like we had a future star in the making and then to land Cousins the following offseason only to have the whole thing Maloof'd. 😢

Tyreke would like to have a word or two (or three, or more) with you.

There were fun moments during that season. The huge comeback vs. the Bulls, Tyreke's game winner and his ROY performance, but that team won 25 games and most people stop caring once it's obvious that the season is lost. The season itself was not enjoyable, there were just some moments that were fun.

IMO, bad teams are fun to watch when they have the potential to eventually be good. OKC in KD's rookie season for example. Or the Rockets two seasons ago. The Spurs since they drafted Wemby.

When the wins and losses don't matter as much as seeing young talent develop game by game. In that regard, I'm not sure next season's Kings team will be fun to watch. And I'd definitely be surprised if they are any good either.

To be fair, that came after quite possibly the most joylessly miserable season of basketball I’ve ever seen (The Spencer Hawes/Mikki Moore/Jason Thompson frontcourt rotation was somehow the least terrible thing about that team) so anything seemed super fun in comparison.
Ah yes, the days that we tried to talk ourselves into "Shock and Hawes"! May they never return.

Small nitpick, but in KD's rookie season that team was still called the Seattle SuperSonics and they didn't play in OKC. I don't mean to be pedantic, I just really hate the way that owner lied about his intentions to move the team so I don't want the history to be forgotten.

Yeah, that was me being lazy with my wording. That was actually Presti's first draft as GM. He took Durant 2nd and Jeff Green fifth. Green wasn't a home run pick, but man that guy played a lot of NBA games.

Maybe the worst part of the relocation to OKC was that the team was about to be very good and Seattle fans were robbed of that.

I think frustration will mount without other moves and season full of iso ball. And if the defense is horrible again. Was, rinse, repeat.

With a new coach and coaching staff, it's really hard to say. It's certainly possible that the Kings win some unexpected games, and have fun doing it, just as they did last season. Clobbering the Celtics in Boston, for instance.
