for those who are caught up in what DeMarcus said to Grant after the game

ya he should not be bashing DeMarcus like he does. we all know the guy has some issues, why fuel the fire?

because that's the point, to fuel the fire. apart from the more recent bout of utterly exhausting IT-worship, grant napear is a halfway decent game-caller. but fans will tune in to watch a game regardless of the color commentary. a radio show, on the other hand, requires that the host alone is able to carry an audience. of course, it's difficult to retain that audience on a sports talk show in a one-team town when the generic fan doesn't care very much anymore to begin with. so what do you do when the kings are seven years removed from their last playoff appearance? you create controversy. an audience will always tune in for controversy. DMC is then an incredibly easy target. he creates his own controversy, and grant is just a shamelessly misguided opportunist who fans those flames because he knows that's how you keep people calling in. it's howard stern 101. grant just happens to be horrible at the shock jock schtick, but again, the people keep calling in...

so what did Grant say on his show?

I didn't catch all of it. But some of things I did catch:

  • Cousins is a professional only in the sense that he gets paid for being a professional basketball player; other than that he's not professional in any sense of the word
  • Most of Cousins' teamates would like to see him traded and off the team
  • Reiterated that Cousins' issues don't have to do with maturity in the strict sense of the word; his issues have to do with more severe psychological issues
  • Said all you have to do is look on the television screen and make your own assessment of how he deals with his own teamates, refs and the coaches; don't take his word for it.

I hope next season the new sacramento management gets us a new media crew as well. I love Jerry and hope the new arena court is dedicated to him because he is Mr. Kings after all but I think it's time to move on especially from Grant. CM DAVE would be my pick for the color commentary personally.
You guys are gonna wear me out. But that's OK, I'm up for it.

For the record: I enjoy both Napear and Reynolds very much and appreciate the great announcers and Kings fans they are. I hope they can stick around for quite a while.

I agree. It is Grant on the radio that gets old.

Eh............I don't really like Grant that much.......Jerry Reynolds is my hero, but Grant.....after all these years, I'm still trying to figure out my opinion of him. He does some things that I applaud, and does some things that I really can't stand.

If Grant was just a sports radio host I would have no problem with what he's saying. BUT he's also the TV voice for the Kings and that's where I have a BIG, BIG problem. He's using information he may have picked up while in the employ of MSE on his radio show. To me, that's unethical and smarmy. I wish he would just stop, but he won't and he hides behind the "that's what my callers want to talk about" excuse. Hey, Grant? That's a cop-out. You aren't a shrink and for you to proclaim that Demarcus has psychological issues is unfair. It almost makes one wonder if he's intentionally poking the stick in the hopes of provoking a reaction.

Knowing that he's a Maloof mouthpiece, could he be working to poison the well on his way out?
What he's doing is at best, dumb, and at worst, pathological. Why say that everyone on the team wants Cousins gone, when that possibly can't be the case. Players care more about winning than anything.

It must be really really hard and sad for you to be a Kings fan. In your world we should get rid of Cousins and Evans and let Thomas be our franchise player. Have fun with that.

Um, dude? You might want to revise your snark, at least in this instance. All Kingster was doing in the quoted post was repeating some of the things Grant Napear said on his radio show.

Because he takes a ton of calls from fans who are sick and tired of Cousin's antics. What is he supposed to do? Lie? My respect level actually went up quite a few levels for him having the courage to tell it like it is especially considering he travels with DMC and is around him a lot. Good job Grant!

What is he supposed to do? Maybe quit baiting his callers with little tidbits that may or may not be true. Grant also badmouthed Bobby Jackson and even Chris Webber. In both instances, while he was pretty much shown to be wrong, he never apologized or took back his comments.

I can't wait to see what happens the next time DMC has a killer game and TPTB want Jerry and Grant to interview him post-game.

Grant on the radio is no different than Jim Rome or any other guy who needs controversy to light up the phone lines.

You know it's just like everything in life. When you see reviews people are more apt to complain than compliment so it's not surprising he has more callers complaining. That doesn't mean it's a reflection of the true numbers.

Severe psychological issues? It's sad that such ignorant statements are being broadcasted. I almost feel bad for Grant that he sees life and people in such extremes.
Not taking his word for it is the best advice Grant Napear has ever given.

You do know that calls are screened for subject and content manner, right?

very true. i wanted to talk about peja missed free throw that determined the game years back and the guys screening the calls didn't let me get through. pretty lame, i don't call anymore bc of that crap. fans really don't get to voice their opinion.

I will bet you any reasonable sum of money that if one of us called the show and were asked by the call screener what our topic was and we said something like "I'd like to talk about why we SHOULDN'T trade DMC" we would get through to Grant. This assumes we don't have our radio on in the background, they have enough time left in the show, etc.

So how much would you like to wager and who will act as a neutral third party escrow to make sure the loser pays up (through Paypal would be fine)?

I really think it's different now because Grant knows the Magoofs are done and there isn't anything they can do at this point. Hell, they probably can care less that he's bashing DMC. They aren't going to be the owners of the team in a couple of months. I think if DMC was on the team 5 years ago it might be a different case -- something similar to your Peja call. But I think now, more than ever, he's allowing fans to express their frustrations and say what they want to say.

You realize that the Kings have offered help in having DMC see a therapist, right? I think there was even a highly respected poster on this forum who is a mental health professional who earlier in the year suggested that DMC's issues could be a serious problem with his mental health. He, of course, was bashed pretty hard by the DMC supporters here and he dropped it.

If you do what Grant suggests and watch everything DMC does -- and I mean everything. With the ball, without it, sitting on the bench, his reaction to calls and non-calls, his reaction to teammates and other players, interaction with fans (occasionally), the expressions on his face, how he walks, etc. It's seriously mind blowing. It's depressing even watching it.

Just do that once or twice and you'll see what Grant's point is. I think right now most people don't see it because they don't want to see it so they block it out.

I really, really dislike Grant. I didn't have an opinion either way until I listened to his radio show. As a color commentator, he's fine, maybe even decent. His "if you don't like that, you don't like NBA basketball" line is one of the best in the industry. However, after he accused Bobby Jackson of milking his injuries, I basically decided he was the devil. The fights with C-Webb only affirmed my dislike of him. Cousins isn't exactly a stand-up guy, but in a row against Napier, I'll always side with the player, unless there is a preponderance of evidence to suggest otherwise.

Agree, but will add. Rome has WAY more class than Napear. In fact, Napear has none. Rome has decent sense of humor, laughing, even poking fun at himself on occasion. Sour puss Napear has absolutely ZERO sense of humor, only massive jerk ego. Like a man, Rome admits when he's wrong. ARROGANT Napear is never wrong and will lie, trash anyone who calls him on it. Rome has earned RESPECT of athletes, coaches, everyone he chats with. Napear is not in same league as JR on radio but apparently in Sactown small market can get away with such ridiculous smallness. IMO, Napear wore out his welcome long time ago and needs to go - along with any and all boot licking Maloof sycophants.

Yet the irony in all this is that Rome uses Grant as one of his fill ins on his show when he's out. Thoughts on that?

I know. But I'm not sure Rome is in control of that. Just like in Sacramento, Napear is not in total control of his show, it's KHTK and his producer.

That's a real, real low bar.

Well, I'm not PurpleHaze, but I'll give you my thoughts, anyway: the fact that Jim Rome, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Tom Joyner and Howard Stern have widely popular, nationally syndicated radio shows just goes to prove that there are a whole bunch of people with bad taste. And the fact that Rome has Napear fill in for him just goes to show that Rome, himself, has bad taste, as well.

Yeah, we'll, that's your opinion. 100's of millions listen to those shows. I happen to like many of them. Care to tell what shows you listen to?

While I don't care for Grant and have high hopes for Cuz, it's obvious Cuz has some serious issues that he needs to deal with.
At the very least Cuz has to reach a level of having a bit of self awareness.

Don't really understand your comment, given that I was reporting was Grant said in response to inquiry.

That said, I love being a Kings fan. I love watching the games on many different levels. So I guess you don't know what you're talking about.

Congratulations. You win today's "Well, duh" award. Of course it's his opinion. It's got his name there and everything...

If you want to argue with Slim - or anyone else - about their radio listening habits or any other tangential topic that pops into your head, why not do the rest of us a favor and take it to PMs? Thanks.

First of all, stop being so rude all the time to me in your replies. Its really not necessary. I found it odd that he needed to tell us all the shows he doesn't care for and insulted the people who do listen to them by saying they have bad taste. Many posters in here I'm sure listen to those shows. But I'm sure you're okay with that, right?

Wait, so you are arguing that Slim can't have an opinion on some shows being in bad taste? Really?

If your skin is that thin then what are you doing posting here?
