Fanhouse: Without Big Splash, Kings Still Hope to Make Waves by Sam Amick

What I gathered:

They called LeBron to see if they had a shot

Says he would have drafted Cousins #1 overall

Cousins recently weighed in at 285 with 14.5% body fat, compared with the 290 and 16% at the draft.

Sounds excited about the ability to use cap space to acquire pieces of the future.

Gets me excited about Cousins and the future of the Kings, and the Maloofs may actualy be serrious about spending money again!

Great article IMO.

There's also this article today about Elie doing early work with some of the players who will be on his SL team. Elie says Cousins is a hard worker and getting into better shape, and good things about his attitude.

Seems like everyone who has worked with Cousins has only good things to say about him.

"And hearing what was said about him makes me sick. He's a pleasure to be around, and he wants to be good."

Pretty strong statement :)

I can't wait to watch this team play. We have a nice young core and hopefully we'll continue to grow this year (and grow together). I can't wait to see how Demarcus plays.

Anybody already buy season tickets?

Some tweets from practice

http://twitter.com/mr_jasonjones

"Elie just told Whiteside to "power that thing up" which he did for a layup. He's very explosive around the rim, gets off the floor with ease"

"Casspi handling the ball a lot and looks comfortable. Just went to the rim or a reverse dunk when no one stopped him."

"I'm at the second practice. Tyreke Evans is working out. R. Thompson and T. Rice also practicing."

"Whiteside, Cousins showing handles during 1-on-1 drill. Cummard from BYU looks good again."

I am really happy to read this line:
*Dionte Christmas showed more than once he might be the best shooter on the squad. He has three-point range, something that could earn him an invitation to training camp.
I really want Dionte to make the team as 4th string SG behind a resigned Udoka. He's the shooter you all want and at no cost. Anthony Morrow lol.

7' is insane. Is their a point at which he becomes too tall to play the SF? Thats where I like him but it would be pretty weird to have our tallest player playing the 3.

You know, several fans mentioned this season that Donte looked taller, and I think Brick even said that he'd believe 7' at this point. I don't think you can be too tall to play the SF position, as long as you have the perimeter skills and the quickness to pull it off, which Donte did last season. He actually showed some pretty nifty post moves as well, and with his height, can play some four, but this team simply doesn't need that from him anymore. His potential is off the charts. If he can ever become more consistent and polish off his rough edges...oh boy.

Donte can't rebound to save his life, so he's stuck as an SF for life. His career is probably going to be shorter than most, because once he loses his athleticism he won't be able to switch to the 4. He'll be like Brian Cook, lol.

What's with the love for Udoka??? I personally don't want him re-signed. It'll provide a temptation for PW not to play Donte and Omri

Udoka was a decent player and a good presence for the team last year and the coaches like him. Plus, I think a little roster stability is important for the young guys, considering how GP gutted the team this year. He won't see nearly as much time next year with Donte playing last year's PF minutes at SF and with Garcia healthy. And his contract will be very affordable. Let's say we bring back him and Brockman. There would still be roster space for two more players. Those are the spaces that can be used on young talent, so not much is lost. (here's hoping we sign Dionte Christmas!)

Not unless he loses his agility. Otherwise its all a gigantic positive for us. Last year Donte was able to stay with most SGs. Even if he lost a bit of that he is still going to be able to more than stay with SFs. And loom over them too. He could be our third physically overwhelming freak to play between Reke and Cousins.

As an aside people forget that KG actually played mostly SF for his first 5 or 6 years in the league. I've got absolutely no problem at all having the biggest SF in the league, particularly since he showed so much more defensive presence last year. If he keeps focused on that end he could be an incredible weapon to throw out there to neutralize the big overpowering SFs of the league. Already saw him shut down Melo last year. Bigger than Durant. Big enough to swing up to guard guys like KG and Dirk. If Whiteside were to develop you could legitimately one day throw out a 6'11"/6'11"/7'0" C/PF/SF trio where you were quicker and more atheltic than your opponents at every position. The potential is just off the charts.

Yup. Just as teams in the East build to have someone to defend Dwight, or the Lakers got Artest to defend Pierce or Lebron I think we need to be prepared to have a player to defend Durant for many years to come. Durant isn't as strong as Pierce or James, but certainly a lot longer. If Donte can become our KD stopper it would be awesome

Wow, throw in to that mix Tyreke and that's the potential line up could stop the Heat in a couple of years.

That was a good read. The team is heading in the right direction.
